Should bettors be concerned about the NFL referee lockout?

07.20.2012     01:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some updated links on the NFL referee lockout situation. Some folks are making a big deal about it, including the refs currently on strike who (shocker!) said the level of acumen will be alarmingly low.

“You have to realize that there is no game if the competitive nature of this game isn’t controlled,” Markbreit said this morning during a visit on the Danny Mac Show on WSCR-670 AM in Chicago. “The NFL officials, the best in the land, are the ones that control this game. When you put replacements in there, you are compromising the nature of the game.

Others, like Chicago's Brian Urlacher, don’t seem to think it will matter.

"Were the refs that we had before good? Seriously, it doesn’t really matter. Yes, there are officials that have been around a while and you know their names and have relationships. But at the same time, it doesn't matter."

Because of some sort of ties, Division I refs are not expected to serve as replacements. They will instead come from the junior college and high school ranks

“Some of the officials were going up to the players and asking for autographs,” he said. “That's how ridiculous it is.”
