College Football Handicapping: Week 8 Injury Report

10.16.2013     08:24 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Before the loss to Texas last week, Oklahoma found out it would be missing senior LB Corey Nelson for the rest of the season due to a pectoral injury. The news got worse earlier this week when starting defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was lost for the rest of the year. Phillips will underdog surgery soon to relieve chronic back pain. Without Nelson and Phillips, the OU defense gave up 36 points and 255 rushing yards to the Longhorns. The Sooners had previously been allowing only 113.2 ypg and 13.0 ppg, so obviously Nelson and Phillips are already being missed.

Ole Miss will be without freshman sensation Robert Nkemdiche for the next three games due to a pulled hamstring suffered in last week’s gut-wrenching loss to Texas A&M. The Rebels might also be sans their other starting defensive end, C.J. Johnson, for Saturday’s home tussle vs. LSU. Johnson was downgraded to ‘doubtful’ after missing Tuesday’s practice with a sprained ankle. The offense is hurting, too, as one of its top weapons is ‘doubtful.’ That would be leading rusher and special-teams dynamo Jeff Scott (thigh), who is averaging 8.2 yards per carry and had a punt Read more

College Football Betting: Louisiana Tech ditches pass-happy, up-tempo style for run-game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
North Texas -6.5 at Louisiana Tech O/U 54.5

Louisiana Tech's run of UNDERS (5 straight) came to an end last time out against UTEP as the Bulldogs hung on for a 38-35 win. In the win, Tech ran the ball 50 times for 353 yards – a style that head coach Skip Holtz feels gives his squad the best chance to win.

“I would say we are run-oriented,” Holtz said. “When you talk about balance, we are not talking about running and throwing the ball equally. You need to be able to take advantage of what a defense gives you. If you are a run team that cannot throw, you are eventually going to have a lot of hats in the box. I would say with a back like Kenneth Dixon and with what Blake Martin has done stepping in for Tevin King, we are a run-oriented football team first. I would like to see us

College Football Handicapping: Oklahoma State seeks faster pace vs. TCU

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
TCU at Oklahoma State -7 O/U 50.5

Oklahoma State is looking to get back to its up-tempo ways against TCU. The Cowboys ran a rather pedestrian 65 plays against Kansas State and are averaging only 74.8 plays per game. They've also had difficulty moving the football: 5.3 yards per play vs. Mississippi State, West Virginia, and K-State.

“We lost three receivers for the last game, so it limited our ability to play fast,” Gundy said. “There are times in a game where we can move really quick, then based on matchups and what we think gives us the best chance to score points, it varies some from week to week.”

“We try to be as fast as we can in order to try to wear (an opponent’s) defense out and trying to disrupt their communication,” offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said. “We have to

College Football Gambling: Teams have been able to contain Michigan's run game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana at Michigan -7.5 O/U 67

Seen a lot of market support for Indiana this week as the Hoosiers head to the Big House to take on Michigan. The Wolverines opened -12 at CRIS and -10.5 at Pinnacle but were bet down to -7.5/-8. Heading into the season, Michigan was adamant about developing a downhill rushing attack but teams have been able to key in on the run due to Devin Gardner's struggles in the passing game (11 TDs, 10 INTs). Against Notre Dame, Minnesota, and Penn State, Michigan averaged only 3.3 yards per carry. Things should improve this weekend considering the Hoosiers rank 110th against the run (216.5 ypg allowed).

"I don't like it, but you do what you have to do to win the game end of discussion," Borges said when asked about

College Football Betting: Oklahoma hopes to avoid letdown vs. Kansas

Oklahoma -23 at Kansas O/U 49

Can't help but view Saturday's game at Kansas as a potential letdown spot for the Oklahoma Sooners following their Red River Rivalry loss to Texas. OU still controls its own destiny in the Big XII race and has much bigger fish to fry upcoming with games at Baylor, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.

"I've talked to our guys about playing this week against Kansas," Stoops said. "Everybody wants to project to the end of the year. We've been doing it for the last couple of weeks and you can't do it. All we can do is prepare to be as good as we can be for Kansas and that's it."

College Football Handicapping: Community Power Ratings Week 8

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Going forward, let’s just call these “community” Power Ratings. Feel free to post comments below or alert me on twitter (@jefffogle) if you think we have a misread on a team. The numbers already reflect a composite of market influences, stats, and college football discussions anyway. We’ll just call them “community” rankings for this sport.

Some of you who have known me awhile will recognize this from past years in sports betting forums. Though, back then I was trying to get a “power of the collective” thing going in the NFL. It generally ended up being my read of the markets with three of four nice posters stepping into say “thank you” afterward. Not really the COMMUNITY effort I was hoping for. But, a lot of people are shy, and just want to see some numbers anyway. I’m going to stick with “Estimated Market” ratings right now for the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Kansas' Weis asks for help with offense

Oklahoma -23.5 at Kansas O/U 48

Following offensive outputs of 14, 13, 16, and 17 points, Kansas head coach Charlie Weis said that he's open to any and all ideas from the rest of the coaching staff in terms of coming up with better ways to move the football. Weis had previously been the lone creator of the week-to-week game plan.

"More than coordination, it’s going to be more guys getting to interject ways of how can we improve the offense, how can we score more points," Weis said. "I felt like I had to back off a little bit or we weren’t going to get any better."

"I think what happens a lot times when you have a veteran coach that has been running offenses for a long time … sometimes you hold in ideas because the offensive coordinator already has a bunch of them on their

College Football Handicapping: UL-Lafayette travels to Western Kentucky

10.15.2013     07:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Western Kentucky -4 O/U 62.5

Funky early week matchup in the Sun Belt tonight with UL-Lafayette headed to Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers have covered three straight in the series, all as an underdog. WKU last played October 3, while ULL has played only one game since September 21. Historically, no real angle for home teams in these situations (31-29 SU, 28-31-1 ATS) but the UNDER has been a profitable bet at 16-25-1 O/U.
