NCAA Hoops Betting: New Mexico hopes to avoid post Thanksgiving tournament blues

11.30.2011     10:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Idaho State at New Mexico -21.5 O/U 136.5

We saw over the past two days that teams coming off of Thanksgiving tournaments were not particularly sharp. Tennessee lost at Oakland on Monday and Michigan and Duke got smoked last night after all three played in Maui. Upstart St. Louis swept all three games at the 76 Classic in Anaheim but lost outright as 9-point road favorites last night at Loyola Marymount. Tonight will mark the fourth game in seven days for New Mexico as the Lobos returned from California on Monday afternoon. Idaho State shouldn't pose much of a challenge but covering three touchdowns could prove difficult for a fatigued team.

“We can’t allow it to be,” UNM coach Steve Alford told the Journal on Tuesday. “It’s a challenge, but the guys have to perform at a high level with a quick Read more

College Basketball Free Play: BYU Cougars vs. Northern Arizona Lumberjacks

BYU -15 vs. Northern Arizona O/U 138
Recommendation: BYU

It is going to be a rough season for Northern Arizona. Not only did the Lumberjacks lose all-everything Cameron Jones (20.1 ppg), but also his wingman, returning starter Gabe Rodgers (13.0 ppg, 46.8 3-point), who has yet to play this season with a shoulder injury. Add in Eric Platt (10.1 ppg, 46.0% 3-point) and Shane Johannsen (9.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and all the Lumberjacks are left with is starting point guard Stallon Saldivar – the team's last scoring option last season. The results thus far have shown just how much of a drop-off there has been with losses by 17, 19, 12 and 20 to mediocre DI competition – none of which in BYU's class. Even without Jimmer, BYU has shown the ability to outclass opponents with blowout wins over Longwood, Prairie View and Nevada, And forget about home court advantage. NAU has little to no fan base (740 was the average attendance last season, and that was with a Read more

College Basketball Pointspread News: Arkansas short on depth, freshmen heavy

11.30.2011     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas is down to nine scholarship players as first-year head coach Mike Anderson has being using multiple freshmen to fill his rotation. The first-year players have carried much of the load through five games but the competition will stiffen starting Saturday with a road trip to UConn followed by another road game at Oklahoma. But before the Razorbacks start prepping for the Huskies, they must first get past non-boarded Mississippi Valley State tonight in Fayetteville. The Delta Devils reportedly start five seniors and have already hung with the likes of Notre Dame (lost by 13), De Paul (lost by 10) and South Carolina (lost by 4). It will be interesting to see if Anderson's continues to employ his "40 Minutes of Hell" philosophy with such a limited about of depth and experience.

"I thought (the freshmen) took the tempo up another level and kept the crowd into it. That's what I'm looking for - deflections, diving on the floor, taking charges, dunks, great passing. It was good to see that and it's exciting Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting News: Minnesota adjusts lineup for frontcourt injuries

11.30.2011     05:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech at Minnesota -2.5 O/U 134

Minnesota will be without the services of forward Trevor Mbakwe (14.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg) who was lost for the season with an ALC injury. Mbakwe was without question the team's top performer thus far. Also banged up is center Ralph Sampson III, who has been a non-factor the last two games with an ankle injury (questionable for tonight). The frontcourt duo combined for nearly 13 rebounds per game and well above 50% from the floor. According to head coach Tubby Smith, the Golden Gophers will have to go with a more "small ball" lineup moving forward.

"We won't change much, we just won't have that inside presence that Trevor gave us because I'm still not sure about Ralph's status," Smith said at the press conference. "(Sampson) didn't practice yesterday, and he probably won't practice today, so he may Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Maryland Terrapins struggling to compete

11.29.2011     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois -4 at Maryland O/U 133

The transition from Gary Williams to Mark Turgeon continues to be a challenge for the Maryland Terrapins. Turgeon is no Bobby Knight, but he demands a lot of out his kids, especially on defense. When players buy into what he is selling, positive results typically follow. Unfortunately, Turgeon and his players currently aren't on the same page. They've tried to slow down the pace of the game in order to mask their shortage of depth (seven scholarship players). And freshman starting point guard Nick Faust was a shooting guard as recently as October. Turgeon voiced his concern for tonight's matchup as Illinois goes 10-11 deep. Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Arizona adjusts lineup following offensive struggles

Arizona at New Mexico State -3.5 O/U 143

Following back-to-back 57-point outputs, Arizona plans on making some adjustments for tonight's game at New Mexico State. The Wildcats fell behind early to San Diego State and Mississippi State and head coach Sean Miller said that that particular starting five "will never start another game (together) at Arizona." That likely means one of Arizona's highly regarded freshmen will move into the lineup. NMSU opened as a 1.5-point favorite but were bet up to a current number of -3.5.

College Basketball Handicapping: Ken Pomeroy favors Big Ten over ACC

11.29.2011     06:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ken Pomeroy does he best to explain the potential outcomes of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. According to Pomeroy's numbers, the Big Ten is "favored" in nine of the 12 matchups with a 7-5 being the most likely result. He notes however that for whatever reason, Wisconsin is favored at North Carolina and Virginia Tech's odds are increased with Minnesota big man Trevor Mbakwe (14.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg) out for the year with a torn ACL. In terms of the pointspreads for today's matchups, the Big Ten is favored in four of the six with Clemson at Iowa a pick 'em and Michigan a 2-point road underdog vs. Virginia. We've seen a small move towards the Big Ten as The Greek posted ACC -220/Big Ten +180 yesterday but now showing ACC -200/ Big Ten +170.

College Basketball Gambling Notes: Taking a look at the money earners

11.28.2011     02:34 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On Sunday, I discussed some of college basketball’s early season “money burners”. Let’s take a look at those who are cashing tickets at a high rate and see whether or not the good fortune will last.

Saint Louis (5-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/29 at Loyola Marymount) - The Bilikens took their lumps last season with a youthful roster and various suspensions/injuries. The results thus far are real with convincing wins over Washington, Villanova and Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see whether or not they can maintain their intensity and handle the hype – especially with an easy December and inflated numbers – prior to A-10 play. Check out this slate of opponents: Loyola Marymount, Portland, Vermont, Illinois-Springfield, Alabama State, Arkansas State and Texas Southern. That should be seven wins before traveling to New Mexico on December 31.

Duquesne (4-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/30 vs. Pittsburgh) - The Dukes have shown no signs of missing Read more
