College Football Handicapping: Where the money is headed Week 7

10.10.2011     12:16 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of movement on the college football board today as we take a look at what the betting markets are up to.

Florida State at Duke
CRIS Opener: Florida State -9.5
CRIS Current: Florida State -13
I remember hearing about how Florida State's defense was supposed to be Alabama-like this season. Then why did they allow 35 points in back-to-back weeks? I gave them somewhat of a pass at Clemson because let's face it, the Tigers are this year's version of Auburn. But allowing 391 yards at 6.5 ypp to Wake Forest? The same Wake Forest squad you shutout and held to 185 yards last season? FSU's five turnovers obviously helped Wake's cause, but this doesn't look like the type of team that can just flip a switch and win by margin on the road off a bad performance. The Seminoles have faced a great team (Oklahoma), good team (Clemson), average team (Wake Forest), and two bottom feeders (UL-Monroe and Charleston Southern). They are 2-3 SU/ATS. I'll let Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Vols replace injured Bray with former starter Simms

10.10.2011     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LSU -15 at Tennessee

Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken thumb suffered in last week's loss to Georgia. Bray’s replacement, Matt Simms, started early last season before being pulled in favor of Bray. The injury to Bray marks the second blow to the offense after big play wide receiver Justin Hunter (knee) was lost for the season.

Even with a decent amount of experience, Simms is simply not in Bray's class in terms of passing ability. Prior to the injury, Bray had a 14-to-2 TD-to-INT ratio and was 11th in the country in quarterback rating. To make matters worse, the real season is about to start for the Vols with games against LSU, Alabama, South Carolina and Arkansas four of the next five weeks. Expect opposing teams to key on Simms, especially with UT unable to effectively run the Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Things continue to go downhill for Maryland

10.10.2011     08:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Clemson -9 at Maryland

As if Maryland needed anymore drama. For the second straight week, quarterback Danny O'Brien was pulled due to a lack of effectiveness. O'Brien entered the season as one of the ACC's top signal callers after throwing for 2,438 yards, 22 TDs and 8 INTs as a freshman. Through five games, the sophomore has already thrown six picks and doesn't appear even remotely comfortable with what head coach Randy Edsall and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton are running. O'Brien was replaced by sophomore CJ Brown who didn't fare much better; he failed to complete a pass on his first 10 attempts.

The only positive for the Terps is that technically, they didn't quit. Down 21-3 heading into the fourth quarter, they sprung for two touchdowns and had the ball with a chance to take the lead. They also rushed for 246 yards but couldn't overcome a 5-for-23, 53 Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Marshall's schedule softens defensively

10.10.2011     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rice at Marshall -4.5

Good article on how Marshall's schedule is about to take a complete 180-degree turn. Through the first six games of the season, the Thundering Herd (5-1 ATS) never played a team not currently ranked 39th or better in total defense. With the meat of the C-USA slate upcoming, that is about to change in a big way. The best stop unit Marshall will face based on the current numbers is Houston (71st) who by no means should be considered even mediocre.

While Marshall's offense (271.7 ypg, 115th) is not as explosive as a majority of the league, expect an increase in production upcoming. Also note that the Herd's own defense is much better than a most of its upcoming foes.

College Football Betting Trends: Virginia faces Georgia Tech off of bye week

10.10.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Georgia Tech -8 at Virginia

Note that Virginia will mark the first opponent for Georgia Tech that comes in off a true bye week. Under Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets are 24-6 SU against teams on regular rest and 6-8 SU vs. FBS foes who had more than a week to prepare. NC State played the previous Thursday, allowing two extra days of prep time – which didn't matter as injury-riddled Wolfpack defense was torched.

After starting the season 4-0 ATS, Tech’s value may have peaked with ATS losses each of the last two weeks. GT won last season's meeting over the Cavaliers, 33-21, as 10-point favorites. They produced a season-high 477 yards rushing in that contest.

Second half kick-off list

That will wrap up today's action. Thanks for following. Good luck with tonight's games.

(3:45 PT) Remember how Virginia Tech's "easy" schedule was going to lead to a 11-1 or 12-0 record. Hokies down 35-31 to Miami with 2 and change left. When was the last time VT lost two straight home games?

(3:36 PT) Rob Veno recommends Idaho Over 24.5 2nd half.

(3:15 PT) NFL line move alert: Bengals getting hammered, now favored -1 at Jacksonville.

(2:55 PT) Arizona scores two TDs in 8 seconds to cut lead to 30-20 at Oregon State.

(2:50 PT) As just as we say that, McGloin tosses a pick in the end zone. Awful.

(2:43 PT) Penn State opens second half with Boldin, which results in nothing. McGloin, who is 11-of-16, then comes in and all of a sudden the Nittany Lions are moving the football. Makes no sense.

(2:33 PT) Rob Veno recommends Nevada/UNLV Over 28 1st half.

(2:08 PT) Teddy Covers recommends Arizona -2 2nd half.

(2:06 PT) Rob Veno recommends Missouri -3.5 2nd half.

(2:03 PT) Teddy Covers recommends Arizona State -0.5 2nd half.

(2:02 PT) Erin Rynning recommends Penn State Over 21 2nd half.

(2:00 PT) Greatest box score EVER...if you have favorite/over parlay.

(1:52 PT) Central Michigan 15-of-17 passing in first half vs. NC State. 8.3 yards per play. Wolfpack lead 21-17.

(1:49 PT) NFL line move alert: Jets hit fairly hard, down Read more

NCAAF Betting Alert: Louisville offensive coordinator doesn't travel with team

10.07.2011     02:29 PM     Printer Friendly
Louisville at North Carolina -13.5 O/U 47

Well this can't be good. Louisville offensive coordinator Mike Sanford reportedly had a run in with a few fellow coaches and did not travel with the team to North Carolina. He was not present at the end of practice Tuesday or at Wednesday’s press conference. The Cardinals rank 105th in scoring offense.
