49ers have difficulty completing coach-to-quarterback play calls

09.17.2010     08:05 AM     Printer Friendly
New Orleans -5.5 at San Francisco O/U 44

In last week's embarrassing loss at Seattle, the 49ers were having what was described as communication issues. So much so that they were forced to burn three timeouts and got called for delay-of-game penalty in the first half. Quarterback Alex Smith called out the coaching staff, saying the plays weren't getting to him quick enough. This after a bunch of coaching maneuvers and changes during the offseason – which apparently haven't helped. We wonder if Mike Singletary showed THIS at Monday's team meeting.

“It seems like Jimmy [Rahe] calls plays from memory a lot of the time and not exactly the way it’s written down,” said one of the aforementioned sources, adding that the plays often get garbled. “He knows the plays and he knows the right thing to call, but he’s fumbling through his papers and it’s like, ‘Hey, we need to get a play called.’ ”
