Betting on the best teams in Collge Football hasn't worked out thus far

10.01.2012     01:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College football rankings are something we don't pay much attention to but we can't help but notice some of the poor spread records of the best teams (or so the media says) in the country. Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, LSU and Georgia are your current AP Top 5 and not one has a winning mark ATS (8-16 ATS combined). The combined mark of the Top 10 gets bolstered by up-and-comers Florida (3-1 ATS), Notre Dame (3-1) and Kansas State (3-1). Even more intriguing is the AP's Preseason Top 10 and only one team (South Carolina, 4-1) out of that group has a winning spread record. Those 10 teams combined are 15-29 ATS. If you remember back to last season, there was a long stretch where ranked teams were covering games at a furious rate. We found an old blog dated from October 25th that mentioned the AP Top 10 was 56-15-1 ATS.

College Foobtall Betting: SEC News and Notes Week 5

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas has turned into a downright embarrassment to the SEC now after losing 58-10 to Texas A&M last week. The Hogs have committed 15 turnovers on the season and forced just two. The defense has now allowed over 2,500 yards in five games and there appears to be no answers coming from bankrupt head coach John L. Smith. Arkansas is now a 10-point underdog at Auburn. War Eagle comes in off of a bye after battling LSU to a two-point loss two weeks ago.

The most exciting game of the week was in Athens as 5th ranked Georgia held off Tennessee, 51-44. The two teams combined for 1,038 yards of offense and seven turnovers while scoring six touchdowns on plays longer than 32 yards. The Tennessee run defense was gashed again, as both Georgia running backs had over 130 yards and the Bulldogs finished with 282 yards on the ground.

The other three SEC teams ranked in the top six in the nation – Alabama, LSU, and South Carolina – were in action but not at the top of their respective games. South Carolina actually trailed Kentucky 17-7 at halftime, and the Wildcats were once again without starting quarterback Maxwell Smith, who left during the Cats’ Read more

College Football Gambling: West Virginia talks defense following win over Baylor

West Virginia at Texas -6.5

Pretty amazing that West Virginia had the No. 3 ranked total defense in the country just two seasons ago. Yeah, it was against the Big East, but you don't hold teams to 261 ypg without talent and ability. Fast forward to the Dana Holgorsen era. Last year's seasonal numbers were decent but on multiple occasions they were exposed (47 vs. LSU, 49 vs. Syracuse, 38 vs. Louisville). Obviously the Mountaineers are playing and scoring at a much faster pace thus giving the opposition more chances. However, what took place on Saturday has to concern bettors as this team prepares for the meat of Big XII play. The good news is the coaches and players were pretty upset following the game. The bad news is that in no way guarantees any improvement.

"I walked off the field," Cook said, referencing the celebration that Read more

College Football Handicapping: East Carolina embraces 3-4 defense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
East Carolina at Central Florida -14.5

We mentioned last week how Tennessee was having difficulty adjusting to its newly implemented 3-4 defensive scheme (they allowed 560 yards and 51 points to Georgia on Saturday). East Carolina meanwhile is two years into its 3-4 scheme and the switch is starting to pay off. In 2010, ECU ranked dead last nationally in total defense at 478.8 ypg. Last year they jumped to 56th (376.3). This year, with the exception of the South Carolina game (48 points, 528 yards) the Pirates have been solid holding Appalachian State, Southern Miss, North Carolina and UTEP 18 ppg. Read more

College Football Betting: Utah focused for USC following bye week

USC -13 at Utah

The Utah Utes come in off a much needed bye week before playing host to USC on Thursday. After losing to Utah State in overtime in Week 2, the Utes slipped past BYU 24-21, but were then manhandled at Arizona State, 37-7. Head coach Kyle Whittingham is 6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS off of a bye.

"The players have worked hard. We take bye weeks — not as a vacation time — but we work hard on the field," Whittingham said. "We put the pads on but a lot of teams do the same thing. So I can't tell you if that's just a product of good fortune or if it's something we're doing specifically. I couldn't tell you."

Sportsmemo's College Football Week 5 Betting Recap

10.01.2012     05:49 AM     Printer Friendly
By the betting numbers...College Football Week 5 (see results below). Note that we use CRIS's opening and closing lines. We do not include games involving FCS teams.

Based on closing lines…

Road teams were the strongest side bet at 27-20 ATS (Exact same record as last week; Road teams are 117-101 ATS YTD). One game pushed (Utah State -22 vs. UNLV). There were three neutral site games (indicated by *).

Underdogs and favorite split out 25-25 ATS (Underdogs are 120-104 ATS YTD). One game pushed (Utah State -22 vs. UNLV).

Double-digits spreads went the way of the underdogs at 15-8 ATS (DD underdogs are 70-54 ATS YTD).

20 of 51 games were decided by 7 points or less.

Totals went 28-23 Over/Under (115-116-2 O/U YTD).

Beating the Market: If you bet the opening number on a team that moved three points or more based on the closing line (i.e. Utah State -17) you went: 9-2 ATS (32-21 ATS YTD)

Chasing the Market: If you bet the closing number on a team that moved three points or more (i.e. Utah State -22) you went: 7-3-1 ATS (27-23-3 ATS YTD).

Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" 25 times but "incorrect" 20 times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." Note that in six games, the game opened and closed at the same number.

Parlay combo breakdown (50 games) (221 games YTD)
Favorite-Over: 15 (57 YTD)
Favorite-Under: 10 (45 YTD)
Underdog-Over: 13 (53 YTD)
Underdog-Under: 12 (66 YTD)

Note that we did not include pick ‘em lines and pushes in our parlay combos.

College Football Betting Free Pick: Indiana Hoosiers at Northwestern Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana at Northwestern -11 O/U 59.5
Recommendation: Over

The Hoosiers hit Big Ten play with a chip on their shoulder off their winless conference season in 2011.  Included in their epic failings last season was a 59-38 loss to Northwestern, as they allowed over 600 yards of offense.  This is still very much a rebuilding program, while they feature just eight seniors on their roster as Big Ten road play will prove troubling.  The Hoosiers should still be able to score the football as they’ve averaged 36 points per game in 2012.  The loss of sophomore quarterback Tre Roberson was expected to be a major blow, but they actually will improve in the passing game with JC transfer Cameron Coffman.  In limited action he’s completed 40 of 57 passes for about 400 yards.  In addition, he looks to speed up an already fast pace Hoosiers offense.  However, on defense the Hoosiers will continue to face major issues stopping the run Read more

College Football Handicapping: Betting totals with the four FCS newcomers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With either three or four games under their belts and conference play either beginning or right around the corner, this seems like a good time to examine the four first-year FCS teams from a totals perspective.

Massachusetts – The Minutemen have been simply abysmal on each side of the ball. Their 263.3 total yards offense per game has resulted in an average of 8.8 points scored while the 492.8 yards they’ve allowed has produced 43.0 points per game for their opponents. The one noticeable thing about UMass statistically is that they don’t do anything well. The closing totals on their four games have ranged from 47-55 with two going over and two staying under. Except for a trip to Vanderbilt the last week of October, all Massachusetts games will be against MAC opponents. This team is scoring one point for every 30 yards gained and against two of the nation’s worst defenses (Indiana and Miami-Ohio) those ratios were 1/44.0 and 1/29.4 respectively. The inept offense seems to be a larger factor in their current total of 54 this week versus offensive power Ohio. If the oddsmakers keep UMass totals in this vicinity then my Read more
