Legalized sports betting will happen, just not any time soon

09.02.2016     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
We talk a lot in the Sportsmemo Blog about the ongoing saga of legalized sports betting. There have been times where it seemed "inevitable" or a "matter of months" yet here we are, the start of a new football season and zero progress. Hell, Daily Fantasy Sports was on life support and has already made an Ali-like return over the span of a calendar year. Meanwhile, sports betting is no closer to being legalized than it was when we first blogged about it back in early 2010. Over at Deadspin there's an incredibly well written article on the current situation and what it will really take to make sports betting nationwide a reality. Go read it before your brain gets fried from watching 45 college football games on Saturday.

All it will take is just one successful court challenge to create this domino effect. But it requires continued persistence by the true stakeholders in this constitutional battle: not the sports leagues or the casinos, but the states themselves.
