Virginia Tech is one of a handful of teams that feature a first-year head coach implementing a completely different offensive system. Justin Fuente's plan is for the Hokies to play up-tempo. At no point during former head coach Frank Beamer's tenure did the offense stray from being “conventional.” Some of VT's players hinted that the change is significant and something that will likely
to adjust to.
“Last year I was playing maybe 70-80 plays a game,” Phillips said, “and in this system, with the things we like to do now, that’s very, very difficult. You could call it unhealthy if you want.”
“I like the faster pace a lot,” Hodges said. “It creates a lot of mismatches. … The tempo is very different from previous years. The play-calling, the play design, are things I haven’t seen.”
