MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona (Godley) at New York (deGrom) -155 O/U 7
Recommendation: Over

After a promising start, the New York Mets are nearing full-on circus mode with current runs of 6-14 and 3-7. Injuries, trades, drama in the club house...the list goes on. Even one of the few bright spots, tonight's starter, Jacob deGrom, has issues. After a stint on the DL, deGrom returned on Sunday and lasted only an inning due to a high pitch count. He noted following the outing that his stuff and release point just wasn't there. After the arm injury scare, the Mets are obviously taking no chances meaning deGrom will continue to be on a short leash and one of the league's worst bullpens will continue to see plenty of action. Speaking of promising starts, Arizona's Zack Godley started the season with back-to-back gems but has since been repeatedly smacked around. Over his last six starts, Godley has issued 18 walks and sports a 5.57 ERA and .300 BAA. His main issue has been the ineffectiveness of his curveball which is his lone plus pitch. Last season, batters hit .162 BA/.236 SLG against his breaker. Of pitchers who threw 150+ innings last year, only Corey Kluber's curveball rated better. This season, .244/.397 with a 54th ranking among qualified starters. Multiple key bats on the shelf, including Cespedes and Pollock, but difficult trusting both starters with a total that could reach as low as 6.5.

Sports betting in New Jersey will happen but not as soon as everyone would like

05.17.2018     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pump your brakes, bettors. Talk that New Jersey's Monmouth Park will be taking bets within two weeks have since cooled due to the fact that no one knows exactly what rules and regulations will be put in place. To New Jersey's credit, while eager, there appears to be a "let's make sure we get this right" approach in place.

"Operationally, the sportsbook is built out, with just a little bit of additional equipment to be brought in," William Hill U.S. CEO Joe Asher said. "We need to hire and train front-line employees and get our arms wrapped around any regulations that are going to be put in place."

NBA Playoff Betting News: Betting markets expect Cleveland Cavaliers to come out strong for Game 3

05.17.2018     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is interesting. Down 2-0, the Cleveland Cavaliers opened as -5.5 home favorites for Saturday's Game 3. After taking early money, they are now -6.5 both offshore and in Las Vegas. But what's interesting is the first half line. The Cavs are laying -6.5 for the game and as high as -6 (CRIS) for the first half. To compare, Golden State is -7 for the game and -4 in the first half for Sunday's Game 3.

Local bookies don't appear worried about regulated sportsbooks

05.16.2018     09:20 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
But about the local bookie? Most are saying fear not, especially if regulated sportsbooks fail to offer what bettors can get offshore or offscreen with a local bookmakers.

“It’s absolutely ludicrous. Bookies in Philly are probably laughing,” said Brett Smiley, a Penn grad who’s cofounder of SportsHandle, a news site covering the business of sports betting. “I would be shocked if there aren’t conversations happening right now between casino operators and the state to lower that tax.”

“It’s going to be more a thing with the kids who bet $20 a game, that stuff,” Jerry said.

Let the race begin! Corporations are already starting to jockey for position following the Supreme Court’s decision to allow legalized sports betting. Sportsbook giant Paddy Power Betfair is reportedly eyeing the purchase of FanDuel.

Regulations will be key in determining popularity and growth of sports betting

05.16.2018     09:09 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are a slew of different numbers being tossed around with regards to exactly how much profits legalized sports betting will yield. One analyst gave a range of $62 million to $2.9 billion. The key though will be the regulations -- everyone wants to get paid but will there be enough to go around?

"A set of regulations and taxes need to be put into place, and we don't know what those are," Katz said in an interview. "We have seen situations in gaming where regulatory bodies are set up and tax rates are set up that's a structure so onerous that it doesn't benefit the operators to pursue it. The returns aren't good enough. It winds up being a much smaller business than anyone expected."

Las Vegas sportsbooks offer blueprint on how to be successful

05.16.2018     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For states looking to open sportsbooks, the logical blueprint is that of Las Vegas. William Hill is already positioned to operate at Monmouth Park. MGM and Caesars have casinos all across the country. Westgate SuperBook manager Jay Kornegay points out that sportsbooks have a very small margin, meaning in order to turn a profit, they need to be run correctly.

“Most of those that are operating in Las Vegas today are operating in other markets around the country,’’ he said. “I can assure you that those companies are excited about the possibility of bringing their expertise into these other markets as they consider sports betting."

“A Las Vegas sports book works on a very slim margin and its the lowest hold percentage of any casino game offered,’’ he said. “Not to mention it’s very expensive to operate.

“The potential operators out there really need to understand not only how a book operates, but also the financials of a book before they put any kind of legislation together.’’

UPDATE

New Jersey's Monmouth Park is reportedly expected to start taking sports wagers within two weeks. Sportsbook giant William Hill will serve as operator.

"It's my intention, unless somebody stops us, to be up and running in two weeks," Monmouth Park operator Dennis Drazin said during a news conference at the Oceanport track. "If the Legislature or the governor says 'slow down,' I'm gonna listen to them."

Supreme Court will reportedly decide on New Jersey sports betting case this week

04.23.2018     10:08 AM     View Original Blog
Rumor has it the Supreme Court could decide as early as Tuesday on whether or not New Jersey can offer sports betting. If it passes, Monmouth Park, which already has a 300-seat sportsbook, will reportedly be up and running within two weeks.

“This law will jump-start the casino and racing industries, and that will save thousands of jobs,” former state Sen. Ray Lesniak, who spearheaded the initiative over nearly a decade, told The Post.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers

05.15.2018     10:00 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Otto Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Tomlin) at Detroit (Liriano) +125 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Detroit

A month and a half into the season and only two games separate the Cleveland Indians (20-20) and Detroit Tigers (18-22) in the standings. The separation between the two squads will undoubtedly grow as the season progresses but even when we account for projection and overall gap in talent, I have a hard time buying into Josh Tomlin as a -135 road favorite. Tomlin, who sports an 8.06 ERA and even worse 9.69 FIP, hasn't pitched in 10 days. Perhaps his only redeeming quality is that he tossed five scoreless innings against Detroit back on April 10; a game that featured a very pitcher friendly 38 degrees. Yes, the Tigers are without Miguel Cabrera. But without Cabrera, the Tigers have still managed to produced offensively. In 10 games since he hit the DL, Detroit is 5-5 an has averaged 4.4 runs per game. And unlike Tomlin, Francisco Liriano has been rock solid with three runs or less allowed in all seven starts. He's ripe for a little regression (.226 BABIP) but is far more trustworthy than his counterpart for this evening. This matchup should be line at or near a pick 'em which means there's value on the home dog.

Las Vegas' Golden Nugget not taking any action on the Warriors-Rocket series

Billionaire Tilman Fertitta owns the Houston Rockets and also Golden Nugget Casino. Owning stake in a casino and professional sports franchise can be considered an obvious conflict of interest. As a result, the Golden Nugget has decided to pay out any Western Conference futures wagers on the Golden State Warriors. Bettors are also unable to wager on any individual games.

"We've already graded [the Warriors] a winner," Golden Nugget sportsbook manager Aaron Kessler said. "Bring your ticket and you'll get paid."

Mark Cuban sees huge revenue potential from legalized sports betting

05.14.2018     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Add Mark Cuban to the list of folks who think legalized sports betting in the United States is going to be a "cash cow."

"I think everyone who owns a top four professional sports team just basically saw the value of their team double," the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks said in a "Squawk Alley" interview. "It can finally become fun to go to a baseball game again."

"It really comes down to what the states do. How the states handle the implementation and whether or not they work together will determine how all this plays out," Cuban said. "If states are smart, they'll come together and work on a single solution."

Supreme Court votes in favor of legalized sports betting

05.14.2018     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By now you've heard the news: The Supreme Court voted to allow states to offer legalized and regulated sports betting. Props need to be given to the state of New Jersey for sticking with it after years of fending off politicians and various sports leagues. The next step is to sit back and see exactly what regulated sports betting will look like. We've discussed at length that if it is going to stick long term, the product needs to mirror what is available offshore, offscreen, and in Las Vegas. Even your recreational weekend bettor will sniff our poor odds and a limited menu. That won't stop people from playing but if the states want to make this a financially viable entity, they can't be dealing -120 juice or posting games an hour before kickoff. Any offshore or local bookmaker will tell you the best business model is to offer as many betting options as possible, keep a few sharp players around just to balance out the square action, and when CRIS posts openers, copy them a few hours later and let your clientele have at it. Sportsbooks like 5Dimes and BetOnline make their living off of catering to the small-to-medium sized action junky. Want to bet on Bulgarian soccer team totals? We got you covered. MNF side and total for -105 juice? Not a problem. With that being said, we could get a glimpse of what it will look like within a few weeks as New Jersey's Monmouth Park is reportedly ready to start offering games. Stay tuned.

MLB Handicapping: Milwaukee Brewers should be good "over" bet moving forward

05.11.2018     09:28 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the strongest "under" teams in MLB with a 13-23-2 O/U mark. A key component to that figure has been a lack of offense. The Brewers rank 26th in team SLG (.381) and 27th in wRC+ (85). This article makes the argument that the offense as a whole as underachieved and is projected to improve moving forward. On the flip side, the pitching staff has overachieved, with the league's second highest ERA-FIP differential (-0.70). Moving forward, bettors should be looking for opportunities to play the Brewers over the total.

NBA Playoff Betting News: Cleveland Cavaliers priced as series and Game 1 chalk

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Eastern Conference Finals are set with the Boston Celtics (8-4 SU, 9-3 ATS, 8-4 O/U postseason) taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers (8-3 SU, 4-7 ATS, 5-6 O/U). It's a rematch of last year's finals with Cleveland winning 4-1. The Cavaliers opened series -255 series chalk and were bet up to as high as -280 offshore. A handful of Las Vegas sportsbooks are showing -300. The Celtics opened -1.5 home favorites for Game 1 but like the series, the Cavs have taken money. Cleveland is currently -1 road favorites both offshore and in Las Vegas. Game 1's total opened 203 and was bet up to 205 before settling back at 203/203.5.

NBA Playoff Betting News: Houston Game 1 chalk, Golden State series favorite

05.09.2018     11:17 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Unique situation for the upcoming NBA Western Conference Finals. The top seed Houston Rockets have taken money for Monday's Game 1; bet up from an opener of -1.5 to -2. But the Golden State Warriors have seen most of the action from a series price perspective. The Warriors opened as -180 series favorites and were bet up to -190. They opened -170 as Las Vegas' Westgate SuperBook but after a few bets were bumped up to -200.

Regular Season Meetings

1/4: Golden State (-4) 124 at Houston 114, OVER 231

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

05.09.2018     10:02 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Porcello) +125 at New York (Tanaka) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Boston

It’s not often that you will get the Boston Red Sox at this kind of price tag with Rick Porcello on the mound and I feel this is a spot and matchup worthy of taking advantage of this rare opportunity. Porcello has had a fine start to the 2018 season registering a rock solid 2.14 ERA in 6 starts and Boston is 5-1 in those six Porcello starts. He is on a six consecutive quality start streak entering tonight’s game against the Bronx Bombers and current Yankees hitters are collectively batting a paltry .204 average. One of the keys to his success has also been keeping the ball in the yard as Porcello has conceded only 2 home runs in 46.1 innings of work this season. That coincides with his massive jump in groundball rate percentage going from 39.2% last year to 47.6% so far this season along with a drop in his home run to fly ball rate which has gone from 14.7% last season to 4.8% this season. That type of profile in theory should go a long way toward having some success against this Yankees lineup which has feasted on the home run ball for the majority of the season. Masahiro Tanaka will get the starting assignment for the NY Yankees tonight but he’s had some struggles in three previous outings here at Yankee Stadium this season surrendering 11 runs on 16 hits in 18 innings of work pitching at home. Tanaka was crushed by this potent Boston lineup when he saw them back on April 11th at Fenway Park allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and lasting just 5 innings in that game. The New York bullpen has not been the shutdown unit it was expected to be and a lot of their key arms were used in last night’s narrow 3-2 win in the series opener including closer Aroldis Chapman so it’s not the freshest bullpen tonight for the Yankees behind their starter Tanaka. In comparison to Porcello, the home run ball has been more of an issue for Tanaka who has given up 6 home runs in 41 innings pitched this season. New York is on a ridiculous 16-1 tear in their last 17 games and it’s not easy to make a case to bet against them right now—a squad that is red hot and finding ways to win on a nightly basis but the price is right to step in and back the Boston Red Sox at this attractive plus price to cool off the Yanks at least for one night.
