NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas State's Freeze takes Ole Miss gig

12.05.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois

Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze was named head coach of Ole Miss earlier today. Freeze was ASU's offensive coordinator in 2010 and then took over for head coach Steve Roberts and led the Red Wolves to a 10-2 mark this year. It hasn't been decided if Freeze will coach ASU in the upcoming GoDaddy.com Bowl against Northern Illinois. Last year there were two examples of lower-tier coaches accepting better gigs before the postseason. In both instances, an interim coach was named. After losing in the MAC Championship, Jerry Kill left Northern Illinois two days later for Minnesota but the Huskies rolled over Fresno State, 40-17, in the Humanitarian Bowl. Miami-Ohio's Mike Haywood left for Pittsburgh following the win over NIU yet the RedHawks went on to beat Middle Tennessee in the Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Middle Tennessee State passes eye test

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I took my son to see Middle Tennessee State play Akron on Sunday – a close up encounter with a Blue Raiders squad that came in 7-1 SU, 7-0 ATS. From the opening tip, it was clear that MTSU was the better of the two teams (77-53 win). And I'm taking into account that from Akron's perspective, the situation didn’t set up for a gutsy performance – on the road, 1 pm local start, empty arena. The Zips could beat the Blue Raiders at home, but at a neutral site, MTSU is at least 5-6 points better – maybe more.

The first thing that stood out was MTSU's athleticism and length. We use terms like that all of the time to describe teams but in this case it is very real. The guards are quick and the post players run the floor well and make it difficult for opposing teams to get easy looks in the paint. The difference between mid-major and power conference teams often comes down to smarts. MTSU isn't that far removed personnel wise than a majority of the SEC, yet they are very well coached and play team basketball. Five players scored between nine and 19 points. On missed shots, they got out and ran, while on makes, they were patient on offense and didn't settle Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Penn State none too pleased about Ticket City berth

12.05.2011     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State vs. Houston

Penn State apparently isn't too happy with its invitation to the Ticket City Bowl to face Houston (see: player's only meeting Sunday). A few Nittany Lions took to Twitter to voice their frustration. PSU finished 9-3 which was good for the second-best record (tied) in the Big Ten yet they were passed over by Iowa, Ohio State and Northwestern.

Freshman cornerback Adrian Amos: "Oh, I guess we didn't go 9-3."

Junior wide receiver Justin Brown: "Might as well play against concord high PSU vs. CHS."

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 13 NFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC News and Notes from Week 13.

Atlanta
Matt Ryan is throwing picks this year, something that didn't happen very often in the Falcons 13-3 season last year. Ryan opened up this game with a three-and-out, then interceptions on his next two drives. He only threw nine INT's all season in 2010 but he’s already thrown a dozen this year, with a full quarter of the season remaining.

This passing game simply isn't potent right now. Roddy White has been battling injuries all year, lacking the explosive burst that was such a big part of his game in previous seasons. Julio Jones, too, has been unable to stay healthy. Harry Douglas has only three touchdown catches in three years with the team, never living up to expectations. Tony Gonzalez doesn't seem to have much left in the tank at this late stage of his career. We saw drops, Read more

College Basketball Free Play: Illinois-Chicago Flames at UW-Milwaukee Panthers

Illinois-Chicago +15.5 at UW-Milwaukee O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Illinois-Chicago

Now that conference play has started for a few leagues, I'm always looking for inflated prices that are based on preseason results. Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a prime example. The Panthers are 6-1 with a lone loss to Michigan State. They also beat Loyola by 17 to open Horizon play. So what happens? They are being asked to lay -15.5 today against UIC. Last season, at no point was UWM a double-digit favorite in Horizon play, let alone -15.5. Their highest price tag was -9 vs. UIC – a game UWM won 87-75. And while they closed -10.5 vs. Loyola (and covered) on Thursday, the adjustment is far too much as Loyola doesn’t look much different than UIC at this point. Howard Moore is in his second year as head coach at UIC and it isn’t a stretch to assume some sort of improvement (see: win over Evansville, three-point loss at UW-Green Bay). But beyond it all, here is the key stat to consider: UIC went 2-17 against Horizon League foes last year. Of those 17 losses, exactly two came by more than 14 points. I’ve seen enough Horizon action over the last few Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: Texas Longhorns at Baylor Bears

Texas at Baylor -2.5 O/U 63.5

The Baylor Bears (8-3, 5-3 Big Xll) host the Texas Longhorns (7-4, 4-4) in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday. Texas enters off an upset win at Texas A&M on Thanksgiving, booting a last-second field goal to win 27-25 and kicking their rival A&M out of the Big Xll as the Aggies move to the SEC next season. A closer look at the box score shows Texas gained just 237 yards offense at 3.6 yards per play and benefitted from four A&M turnovers. Meanwhile, Baylor put a beating on Texas Tech last week 66-42 and the Bears have won four straight games and are now 6-0 SU/ATS at home. With over 600 yards offense including 79 running plays for 360 rushing yards last week, the Bears should be ready to run again this week versus the Longhorns.

NFL Handicapping: New England gets by with makeshift secondary

12.02.2011     06:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indianapolis at New England -20.5 O/U 47.5

Article on New England's depleted secondary which has been used and abused for much of the season. And while some of the damage (307 ypg passing allowed) came with the game out of reach or against teams trying to play catch-up, there has also been a good chunk that took place with the game on the line. The good news is the unit has five games in which to improve – or five games to fool bettors into thinking they can all of a sudden sort of stop the pass. The next four games will feature opposing quarterbacks Dan Orlovsky, Rex Grossman/John Beck, Matt Moore, and Tim Tebow.

The reshaping of the secondary began in preseason when the Patriots released veterans Brandon Meriweather, James Sanders, Darius Butler, Brandon McGowan and Jonathan Wilhite. Second-round draft Read more

College Basketball Betting Notes: Oklahoma second leading scorer transfers

Sacramento State at Oklahoma -20 O/U 137

Oklahoma's second leading scorer, Calvin Newell, has decided to transfer because of family issues. Newell averaged 13.0 ppg despite playing only 20 minutes per game.

“We'll definitely miss Calvin,” Kruger said. “He's been a key contributor this season, a guy who's scored the basketball for us. However, I respect his decision and the issues he's facing, and certainly wish him the best.”

College Basketball Handicapping: Harvard could be Ivy League's best ever

12.01.2011     07:40 AM         Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Harvard (6-0) upset Florida State 46-41 in last week’s Battle for Atlantis tournament, and emerged as the tournament champion. The Crimson are poised for a big season and are on the doorstep of cracking the top-25. Harvard’s defense is delivering dominating results thus far. In five games vs. DI opponents, Harvard is holding teams to 0.85 points per possession. Opposing offenses are making just 42 percent of their two-point shots with interior strength led by senior forward Keith Wright; last year’s Ivy League Player of the Year. Wright and Kyle Casey lead the team in scoring, rebounding and are both hitting over 59% of their shots inside the arc.

No Ivy League team has ever rated out higher than No. 52 in the country in Ken Pom’s college basketball ratings, and that includes the exceptional Cornell team from 2010 that made the Sweet Sixteen. Prior to those ratings, the Penn teams from the mid-90’s were some of the best ever in the Ivy League, but Harvard has the look of a team ready to win at least 25 games and win the Ivy League title with so many other conference teams suffering key injuries already this season.
