College Football Betting Preview: Fresno State Bulldogs at USC Trojans

08.28.2014     02:32 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fresno State at USC
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
USC -22 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -21.5 O/U 57.5
Ian’s Recommendation: USC

Rematch of last year’s Las Vegas Bowl in which USC demolished a better Fresno State squad, 45-20. Fresno State’s success was contingent upon its offense behind quarterback Derek Carr. He has since moved on to the NFL and head coach Tim DeRuyter has narrowed his replacement down to either junior Brian Burrell or Duke transfer Brandon Connette. Regardless of who starts both are expected to play on Saturday. This uncertainty doesn’t bode well for Fresno State against a stellar USC defense that welcomes back one of the best defensive lines in the country with Leonard Williams, J.R. Tavai, and Antwaun Woods. And behind them, even with the loss of Jabari Ruffin to a season ending torn ACL injury, they are still very strong Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at Northwestern Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
California at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -12 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Northwestern -11 O/U 60
Andrew's Recommendation: Northwestern

The thing to remember about Cal is if we go back to the early portion of head coach Sonny Dykes' first season there were signs of potential. In Week 1 Cal had Northwestern on the ropes in Berkley before two costly second half interceptions gave the far more experience Wildcats the 44-30 win. And in Week 3, Cal was eventually blown out but hung over 500 yards on a 12-win Ohio State squad. Then the wheels came off as injuries set in, their lack of depth was exposed, and Dykes' pedal-to-the-metal offense put a ridiculous amount of pressure of what would end up being one the worst defenses in the country. My point? If Cal was good enough to play with Northwestern and move the ball vs. Ohio State then a year later (wiser, stronger, and healthier) Read more

College Football Betting: Friedgen makes his OC debut for Rutgers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers vs. Washington State -8 O/U 63

Good article on Rutgers offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen. The Fridge has been tight-lipped about how the Scarlet Knights will line up for Thursday's opener vs. Washington State (at Seattle). His Maryland teams were pretty balanced but head coach Kyle Flood said he wouldn't mind utilizing some form of the spread at times.

"I thought he would be a perfect fit for us because he was a pro-style coordinator that had a lot of flexibility in his run and pass, which is something I'm always looking for,'' Flood said, describing why he lured Friedgen out of retirement. "For Ralph to decide to come back to football, and to come back to Rutgers to do it, I couldn't me more excited. We've got one of the premier offensive minds of the Read more

College Football Gambling: Fresno likely to play two quarterbacks vs. USC

08.27.2014     02:39 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fresno State at USC -22 O/U 58

Fresno State remains mum on who will start at quarterback for Saturday's opener at USC. Head coach Tim DeRuyter seems to have faith in both Brian Burrell and Brandon Connette so expect both to see time vs. the Trojans.

"One guy's got to be the first guy to step on that field, but we both have put in the time and the work. Every single practice and scrimmage, we've played to the best of our ability and we've both gotten better."

Added DeRuyter: "I like where we're at quarterback. But we'll see when we get live bullets how both of them handle it.

"It probably won't be settled until we get into the league as to who's going to be our quarterback Read more

NFL Preseason Handicapping: San Diego and Arizona play first of a back-to-back

08.27.2014     02:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona at San Diego -3 O/U 39

Bettors should be aware that Arizona and San Diego not only close out the preseason but turn right around and play each other in the regular season opener (at Arizona) on Monday, September 9.

“Well, it will be a first for me and I think for a lot of people,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy.  “I think you’re not going to show as many things.  You’re going to do certain things against them you may not be doing in the opener, but I also want to put the players in a position to succeed and give them a chance to make this football team.  We’re going to do what we do.”

Nevada sportsbooks seek to get rid of federal tax

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ever wonder where exactly your tax dollars are going? Nevada's sportsbooks raised their hands on that one got a pretty interesting response. The IRS had no freakin' clue. Rep. Dina Titus is wanting to get rid of the tax and keep the money within the state.

“The IRS didn’t even know it existed,” Titus said. “The money just went into some black hole in the general fund. […] It can be reinvested into Nevada’s economy. Gaming is our lifeblood, and this is a drop in the bucket to Washington.”

Fantasy football skirts anti-online gambling laws

08.27.2014     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
The argument of whether or not fantasy football is gambling rages on...

"You have to figure out who to draft, play, trade and all those things to have a successful season," Cabot said. "And because you're doing all that, you're betting on an outcome you can control."

"It depends on how you run your game," Cabot said. "If you said, 'We're going to do fantasy, quick pick, random drafts,' I say, 'How can that be skill based?' But if it's a daily game where you're doing a draft, have the ability to change players halfway through the game and make all these decisions, then it's much closer to a traditional model."

College Football Betting Preview: UNLV Rebels at Arizona Wildcats

UNLV at Arizona
Friday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Arizona -24 O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: Arizona -23.5 O/U 60
Teddy's Recommendation: Arizona

Arizona came to Las Vegas and thoroughly whipped the Rebels last year; a 58-13 blowout that was every bit as lopsided on the field as the final score would suggest. The Wildcats held an enormous team speed advantage to go along with their size edge, creating one big play TD after the next.

UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck following the game in which UNLV trailed by 39 at halftime: “Congratulations to Arizona for coming in and beating the hell out of us. We’ve got to flush this game and move on to the next one because there are no positives.”  The loss actually sparked the UNLV season, a season that they turned around immediately following that defeat with four wins in their next four games, culminating in the Rebels first bowl bid since 2000.

College Football Betting Preview: Abilene Christian Wildcats at Georgia State Panthers

Abilene Christian at Georgia State
Wednesday, 5 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Georgia State -5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Georgia State -4 O/U 60.5
Drew’s Recommendation: Under

If you were to glance at Abilene Christian’s offensive production last year, you would undoubtedly come away impressed. But when you start to dig a little deeper however, you find a couple key stats that stand out. Not accounting for the likes of Concordia-Selma, Houston Baptist, and the Incarnate Word, final scores (84-6, 69-12, 40-6) respectfully, in five of six competitive games last year the Wildcats averaged 2.436 plays per minute of possession. This doesn’t exactly scream that “tempo” is a top priority. With head coach Ken Collums and offensive coordinator Nathan Young returning, I see no reason for this tendency to change. Moreover, they will be breaking in a new quarterback behind virtually an entirely new offensive line. This is not a good combo when trying to replace 4,500 yards and 48 touchdowns of offensive production.

NHL is reportedly headed to Las Vegas

08.27.2014     06:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL in Las Vegas? The NHL in Las Vegas! Reports are saying a team in Sin City is a "done deal" as the league looks to expands in the not-so-distant future. The Las Vegas Coolers, Blackjacks, and Dice were some of the team names Twitter came up with last night. We’ll go ahead and tell you right now that the nickname won’t have anything to do with gambling -- even though all three of those are pretty cool. Bank on something that relates to the desert, Area 51, the heat, or cowboys.

Sources close to the situation have indicated Las Vegas is a done deal, the only thing to be determined being which owner will be entitled to proclaim that he brought the first major league sports franchise to Sin City.
