College Football Handicapping: Duke switches defensive schemes

09.02.2011     11:24 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Richmond at Duke -9

Article about Duke's move from a 4-3 to 4-2-5 defense. Coordinator Jim Knowles made a similar switch while head coach at Cornell and saw an immediate improvement. Don't expect huge gains however from the Blue Devils who simply don't have the speed and athleticism to stop teams on a regular basis. We do however consider the move a positive one and should allow for their best athletes to be on the field more. Last year, the stop unit allowed 35.4 ppg and 450 ypg – extreme numbers even by Duke's standard. They'll have a shot to flex their muscle on Saturday against a Richmond team that averaged only 17.1 ppg last season.
