NCAA Football Handicapping: A look at quarterbacks in the PAC-12

05.25.2011     12:28 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Our conference quarterback coverage continues. Click links for SEC and Big XII. Of the original PAC-10 schools, all but Washington have the option of playing a returning starter at quarterback. Newbies Colorado and Utah also have returning starters.

North Division
Oregon
– Darren Thomas is back for his junior season. Under Chip Kelly, it doesn’t seem to matter who is taking the snaps with offensive production not too far behind. The one concern for Thomas and Kelly though has to be the offensive line situation. Kelly summed it up best when he said: “We lost three starters, three guys who had over 100 starts. That’s a big concern.” The Ducks boasted one of the most experienced and talented o-lines in the country last season.

Oregon State – There were some growing pains during Ryan Katz’ first full season but overall, he seems to fit the Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: A look at quarterbacks in the Big XII

05.24.2011     02:47 PM     Printer Friendly
Last week we broke down the returning quarterback situations in the SEC. Today we take a look at the Big XII (or Big Ten...or Big Eight +2...or whatever).

Texas – Junior Garrett Gilbert has not officially been named the starter but all signs point to him getting the nod. Gilbert though will have to perform better after posting a dismal 10-17 TD-to-INT ratio last year. In conference games, Gilbert's QB rating barely topped 100.0 which is pretty poor.

Oklahoma – Landry Jones enters the campaign as the top signal caller in the league after tossing 38 TDs and 4,700 yards in 2010. With Jones back as well as four o-line starters, the Sooners are Read more

A handicapper's take on the Western Conference Finals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last night’s late game collapse for Oklahoma City falls on Russell Westbrook and head coach Scotty Brooks. Westbrook took almost every meaningful shot from the four and half minute mark on and missed all but one. When the real crunch came after Dallas tied it up, you could see him coming out of the timeout giving a phony smile to one of his teammates as if to say, “Yeah, I got this.” You could tell he was nervous and was trying to convince himself that he was alright. Truth came off the in-bounds play when he immediately threw the “grenade” to Kevin Durant. Westbrook wanted nothing to do with that final shot; he knew he had blown the lead for his team and he didn't want to be responsible for missing the last shot which could've won it. Thus, Westbrook put the ball in Durant's hands and stood about three feet away from him as if he had no clue of the concepts of offensive spacing.

But Westbrook didn’t just hurt his team at the end of the game; his damage came as early as the first and Read more

Cakewalk City: Big Ten non-conference slate

05.18.2011     12:58 PM     Printer Friendly
You think the SEC's non-conference schedules are soft, take a look at who the Big Ten is playing this season. Not that this method is anything new, but worth pointing out.

Only 14 of a possible 48 non-conference games are against BCS schools. Only five of those 14 are on the road.

Of the 48, 10 are against FCS opponents and six more vs. Eastern Michigan (twice), North Texas, Arkansas State, New Mexico State and UL-Monroe (14-46 combined last season).

Only Penn State plays a team (Alabama) that finished in the AP's top 25 last season.

Here is a link to the non-conference games.

The results of losing your leading scorer in the NBA

05.18.2011     11:13 AM     Printer Friendly
An interesting blog the breaks down what would happen to NBA teams should they lose their leading scorer. The author uses "Wins Produced" as a measuring stick and calculates the expected change should the leading scorer be replaced by a league average player. The biggest "losses" would be Kevin Love (-20.2), Dwight Howard (-17.7) and LeBron James (-16.6).

There are actually some teams that would see their "Wins Produced" increase should their leading scorer go down. According to the chart, Toronto is 11.5 "wins" improved if Andrea Bargnani were out – likely due to his inefficiencies outside of just scoring.

This concept would very interesting at the college level where points are often easily replaced after the loss of a leading scorer – something not always reflected in the betting marketplace.

CFB Handicapping: A look at coaching in the MAC

05.18.2011     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
Last summer, we posted a blog on the MAC and the amount of coaching changes it has on a yearly basis. In 2010 there were three first-year coaches while this season there are five (Ball State, Kent State, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois and Temple). In the first years of current coaches or those who departed this past offseason, the overall records were 44-111, .283 (65-84-2 ATS). But as bad as first years have been for MAC coaches, improvement has typically followed. If we take the second year of the most recent coaches at all 13 programs, we get a record of 75-89, .457. Of those 13 schools, 11 saw improvement in the second season. For 2011, Buffalo, Akron and Central Michigan all have second-year head coaches. Taking it a step further, if we take the most recent coach’s third season, the combined record is 83-78 (82-67-7 ATS) – even more impressive at 82-67 Read more

PokerStars reportedly begins payout process

05.12.2011     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
According to recent reports, U.S. online poker players at PokerStars have reportedly been receiving payouts while Full Tilt is in the process of doing the same though some "internal issues" still need to be resolved. Absolute Poker meanwhile "remains a big question mark." John Pappas, executive director of Poker Player Alliance explained that PokerStars and Full Tilt have a big international client base which should make the payout process to U.S. players easier. Absolute Poker was primarily U.S. based.

"It would be easy to say that tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions of dollars, have kind of been held up in limbo here because of the DOJ (Department of Justice) action. It's impossible to put an exact number on it. I would estimate at least $100 million if not as much as $500 million."

"We understand that players on PokerStars have Read more

MLB Handicapping: Buy Low on these starting pitchers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This young MLB season isn’t quite so young anymore. We’re six weeks into the campaign, and already, like every year, we’ve got a bevy of misleading statistics to work with. My goal in this article is to identify a handful of starting pitchers that are already mispriced.

As I’ve written before, handicapping is not about identifying good or bad teams – the standings do that. Many bettors, me included, tend to avoid making many wagers on the very best or against the very worst ballclubs – those teams tend to be priced appropriately. Instead, beating the modern betting marketplace is about identifying value squads (and in MLB, identifying value pitchers) – both good and bad – that are mispriced in the short to medium term.

Last year, the three most profitable MLB teams to support were the San Diego Padres, the Cincinnati Reds and the Toronto Blue Jays. Only one of the three made the playoffs and none were considered elite teams at any point in the campaign.

No time like the present to regulate online gambling in the United States

05.09.2011     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Frank Fahrenkopf, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association, wrote a blog on how the time is right for the United States Government to step in and regulate online gambling.

With a few minor changes in existing legislation, Congress can create thousands of new jobs almost immediately and raise at least $20 billion in new tax revenues over the next decade.

By passing legislation that removes the current ambiguity of UIGEA and provides a strong regulatory framework that preserves states’ rights to determine what gambling options are available to their residents, Congress can eliminate the problems presented by inconsistent regulatory and legal practices.

NHL Playoff Betting Preview: San Jose at Detroit

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Jose +120 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: San Jose

Plain and simple, San Jose is a different team this postseason. Although their "choke" label won't go away without a Stanley Cup they have done plenty to quiet the critics. Up 3-0 in the series, the Sharks tore out the heart of the Red Wings last game by tying it up with a late third period goal and then winning in OT, 4-3. The Sharks have now won six straight meetings and 11 of the last 13 in the series. Goaltending for the Sharks has been instrumental as Antti Niemi has come up with some big saves; saves that Evgeni Nabokov couldn't make last postseason. Niemi gives his team an opportunity to win even if they aren't playing at 100%.

Lack of special teams’ efficiency has once again plagued Detroit. They were able to get away with a sloppy PK against the Coyotes, but against more skilled and talented teams like the Sharks that deficiency has been compounded. The Sharks can play breakeven 5-on-5 hockey but they tend to Read more
