College Football Gambling: Auburn's Johnson questionable for Peach Bowl

12.15.2017     09:44 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn ran the ball nearly 600 times this season which comes out to 46 attempts per game. It's a huge part of the offense and the reason why Jarrett Stidham had the best season of any Tiger quarterback since Cam Newton. But the effectiveness of the run game could be limited due to various injuries. Kamryn Pettway, who rushed for over 1,200 yards last year but was banged up for most of this season, has been ruled out. And workhorse Kerryon Johnson who missed two games and still carried the ball 263 times, is questionable after hurting his shoulder in the SEC Championship. If Johnson is unable to go, the Tigers will turn to Kam Martin who averaged over 6 ypc on 68 attempts. His season-high attempts (14) came in Week 1 vs. Georgia Southern. Auburn is currently a -9.5 favorite over UCF in the Peach Bowl.

College Football Betting Update: SMU announces GA will call plays in Frisco Bowl

12.15.2017     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

Here's your daily "WTF is going on with this Frisco Bowl matchup" nugget. SMU's newly appointed head coach, Sonny Dykes, announced that graduate assistant G.J. Kinne will call plays.

New head coach Sonny Dykes runs an Air Raid offense, not Morris' power-spread attack, so the responsibility of calling plays falls into the hands of Kinne, who worked mostly with the offensive line during his first season at SMU.

Hicks, who is playing a large role in SMU's game-planning for the Frisco Bowl, said that he will have some freedom to make his own decisions at the line of scrimmage while Kinne monitors from above.

"He's going to be upstairs and he's going to try to script most of our plays," Hicks explained. "Then I have range to kind of do what I like to do. But he knows what I want and I know what he wants so we're on the same page."

College Football Betting: Dykes to coach SMU against former team in Frisco Bowl

12.13.2017     10:00 AM     View Original Blog
Well, this is gonna be uncomfortable. Following the departure of Chad Morris to Arkansas, SMU hired former Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes. Dykes, who most recently was an "analyst" for TCU, will reportedly coach the Mustangs in the Frisco Bowl against...Louisiana Tech. And making things even more awkward is that a few current SMU players wanted assistant Jeff Taylor to take over for Morris. Taylor was originally the "interim" but once the school hired Dykes, he bolted to Arkansas with Morris. Not knowing what to make of the situation, bettors literally haven't touched the game with CRIS's Dec. 4 opener of SMU -5 and a total of 70 still pasted across the board offshore.

“We want to continue to build on the success and the blueprint that Chad started. The most important thing we can do is get off to a good start by winning a bowl game,” Dykes said.

College Football Handicapping: Utah's Huntley on track to start vs. West Virginia

12.15.2017     09:23 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When healthy, Utah's Tyler Huntley is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. However, due to his smaller stature (6-1, 190 lbs.) and fearlessness, he's prone to injury. After missing two games midseason, the Utes tried to bring him back slowly and limit the amount of risky plays. But Huntley's rushing attempts ended up increasing each of the next four games. Against Washington, he had a season-high 25 attempts which resulted in him missing the regular season finale due to an "undisclosed injury." Backup Troy Williams was serviceable and so was Huntley at less than 100 percent, but the Utes' offense really hummed when the playbook was open and Huntley was allowed to run wild. According to reports, the sophomore quarterback appears on track to start vs. West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl (Dec. 26). The Utes were bet up from an opener of -4.5 to -7.

“I expect to start in the bowl game. I felt pretty good,” Huntley said. “Today was like the first day of practice, so it felt good to be out there.”

NFL Gambling Alert: Green Bay's Rodgers expected to play vs. Carolina

12.13.2017     10:25 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All signs points toward Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers starting Sunday's game at Carolina. Rodgers hasn't played six Week 6. The Packers were 4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS, and 4-1 O/U with him under center. CRIS line history shows the Panthers opened -2, were bet up to as high as -5.5, and now back down to -3/-2.5. At 7-6, this is really a do-or-die spot for the Packers with 10 wins likely needed in order to get into the playoffs. There are currently seven NFC teams with eight wins or more.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Albany Great Danes at Memphis Tigers

12.12.2017     10:32 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Albany +1 at Mmephis O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Albany

There is a very good reason the Memphis Tigers are only near a pick em in this contest tonight at home against the Albany Great Danes who play out of the America East conference. Albany simply has the more talented and experienced squad. The Great Danes are 10-1 this season including 4-1 on the highway and they return much of the squad that was narrowly defeated by Vermont in last year’s America East conference tournament title game. The team is led by a tremendously talented and experienced backcourt of Joe Cremo and David Nichols who both combine to average over 34 points scored per game. Cremo has an over 50% FG shooting percentage including a sensational 26-of-47 shooting from the perimeter. The team also has a pair of senior forwards in Travis Charles averaging 14.7 points per game and Greig Stire who contributes over 7 points and rebounds per game for Albany. Albany also makes their free throws which is so important in this kind of closely contested game as the Great Danes shoot 75.4% from the FT line as a team. Memphis was able to notch a pair of decent home wins against Northern Kentucky and Mercer (the latter victory in OT) but both games were flawed wins. NKU went ice cold in the second half when they played Memphis and that allowed the Tigers to claw their way back and eventually win that game. In the OT win against Mercer, Memphis only connected on 34% shooting from the field but were the beneficiaries of a ton of trips to the foul line where the Tigers made 30-of-34 free throw attempts at an 88% clip in that game. That has to be considered a bit of an anomaly with the Tigers for the entire season connecting on just 68% from the free throw line. It’s not easy to trust Memphis in this spot either as on deck for the Tigers is a much anticipated trip to New York City this weekend to face the Louisville Cardinals making this a bit of a tricky spot for the home team. For Albany, this is a great chance to notch a solid road win outside of conference and I think the Great Danes are capable of taking advantage of this opportunity and will find a way to win this game on the highway against Memphis.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Mississippi State Bulldogs at Cincinnati Bearcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mississippi State at Cincinnati -11.5 O/U 138
Recommendation: Under

There are only a handful of coaches in the country that you can confidently rely on to have their team ready on the defensive end after a bad performance. Cincinnati's Mick Cronin certainly qualifies. Two weeks ago, the Bearcats were punched in the mouth by rival Xavier, 89-76. They fired back by holding Florida to only 66 but lost the game thanks to 21 turnovers. Off back-to-back losses, bettors can expect a focused effort against Mississippi State tonight. The Bulldogs (8-0) are one of only a few undefeated teams remaining due in large part to an ultra-soft schedule. When asked to step up in class, MSU barely slipped past Jacksonville State (59-56) and Dayton (61-59) in Starkville. You'll notice that in both contests, the Bulldogs struggled to score which suggests points could be at a premium tonight. I used Florida as an example the other day as a defensive-minded team that fell in love with simply outscoring weaker foes. Cincinnati has had a similar experience after hanging 107, 102, and 97 its first three games. But the Bearcats are notorious slowing down the pace and grinding out games once the competition level toughens. We saw it against Florida with only 128 points on 68 possessions. Unfortunately, that total was as high as 148. Here we see a 10-point adjustment. Still, with the home side sitting on a strong defensive showing and the road team facing a massive step up in class, this projects to be a 73-58 type game.

College Football Gambling: Washington State dismissed top two receivers

12.11.2017     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
'Tis also the season for bowl games suspensions. Washington State will be without its two top receivers with Tavares Martin and Isaiah Johnson-Mack dismissed from the team. The due combined for 130 catches, 1,386 yards, and 14 touchdowns. The Cougars are currently -3 favorites vs. Michigan State in the Holiday Bowl (Dec. 28).

“There’s 120 people out there and over almost 30 years, am I surprised people make screwy decisions? No,” Leach said. “You don’t always know where it’s going to land, but it happens all the time. We’re far more concerned about the people here than the ones that aren’t, and I think you ought to be, too.”

College Football Betting: Michigan State doesn't sound giddy about its Holiday Bowl berth

12.11.2017     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
‘Tis the season to be miffed about what crappy bowl game you'll be playing in. The Holiday Bowl is generally thought of as "semi-decent" but Michigan State had its sights set on a trip to Florida. And if you read between the lines, it isn't so much the Spartans are playing a top 25 team in San Diego as much as it is getting passed over by rival Michigan. MSU finished 9-3 and 7-2 in Big Ten play. UM finished 8-4 and 5-4 in Big Ten play AND lost to Sparty straight up. The Wolverines get to play on New Year's in the Outback Bowl while the Spartans play on Dec. 28 against Washington State. Plenty of time to "recover" but we've seen teams fail to show up in the postseason for far less circumstances.

"I just look at it as an opportunity to play in the Holiday Bowl right now," Dantonio said. "The records are what they are. I’ll just continue to concentrate on beating Michigan and let things sort of sort out."

"Life’s about how you handle disappointments," Dantonio said. "I would not say going to the Holiday Bowl is a big disappointment. I’m excited about it. Very excited about the opportunity, so that’s where we’re going to play."

NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oakland Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs

12.10.2017     07:07 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland at Kansas City
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: Kansas City -4.5 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Kansas City -4 O/U 48
Recommendation: Over

The first meeting between these two teams was a legitimate shootout, a 31-30 Raiders victory that flew Over the total by two touchdowns. Even before the late penalty shenanigans that allowed Oakland to steal the game with an untimed down on their final play, the Over was never in doubt. The two teams combined to gain a full 7.0 yards per play, and the two defenses generated a grand total of one sack and zero turnovers in 133 total snaps.

We can expect both defenses to struggle getting stops in the rematch as well. Based on Football Outsiders advanced metrics, the Raiders defense ranks #32 in the NFL; the Chiefs #30, with both teams well below league average against the run and the pass.

KC’s defense is a sieve right now, coming off a truly dismal showing against the Jets last week – zero sacks, zero turnovers forced in 85 snaps. They allowed 38 points, 30 first downs and total 488 yards, all season highs. In fact, Bob Sutton’s stop unit has only forced one turnover in their last four games combined, not exactly a defense loaded with playmakers right now. This week, KC won’t have pro bowl cornerback Marcus Peters (suspended), offsetting the probable absence of Raiders WR Amari Cooper (ankle). Even with Darrelle Revis in the mix, this is NOT a good pass defense right now, bad news against Derek Carr and company.

And even without Amari Cooper, the Raiders offense will get a boost with the return of Michael Crabtree from his one game suspension. Offensive coordinator Todd Downing: “It's great having him back out at practice. He brings an energy and brings a personality that kind of gets guys going a little bit and makes it fun to be out there. It's certainly awesome to have his talent back.”

The Raiders defense is every bit as bad, a squad with a grand total of ONE interception all season, and even that was lucky – Navarro Bowman made the pick while laying on the ground in the end zone; the ball tipped right to him. And that pick came against Paxton Lynch, so they have zero INTs against anything resembling a decent quarterback this season, remarkable for a Week 14 matchup. Both teams rank in the bottom quartile of the NFL in sack percentage, which means that both Derek Carr and Alex Smith should have some clean pockets to throw from. On a beautiful sunny December afternoon at Arrowhead, we should expect a shootout.

NFL Betting News: McAdoo out, Manning back, Giants taking money

12.08.2017     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has gotta be worth a few points, no? The New York Giants fired head coach Ben McAdoo -- that's a good thing. They also reinstated Eli Manning as the starting quarterback -- probably a good thing considering Geno Smith is the back up. And one could argue it's the G-Men's "Super Bowl" on Sunday with a home game against rival Dallas. The market says it's worth 2.5 points with the Cowboys bet down from -6 to -3.5 road chalk.

“It’s important to play,” Manning said during his weekly meeting with reporters. “That’s what I love to do. I love to play quarterback. I love playing quarterback for the New York Giants. That’s what I work on. Last week something different was asked of me. I tried to do to the best of my abilities helping Geno and being the backup. But if I knew, I’d want the opportunity to be the starting quarterback again.”

NFL Gambling: Detroit's Stafford and Buffalo's Taylor remain questionable for Sunday

12.08.2017     09:00 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As of Friday morning, there are two NFL games with no lines or totals. Detroit's game at Tampa Bay is off the board because Matthew Stafford (right hand) is questionable. Stafford hasn't missed a game since 2011. And Buffalo's Tyrod Taylor (knee) is questionable for the Bills' matchup vs. Indianapolis. Assuming both play, power ratings show Detroit-Tampa Bay to be around a pick 'em while Buffalo should come around -7.

College Football Gambling: Bettors should be aware of coaching changes for bowl teams

12.07.2017     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's obviously been a lot of coaching movement since the end of the regular season. Below we've got the details on who is expected to coach those teams playing in the postseason.

UCF - Scott Frost is headed to Nebraska but reports say he and his staff will stick around for the Peach Bowl (Jan. 1).

Missouri - Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel was hired to replace Frost. He won't have anything to do with UCF's bowl preparation and there is still no word on whether or not he'll call plays for Missouri's Texas Bowl (Dec. 27) matchup vs. Texas.

Oregon - Offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal will serve as interim head coach following the departure of Willie Taggart. The Ducks play Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 16).

UCLA - With Jim Mora fire, offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch will serve as interim head coach. The Bruins face Kansas State in the Cactus Bowl (Dec. 26).

Mississippi State - After Dan Mullen bolted for Florida, the Bulldogs snagged Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. Moorehead won't be involved however in MSU's prep for the Tayslayer Bowl (Dec. 30 vs. Louisville). Running backs coach Greg Knox was named interim head coach.

Texas A&M - Special teams coordinator Jeff Banks will take over for Kevin Sumlin. The Aggies play Wake Forest in the Belk Bowl (Dec. 29).

Arizona State - Newly hired head coach Herm Edwards (LOL!) announced that he is keeping the entire offensive staff. The Sun Devils play NC State in the Sun Bowl (Dec. 29).

Florida State - D-line coach Odell Haggins coached the Seminoles in the regular season finale and will do so for their Independence Bowl (Dec. 27) matchup vs. Southern Miss.

Penn State - Newly promoted offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne will call plays for the Nittany Lions in the Fiesta Bowl (Dec. 30 vs. Washington).

SMU - Chad Morris is headed to Arkansas leaving running backs coach Jeff Taylor in charge of the team's Frisco Bowl (Dec. 20) matchup vs. Louisiana Tech

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Loyola-Chicago Ramblers at Florida Gators

Loyola-Chicago at Florida -16.5 O/U 151
Recommendation: Under

After running up and down the floor and hanging 100+ three out of its four games, Florida finds itself losers of two straight. The main culprit was defense as Duke and Florida State netted 1.13 and 1.12 points per possession, respectively. And despite winning, Florida's two opponents prior to that, Stanford and Gonzaga, also posted 1.1 ppp or more. Not having John Egbunu patrolling the paint hurts, but he missed time last year and the Gators still finished fifth in the country in defensive efficiency. The bottom line is Florida fell in love with trying to outscore foes and head coach Mike White was quick to call them on it.

“You guys have heard me use the word soft with this team,” White said late Monday night. “And we use the word with our team every day and it reared its ugly head tonight. Tonight was the epitome of soft.”

Ironically, nearly the exact same thing occurred last season when the Gators dropped two straight to both Duke and Florida State. The key however was they were able to fire back in a big way the next time out with an 87-46 win over Charlotte.

Tonight's opponent, Loyola-Chicago, offers a good chance for a strong defensive showing. The Ramblers have posted some solid offensive numbers but a closer look shows they have been feasting on the weak with an opponents' offensive and defensive strength of schedule below 300. In their lone step-up-in-class, they were manhandled at Boise State, 87-53. Note too that under Porter Moser, Loyola has ranked in the bottom quarter nationally in pace. It's doubtful they'll want to trade baskets in this environment. Number creeping down but still a little value to look under the total.
