Football Handicapping: Bye Week Breakdown

10.26.2010     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here is a breakdown of every college and pro football team that enter this week off of a bye.

College
Florida (+3 vs. Georgia) – Gators get a much need bye week after two straight losses. Urban Meyer is 11-1 SU at Florida off a bye (18-2 overall as a head coach). Georgia has won three straight over Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs don’t have a bye week until mid-November.

Michigan (-2.5 at Penn State) – Both teams sit 1-2 in Big Ten play. Michigan is 2-9 SU, 3-8 ATS on the road under Rich Rodriguez.

Florida State (-3.5 at NC State) – Thursday game. Seminoles play just one more regular season road game (at Maryland 11/20).

Wake Forest (+5.5 at Maryland) – Demon Deacons have allowed 35 touchdowns in seven games. Three of Maryland’s five wins came by 3, 3 and 5.

NC State (+3.5 vs. Florida State) – Thursday game. Quarterback Russell Wilson has thrown eight interceptions over the past three games. Prior to that, he had just one in the Wolfpack’s first four contests.

USC (+7 vs. Oregon) – In USC’s first seven games last year, the defense allowed a total of 559 yards rushing. Against Oregon, the Trojans surrendered 391 as the Ducks crushed in Eugene, 47-20.

Oregon State (-2.5 vs. California) – Oregon State head coach Mike Riley is 14-5 SU off a bye week as a head coach. The Beavers have won three straight in the series.

UNLV (+35 vs. TCU) – Horned Frogs were sluggish last time they played on the highway with a 27-0 win at Colorado State. TCU plays at No. 8 Utah next week.

Tulsa (+8 at Notre Dame) – Fighting Irish are 0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS off their last three losses to Navy.

Southern Miss (-10 vs. UAB) – After USM won 70-14 over UAB in 2008, the Blazers exacted revenge with a 30-17 win in Birmingham last season. "I have not met with the team yet or talked to them about the UAB game from last year, but I am sure that game is probably stuck in their craw," Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said. "It is hard to get that one out of your throat. It will be something that will be addressed."

Memphis (+13 vs. Houston) – Tigers have been non-competitive over their last three games; outscored 145-26. Houston off big win over SMU. Cougars on top of the West Division standings.

Nevada (-26.5 vs. Utah State) – Wolf Pack had a week to digest first loss of the season to Hawaii.

Troy (-16.5 at UL-Monroe) – Three of Troy’s four win have come by a touchdown or less. Trojans are 0-4 ATS as a favorite this season.

North Texas (+4.5 at Western Kentucky) – North Texas fired head coach Todd Dodge during the bye week. Western Kentucky is off its first win over an FBS team (UL-Lafayette) since making the jump from FCS in 2008.

Florida International (-5.5 at Florida Atlantic) – The tide has shifted as FIU is now the better of the two programs. The Panthers however have lost four straight in the series and need this win to keep pace with Trojan in the Sun Belt standings.

Pro
NY Jets
(-6 vs. Green Bay) – Jets have covered seven of their last eight games off a bye week.

Detroit (-2.5 vs. Washington) – Quarterback Matthew Stafford listed as probable. Last year, Detroit’s win over the Redskins snapped a 19-game losing streak.

Houston (+5 at Indianapolis) – Texans have covered nine of their last 11 games as a road underdog.

Indianapolis (-5 vs. Houston) – Week 1’s loss to Houston snapped a six-game winning streak in the series.
