MLB Betting Update: Clearly not right, Cubs give Samardzija another start

07.02.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Chicago Cubs (Samardzija) at Atlanta (Hanson) -190 O/U 8

For whatever reason, the Chicago Cubs will continue to roll the dice with Jeff Samardzija who is clearly wearing down in his first season as a full-time MLB starter. Samardzija has already matched last year's inning total and is just over 50 away from hitting his professional career high (141.2 in 2007). In the span of just over a month, Samardzija's ERA has jumped from 3.00 to 5.05. His stat line from his last four starts: 18.1 IP, 25 ER, 14 Ks, 10 BBs, 4 HRs, 12.27 ERA, 1.033 OPS. And if that weren't bad enough, manager Dale Sveum was quoted as saying, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned a little bit with the numbers and execution of pitches." Yet rather than rest all Samardzija needed to say was, “It’s more mental than physical for me right now. My body feels great." Umm, if that were the case Jeff, then why has your velocity dropped considerably over your last two starts?

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Samardzija showing signs of wearing down

06.25.2012     07:57 AM     View Original Blog
We'll be keeping a close eye of Chicago's Jeff Samardzija over the next few weeks. His last four outings have lasted only 5, 3.2, 5.1 and 5 innings respectively. During that span, his ERA was 8.53 – though perhaps a tad unlucky with a .410 BABIP. Chicago claims everything is fine but with little to play for, the Cubs can ill-afford to damage one of their few prized possessions. Samardzija is slated to start Wednesday vs. New York.

‘‘One thing that we’ve done with Jeff more so than anybody — and maybe it’s something we also have to look at — is he’s not been able to stay on that five-day rotation because we’re trying to watch pitches,’’ Bosio said. ‘‘And maybe that is a disservice to him. There’s a lot to be said for staying on a regular routine. But when you’re talking about a special talent like Jeff, it’s hard to have it both ways. Do I see a pattern? No. I see a guy, along with the rest of the guys on the starting staff, having challenging nights every time they go out there, which is major-league baseball.’’

Samardzija's Year-by-Year Innings (includes Minors)
2006: 7 starts, 30 IP
2007: 26 starts, 141.2 IP
2008: 21 starts, 141 IP
2009: 19 starts, 123.2 IP
2010: 18 starts, 130.2 IP
2011: 0 starts, 88 IP
2012: 14 starts, 83 IP
