Oakland (Colon) +105 at Colorado (Guthrie) O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Oakland
Colorado (24-35) is just 15-18 at Coors Field this season and winless in its last seven Interleague home games. They once dominated these Interleague games on their home turf in the light air going 45-19. But tough times have hit the Rockies as they have lost five straight games and boast MLB’s worst pitching with a 5.31 ERA and .297 batting average against (BAA).
I don’t back favorites with very poor pitching while they struggle to score and win. The Rockies continue to play without star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and despite 8 runs scored Sunday, they scored just 2, 1, 0, 4, 3 and 2 runs in six of their previous seven games. Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie is downright awful this season with poor skill sets and stats. He’s been very hittable with a .324 BAA and 69 hits allowed in 51 innings. He’s also allowed 12 home runs with just 23 strikeouts. Oh, and his ERA is 6.35 including 8.87 at Coors Field against some softer opponents and lineups (.363 BAA).
Bartolo Colon is nothing special but he’s pitched pretty well for the A’s with a 3.92 ERA with 49 Ks and 13 BB in 82 innings. He comes off eight shutout innings of 5-hit ball in beating the Rangers; the Majors’ top hitting team. He also has a 2.49 ERA in seven road starts away from his pitcher friendly home park in Oakland. Colon is also susceptible to the long ball which makes early scoring a definite possibility against these two starters. But the A’s bullpen is superior with a 2.91 ERA and .202 BAA, and the A’s get our support with Colorado clearly a poor favorite with Guthrie on the hill.
