CFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saskatchewan +7.5 at Montreal O/U 51
Recommendation: Saskatchewan

Now that +7’s and even a handful of +7.5’s have become available, I think a bet on Saskatchewan is warranted in tonight’s CFL season opener between the Roughriders and Alouettes. Saskatchewan was tied with Toronto for the worst record in the CFL last season at 5-13 but in spite of that, they still managed a respectable 9-9 ATS mark. Saskatchewan’s training camp and preseason was a whole lot of ugly with Vince Young suffering a torn hamstring which ended his CFL comeback before it could even begin. As a whole, the Roughriders’ starting offense and defense both took turns struggling to perform at a high level.

Saskatchewan has a new starting quarterback with the veteran Kevin Glenn at the controls after the trade of Darian Durant who is now with Montreal. The Riders do have a good amount of talent at the skill positions and their offensive line should be better but the defense was abysmal last season and didn’t exactly play all that well in their two preseason games. Having said all that, I’m not sure there is anything about the Montreal Alouettes, who are coming off their own turmoil filled and mediocre season, that warrants this type of pointspread. Durant is definitely an upgrade at the position but this team improved its offense potentially at the expense of their defense which has been a rock solid stop unit in recent years. Montreal had to cut loose a bunch of their defensive personnel in the offseason as they said goodbye to linebackers Winston Venable and Bear Woods, defensive linemen Aaron Lavarious and Alan-Michael Cash and safety Marc-Olivier Brouillette. And while they still have veterans John Bowman and Chip Cox, there is a chance the Alouettes defense could take a step back in 2017 especially since Bowman and Cox are now well into their 30’s and may decline. I understand the reluctance to back Saskatchewan but Montreal has plenty of question marks of its own. Given the West Division’s dominance over the East last season, I think taking the points with the Riders here is a worthy wager.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Miami Marlins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Arrieta) -130 at Miami (Locke) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Miami’s Jeff Locke remains a fringe National League arm; capable of popping for the occasional strong start but very hittable otherwise. He allowed 1 run and fanned seven in his first outing of the year against Arizona but has since failed to record a quality start (3 starts, 14 IP, 5.79 ERA). One of those opponents was the Cubs who patiently picked him apart in a 10-2 victory (4.2 IP, 4 BB, 3 ER). Locke's "metrics" (3.54 FIP) indicate he's pitched better than his 4.58 ERA, but considering the offensive boom MLB is currently enjoying, that ERA is likely who he'll really be over a larger sample size.

Chicago’s Jake Arrieta has been consistently mediocre this season. On May 3, Arrieta's ERA sat at 4.63. A month and a half later, it's 4.64. Virtually every metric has regressed including groundball rate than is nearly 10% lower than last season. Yes, the strikeouts are there (9.9 K's per 9) but without a top-tier defense and more balls hit in the air (that thus leave the yard), the reality is Arrieta is an average NL starter. His last start vs. Pittsburgh was a perfect example of who he is: 4.2 IP, 94 pitches, 7 Ks, 2 ERs. He labored throughout and was fortunate as Gregory Polanco, who hit a laser beam homer earlier in the game, just missed another by less than a foot.

Right in line with most of MLB, Marlins Stadium is 20-14-1 O/U this season including 7-4-2 O/U with totals of 9 or higher. In fact, across MLB, games totaled 9 or higher have gone over nearly 59% of the time. Would look that way tonight with two very hittable starters on the hill.

Soccer player says pretty much everyone loves to bet

06.21.2017     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly

Currently banned soccer player Joey Barton claims that gambling among players is way more prevalent than people think.

“Oh yeah there are players in every dressing room. One thing footballers have in common is they love betting. Because they’re competitors,” he said.

“It happens on a huge scale. Are the FA going to investigate? No, because if they do they’re going to have to give all these players 18 months.

“I was an outlier on volume [of bets] but there’ll be outliers on wagers staked. I’ve been in dressing rooms with players, where they’ve a hundred grand staked on mad stuff. On one bet. Scary. A lot bet massive figures.”

NFL Gambling News: League reaches settlement with Las Vegas charity event

06.21.2017     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL has a long history of getting pissy any time its name get associated with a casino. Back in 2015, a kids charity event was put together with various players in attendance. The venue happen to be the bowling alley at Las Vegas' Sunset Station. The NFL nixed it but the charity wasn't about to be bullied and turned right around and sued the league. It looks as if the NFL waved the white flag as it recently reached a settlement with the charity.

“There's only one person that can tell us what's the difference between the non-approved venue and the approved venue (Goodell),” Pettit told a federal magistrate judge last month. “And he's this Oz behind the curtain, this person that the NFL will not allow us to talk to. And everyone points their finger at him, saying he's the only one that can make that determination.”

The Federal Trade Commission is trying to stop a potential merger between Daily Fantasy Sports giants DraftKings and FanDuel. The reason is simple: They would then control as much as 90 percent of the market.

"It all comes down to how you define the relevant market, and that's where they fell short," Daniel Wallach, a Florida attorney who specializes in gambling and sports law, said of the two companies. "And I'm not convinced they'll do any better in a federal court."

Gambling Update: Numbers of bets continue to pile up on McGregor

06.20.2017     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UPDATE

The betting markets continue to work over the much anticipated (and likely boring) Mayweather-McGregor bout slated for August 26. Offshore, Mayweather opened -1000 at CRIS and -950 at Pinnacle. But money on McGregor has the current line around -700. You can get as cheap as -600 on Mayweather at Las Vegas' Golden Nugget. If you like McGregor, +500ish is widely available. Money has also come in on the under in terms of the length of the fight. After opening 9.5 the market has since shifted to 9.5un-165. Interestingly, 90 percent of the bets made at Las Vegas' Westgate have come on McGregor but nearly 80% of the money is on Mayweather.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if this price goes lower,” Westgate sports book manager Jeff Sherman said. “We’re still taking bets on McGregor at 5-1.”

“It’s been all McGregor. It’s unbelievable,” Caesars Palace sports book director Frank Kunovic said. “All the square action is going on McGregor. That’s a big liability for us if he does win.

“This is building up to be just as big, if not bigger, than the Mayweather-(Manny) Pacquiao fight.”

Early two-way betting action on Mayweather-McGregor fight

So this thing is actually going to happen. According to Pinnacle's line history, early money came in on Conor McGregor. He opened +648 and was bet down to +529. Then a wave of Floyd Mayweather money drove the line the other way. The 12-round fight is scheduled for August 26 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena. Those shops offering an O/U on total rounds currently show 9.5 with juice to the over.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies

St. Louis (Leake) -160 at Philadelphia (Hellickson) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: St. Louis/Over

Currently ranked among the top 10 qualified starter with a negative ERA-FIP differential (4.91 ERA-5.91 FIP), Philadelphia's Jeremy Hellickson is no doubt fortunate his ERA isn't higher. Like his counterpart tonight, Mike Leake, Hellickson pitched out of his mind the first part of the season (5 starts, 1.80 ERA) but has come crashing down with a near 7.00 ERA over his last nine starts. During that span of 47 innings, the veteran righty has a 23-20 K-to-BB ratio while allowing 13 home runs. He's currently as bad a starter as there is in the National League. Speaking of regression, after posting a sub-2.00 ERA through his first nine starts, Leake has seen his ERA rise well over a run thanks to a 6.20 ERA (24.2 IP, 17 ERs). His overall performance this season, however, is far more "real" than that of Hellickson. Leake currently owns career bests in both groundball rate (54.9%) and swinging strike rate (8.2%). Not to mention that stretch of regression came against four of the NL's better offenses (Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, Brewers). Here he faces a big step down in class with the Phillies near the bottom of MLB in most offensive categories. A lot of the value with both St. Louis (-140 to -160) and total (9 to 9.5) was taken out early but those remain the prefered ways to play this contest.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

06.15.2017     01:19 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco (Moore) at Colorado (Hoffman) O/U 11
Recommendation: Colorado -1.5

Jeff Hoffman has been one of the many positive stories from an unexpectedly solid Colorado Rockies pitching staff that has led the team to a 42-26 record. Hoffman sports a 2.33 ERA over four starts; all them Colorado wins by two runs or more. Along with the stellar ERA is a 0.74 WHIP, 34 strikeouts, and only three walks. The San Francisco Giants have endured a dismal season that is now 17 games below .500 after yesterday's 7-2 loss to Kansas City. The always problematic lefty Matt Moore takes the mound tonight in what can only be considered a precarious situation. Moore has surrendered nine runs in his last 10 innings of work and he’s been at his worst on the highway with a 7.94 ERA. Not surprisingly, the Giants are just 1-6 in Moore’s seven road starts. Moore’s track record at Coors Field is equally unimpressive has he allowed 12 runs in his previous two starts. The Colorado bullpen has been terrific all season and has the arms to preserve a lead in the latter innings. The moneyline price is a tad rich but it’s worth noting that 33 of Colorado’s 42 wins have been margins of two runs or more. Good spot to step in a lay the -1.5 at the small plus price with the superior home team.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Johnson) -125 at Philadelphia (Hellickson) O/U 10
Recommendation: Boston

Despite being 21-42 as a team, the Philadelphia Phillies are 9-4 when Jeremy Hellickson toes the rubber. Hellickson started the season strong (1.80 ERA first five starts) but has been exposed in a big way of late. Over his last eight outings, Hellickson has been pounded to the tune of a 6.43 ERA and 12 home runs allowed. He also sports an alarming 22/17 K-to-BB ratio. He's simply not fooling anyone and is tasked with facing an above average American League lineup tonight.

Boston is priced rather cheaply tonight because unproven rookie Brian Johnson is on the bump. Johnson, a former first round pick, has been serviceable with a 3.44 ERA and 16/4 K-to-BB ratio in three starts. And his Minor League stats (2.61 ERA over 471 IP), suggest he'll be able to get MLB hitters out at a decent rate. My issue with Johnson is that he's not a big swing-and-miss arm and tends to give up a lot of fly balls. That's not ideal tossing in Fenway against the American League but in this spot, even in a hitter friendly park, he has a good chance to post a quality start.

The AL is 74-51 in Interleague play good for over +21 units. Here we get one of the better teams in MLB facing one of the worst with a price that is more than reasonable. The Phillies have virtually no edges in this matchup which makes it easy to support the road side.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Los Angeles (McCarthy) +140 at Cleveland (Kluber) O/U 8
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Cleveland Indians host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Progressive Field. Corey Kluber takes the hill for the Tribe; his ninth start of the year and third since being activated from the DL. Last time out, Kluber went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts against the White Sox. It was a very favorable matchup and the second time this season Kluber rolled through Chicago's lineup. In fact, if you eliminate Kluber's two outings against the White Sox, his ERA is an alarming 5.50 over seven starts.

Brandon McCarthy doesn't always get the respect he deserves because he's so injury prone. But when healthy, his stuff grades out as well above average. Note that his average exit velocity against, according to Statcast, is 84.4 mph. That ranks seventh-best out of 146 starters with at least 100 balls put in play. McCarthy has been throwing a cutter at a much higher rate this year which has significantly helped his ability to tame left-handed bats.

Cleveland is one of the most over-priced teams in MLB at nearly -15 units despite being a game over .500. Yes, the American League continues to dominate Interleague play, but this particular matchup is far more even than the price suggests. At +140, the Dodgers offer lots of value.

A bunch of guys got together and talked about legalized sports betting. The outcome wasn't very exciting.

"I think what the unions are trying to do now, wisely, is learn everything they can learn [about regulated sports betting]," Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association, said on a Monday press call to announce the formation of the American Sports Betting Coalition.

"I can tell you from the questions they asked us, they were good questions," Freeman said. "They're thoughtful on this. They're going to be a key stakeholder on how this plays out."

Oh, New Jersey. You mean well but remain so naive. Here were have Chris Christie saying betting on the NFL will be a go by 2018. They said the same thing back in 2013 when the Garden State hosted Super Bowl XLVIII.

"They pick and choose," the New Jersey governor said. "For instance, the Obama administration said it was OK to legalize recreational marijuana even though marijuana is still illegal on federal level, but the Obama administration said 'No' on gambling."

So they don't want to turn the negotiations of the potential (probable?) Mayweather-McGregor "fight" into a "circus." Isn't that the whole point of putting this fight together? Create as much of a circus-like environment as possible so no one pays attention to just how shitty the actual fight is going to be.

"There are negotiations ongoing, but none of us wants to turn this into the circus that the Mayweather-[Manny] Pacquiao negotiations were, so I think it's best if we keep all the business discussions private until the deal is done," Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza told ESPN on Monday night.

MLB Handicapping: League-wide home run rate continues to climb

06.13.2017     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Look across the MLB slate for today. What do you notice? For starters, only one game -- in San Francisco -- is lined below 8. Three games are lined 10 or higher and Colorado and Arizona are on the road. Marcus Stroman is hitting opposite field bombs. Justin Smoak is closing in on his career high in dingers...through 62 games. Last night, Nick Markakis, who has previously hit one home run, took Stephen Strasburg deep to the opposite field. Seriously, what the hell is going on? We know what's going on: MLB did something to the baseball and it's resulted in an incredible rise in home run rate. Surprisingly, "overs" have only hit at around 52.5% -- but that number is obviously skewed some as a majority of totals over the last month plus have been bet and thus closed higher. One would think we're approaching a tipping point but the weather is only going to get warmer meaning balls will be flying even further over the next three months.

Baseball is on its 15th consecutive regular-season month with a higher home-run rate on contact than the previous season’s equivalent month. Homers this April were up 12% over last April, which were up 18% over the previous April. Homers this May were up 12% over last May. Homers so far in June are up 10% over last June. Where we are now, 5.12% of fair batted balls in June have been homers. It’s the first time baseball’s broken the 5% threshold.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Freeland) +123 at Pittsburgh (Taillon) O/U 9
Recommendation: Colorado

Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon will be back on the hill tonight in what’s likely to be a more emotional moment than your ordinary return from the DL. Early money is showing strong support for Pittsburgh’s prized righty has soared from a -119 opener to -132. Taillon has said that he is 100% mentally and physically heading into this start and he claims to be as sharp as he’s been all year. He stretched out to 97 pitches over six innings in his final rehab start last Wednesday so it appears as if all systems are go. Colorado rookie Kyle Freeland has successfully pitched to contact thus far. Freeland’s 49 strikeouts in 76 innings are underwhelming but his 127 ground ball outs and 57.5% ground ball rate have propelled him. There are some peripherals that suggest season long success isn’t likely sustainable but he’s been pretty economical to this point averaging six innings and 15.5 pitches per inning. Nine of his past 10 starts have been quality by definition.

It’s pretty easy to find indicators that show Freeland is heading for a decline but that may not begin here. Pittsburgh’s offense has been miserable all season and its 25th-ranked team OPS seems like the type that can be frustrated by Freeland, especially in their first time seeing him. Taillon, on the other hand has the dominant stuff which could be effective even against a lineup as potent as the Rockies. Colorado remains hot heading into tonight’s series opener having hit .289 last week with a .375 on base percentage and .841 OPS. Figure the Colorado bullpen which has been sensational and has their top three arms rested and available tonight (Holland, McGee and Ottavino) can be a difference maker along with the relentless Rockies lineup. Meanwhile, the Pirates recent demotion of closer Tony Watson hurts their pen as does the back-back days worked by their best late inning relievers Felipe Rivero and Juan Nicasio. There are enough advantages here that signal the underdog price with the Rockies is worth a look.
