The NY Yankees delivered our third straight MLB
20* Big Drive Big Bertha
winner this week as they battered the Braves 11-7 last night as anticipated. You can read my analysis
below that was provided to Fairway’s faithful followers and pay for play subscribers. Glad we could
whack another winner over the wall and tonight we’ll
shoot for more profit and
green with another underdog road warrior worthy of 20* Big Drive status. Fairway’s forecast sees more pitching problems for the home team that is struggling and has a ‘sour’ starter that could get
ripped and a failing bullpen that struggles to throw the ball over the plate.
Also on quite a run are the Fairway Sportsmemo Newsletter best bets provided exclusively to newsletter subscribers and periodically right here in the Fairway blog only at Sportsmemo.com. Last week we nailed another winner with Wandy (Rodriguez) on the 5-inning line as Houston topped the Twins early and secured a full game winner for us also, 4-1. That winner ran our newsletter best bets to 17-5 since January. Not bad for a week’s advance write-up. Sometimes we’re thrown a curveball, as our projected pitching match-up didn’t materialize tonight and our newsletter play is ‘scratched’ from the lineup as Colorado left hander Jorge De La Rosa will start Saturday.
Keep that in mind as following the A’s 6-3 loss to 45-year old lefty Randy Johnson (1 earned run) and the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, Oakland is now just 10-17 versus southpaw starters this season – the worst in the American League. Not sure why the A’s had six left handed bats in the lineup against Johnson, as Oakland entered the week batting just .208 against left-handed pitching – the lowest in the majors. De La Rosa has been pretty solid pitching on the road away from hitter-friendly Coors Field, and he’s dominated left-handed hitters this season with a .183 batting average against and WHIP under .85. Oakland Coliseum is one of the lowest run-producing parks in the AL, and the A’s will send 21-year old rookie right-hander Trevor Cahill to the mound Saturday to oppose De La Rosa. Cahill has been terrific in June while lowering his ERA from 4.45 to 3.68. He’s tossed 31 innings this month and allowed just eight earned runs on 24 hits. We’ll watch the Friday night results but Saturday may shape up to be a nice shot on the ‘under’ 5-inning line and possibly game total with De La Rosa and Cahill ready to control the opponents bats.

The NY bats broke out late yesterday, and expect that to continue in the series finale with the Braves. The Yankees hitters know Derek Lowe well, and he is 8-10 lifetime against NY with an ERA over 6.00. Meanwhile, Andy Pettitte comes off a 3-hit gem at Florida and has just one road loss in six starts with a road ERA under 2.40 and BAA under .210. Over the Yankees last nine games, NY pitchers have an ERA under 2.70 and BAA of .207 with a dominating bullpen holding hitters to under a .135 batting average with a 35/6 K to BB ratio over that span. The Braves bats are weak and hitting under .260 overall while the Yanks have a stronger lineup that can batter a weaker Braves bullpen prone to walks once they knock out Lowe. A unusual fair price on the Yankees to take the rubber game.
Friday night the Brewer’s bats will take their hacks against very capable Mike Cain and the Giants. Money is coming in on Milwaukee and San Francisco is a good sized underdog (+145), but it may shock you when you check out the standings to see the Giants with the second best record in the National League (39-32). Following the Giants win over Oakland Wednesday, San Francisco has now won seven of their last nine series with a split in another. They have been on a roller coaster ride with some of their results, but Cain (9-1 / 2.28 ERA) has been dominant and the Giants have won the last nine games that Cain has started. Backing up Cain is the NL’s top bullpen sporting an ERA of 3.39. Milwaukee’s bullpen has also been solid this season, and was called on consistently the past three days against the Twins, who dominated their nearby neighbor in Interleague play again. Milwaukee left-handed reliever Mitch Stetter has an amazing streak going with 14-consecutive outs recorded via strikeout. However, the Brewers starting staff is battered and beaten as Bush just went on the DL and Parra was sent to the minors. Yovanni Gallardo is on tap for the Brewers at Miller Park tonight, and while he’s been the anchor of the starting staff, his recent control struggles cause some concern. Despite a 3-14 road record at Milwaukee, we’ll fire with a free shot on the Giants and Cain tonight as big ‘Dog, as one team is playing with confidence and has a Cy Young caliber starter coming off two stellar performances while the home team has question’s and is trying to regain their confidence.
