Interview with Titanic Thompson author Kevin Cook

12.20.2010     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

Here is a cool interview with Kevin Cook, author of Titanic Thompson. I'm (Andrew Lange) about 50 pages into the book and have found it to be really interesting read. Outside of Thompson's history as a cheat, a lot is discussed about his ability at a young age to read people and understand the mathematics involved in being a successful poker player. Highly recommended for those who enjoy stories on gambling.

Books on Gambling: Titanic Thompson

There is nothing better than a good book on gambling. Former Sports Illustrated editor Kevin Cook just published Titanic Thompson, the story of famous gambler/hustler Alvin Thomas. There are some wild stories involving Thomas scamming Al Capone and Arnold Rothstein while beating both Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson at golf. You can read a small preview and an excerpt from the book right here.

Professional gamblers still talk about Titanic Thompson. They say that he threw a watermelon over a three-story building, that he pulled Capone's pants down, that he beat Ben Hogan playing golf right-handed and then turned around and beat Byron Nelson left-handed, that he survived the sinking of the Titanic by sneaking into a lifeboat dressed as a woman.
