Here’s the quote from Penn State head coach Pat Chambers – he knows what’s coming tonight!
“I know Larry (Krystowiak). I’ve watched his teams. Obviously I’m up late at night so I can throw them on. They are well-coached. They are very skilled. They are very tough. They run a million sets. We’re going to have our hands full.”
I’ve got this game priced near pick ‘em, yet the markets have the Nittany Lions installed in the -4/-4.5 range as I do this write-up on Thursday morning. Why the discrepancy? Simple – the markets have been sluggish adjusting the Utes upwards, despite their significantly improved play down the stretch of the regular season and here in the postseason.
The results do not lie. The Utes are 10-2 SU in their last dozen ballgames despite being favored by more than five points only four times during that span. They’re beating good, confident teams in neutral or hostile environments, including the likes of St Mary’s, Western Kentucky, Arizona State and Washington, among others.
And the Utes have a legitimate matchup edge with pint sized point guard Justin Bibbins, who almost never leaves the floor. Bibbins is a legitimate playmaker who can make something out of nothing late in the shot clock, even against strong defensive foes. Throw in the Utes elite defensive numbers of late – holding their last five foes under 40% shooting – and we should expect a battle, not a blowout. Take the points! Take Utah.
