NCAAF Betting Notes: Weis says Florida offense will pull out all the stops

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Alabama -3.5 at Florida O/U 45.5

After weeks of playing coy with the media in terms of opening the playbook, Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said he'll be pulling out all of the stops against Alabama this weekend.

"Sometimes when you're playing football, you have to realize that punting isn't necessarily a bad thing," Weis said. "We want to score a touchdown every time we get the ball. But you want to make sure you make good decisions where you don't make that critical mistake and give one to them.

"You play fundamental football and you have to go ahead and throw the kitchen sink at them. They're going to get the kitchen sink.

"You guys have been writing about holding things back. Well, you won't have to worry about that this week. They're going to get plenty."

College Football ATS Notes: Northwestern-Illinois stoke rivalry fire

Northwestern at Illinois -8 O/U 50

The battle for the Land of Lincoln Trophy isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think about heated rivalries. In fact, up until 10 minutes ago, we were unaware this little get together even had a name (they played for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk from 1945-2008). Anyway, the good news is that there has been some chirping from both sides over the past week. Last season, Northwestern made a big marketing push as "Chicago's Big Ten Team". But after getting waxed by Illinois, in Chicago, it was the Illini that made it clear who "owned" the town. Then there was Northwestern saying that it didn’t recruit “the type of kids” than end up going to Illinois. The Illini of course took it as a sign of disrespect – in reality, it was actually a pretty accurate observation. Read more

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: South Florida Bulls at Pittsburgh Panthers

South Florida at Pittsburgh (Thursday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: Pittsburgh pk O/U 51
CRIS Current Line: South Florida -2.5 O/U 52
Rob Veno Power Rating: South Florida -1
Teddy Covers Power Rating: South Florida -4.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: Prime opportunity for Pitt to get its season back on track with a Thursday night primetime affair against South Florida. The Panthers have not looked the part thus far; struggling with Todd Graham’s offense and not consistently playing the type of stout defense we saw under Dave Wannstedt. Graham seems pretty baffled that his team is so inept with the ball but unlike West Virginia, who was coming from a spread background, the change in philosophies for Pitt was more than just a few tweaks. After a solid sophomore campaign, quarterback Tino Sunseri has Read more

College Football Handicapping: Maryland not buying what Edsall is selling

09.27.2011     02:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After starting out the season with a bang, Maryland suddenly finds itself 1-2 with a brutal three-game stretch starting next week: at Georgia Tech, vs. Clemson, and at Florida State. Head coach Randy Edsall doesn't seem too happy with his team, especially after Saturday's 38-7 loss to Temple in which they completely laid down after trailing 21-0 after the first quarter. Edsall said that he is going to reshuffle the starting lineup and give some freshmen some playing time this week against FCS Towson. Probably not time to panic but keep an eye on how they come out on Saturday. Towson went 1-10 last year but is off to a 3-0 start including a win over Villanova. The Terps should be able to name the score but another lackluster performance may suggest that Edsall's motivational tactics – that worked extremely well in Storrs – simply aren’t reaching the team. NCAAF Pointspread Alert: Bettors once again flock towards Utah State

Utah State at BYU -7.5 O/U 50

Some may look to this game as "revenge" for BYU after losing to Utah State 31-16 last year but the Cougars are downplaying the angle. In fact, the loss could almost be considered a positive because it promoted Bronco Mendenhall to take over the defense after firing his defensive coordinator and the team closed the season on a 6-2 run.

Utah State comes in off a disappointing overtime loss to injury-ravaged Colorado State. The Aggies have done a good job at times stepping way up in class with a close lose at Oklahoma and win over BYU last season as well as their near monumental upset at Auburn in Week 1. But for every eye popping performance there are two that leave bettors scratching their heads. Interestingly, this marks the second straight week the Aggies have been absolutely pounded by the betting markets. Against Read more

College Football Betting Futures: Odds to win conference titles

09.27.2011     01:02 PM     Printer Friendly
Quick look at some adjusted odds to win conference championships courtesy of the Greek (see chart below). The one line that stands out the most is Pittsburgh +8000 to win the Big East despite everyone still 0-0 in league play. The Panthers have their faults, but if they can get past South Florida on Thursday, they play both Cincinnati and West Virginia off of bye weeks. With no one yet to establish any dominance we could very easily see two or three teams finish atop the standings (tiebreaker would determine winner) leaving tremendous value on Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Depth chart looks bleak for NC State defense

09.27.2011     12:03 PM     Printer Friendly
Georgia Tech -11.5 at NC State O/U 63

NC State's injury situation is already at epic proportions with as many as four starters currently sidelined (see chart below). According to the school’s depth chart, of the 22 first and second string defenders, 14 are underclassmen. The situation was on full display last Thursday as Cincinnati rolled up 44 points and 503 yards on this devastated unit. As if things couldn't get any worse, the nation's top offense is headed to Raleigh this weekend.

The Wolf Pack did beat the Georgia Tech rather handedly last year, 45-28. But that was with Russell Wilson under center (368 yards, 3 TDs), linebacker Nate Irving causing havoc (16 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2 sacks) and a full complement of starters.

College Football ATS Notes: Georgia offense starting to find its groove

Mississippi State at Georgia -6.5 O/U 53

Georgia's offense is starting to click thanks to an emphasis on playing at a faster pace. The Bulldogs are averaging 73 plays per game and reeled off 82 in last week's win over Ole Miss. In that game UGA produced 475 yards of offense for nearly 6.0 ypp. Their 24-point output looks marginal, but they did miss three field goals in the second half. On the season, Georgia ranks 23rd nationally in offensive plays (292), t42nd in yards per play (6.0) and 36th in total offense (438.5). Keep in mind they faced two pretty solid defenses in Boise State and South Carolina. The Bulldogs have now gone over the total in three of four games.

"I think the whole offense, we've been doing it now since spring, all summer, all now, so I think we feel great in it," Jones said. Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Virginia Tech defense braces for red hot Clemson

Clemson at Virginia Tech -7 O/U 49

In their first step up in defense class, Clemson new up-tempo offense literally passed with flying colors with 455 yards of offense and only three punts in last week's win over Florida State. They'll get another test this weekend in Blacksburg against the Hokies. Tech's defense has looked strong (10 ppg allowed) and did face two up-tempo teams in East Carolina and Arkansas State but the Tigers are a completely different animal. According to VT defensive coordinator Bud Foster, completely shutting down Clemson's offense is probably unrealistic.

“I don’t know if you can stop offenses today when it’s all said and done. What do you call stopping them, I don’t know? We have our hands full. They have a lot of weapons, they can spread it out, and their quarterback can get Read more

College Football Gambling: Pittsburgh not taking to Graham's offense

South Florida -2 at Pittsburgh O/U 52.5

Pittsburgh is having a really difficult time adjusting to first-year head coach Todd Graham's offense. The Panthers rank 81st in total offense (370.3 ypg). Perhaps the most alarming stat is the 18 sacks (worst in the country) they've allowed – a vast majority of which because quarterback Tino Sunseri held on to the ball too long. That doesn't bode well for Thursday's matchup against South Florida who already has 11 sacks and 33 tackles for loss. In a recent press conference, Graham was fairly candid about how bad the offense has been.

“I don't think there is much more we can do (to simplify) offensively. It is about as simple as it can get," Graham said. "It’s almost so simple that it’s hard to watch for me. We have to Read more
