Minnesota at Pittsburgh
Recommendation: Minnesota -110 1st 5 innings
Ivan Nova's statline from his first start looks solid (5 IP, 4 Ks, 2 ER vs. Detroit) but he was very fortunate not to be knocked out of the game. One two different occasions, Detroit had the bases loaded with no one out and failed to score a run. And Nova, who walked one batter his first six starts of last season, issues three free passes, something he attributed to the cold weather and difficulty gripping the baseball. Temperatures tonight are expected to be around freezing. Jake Odorizzi looked strong in his Minnesota debut; 6 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 7 Ks at Baltimore. He was one of many middle-tier starters that suffered from the recent league-wide spike in home runs (59 allowed L2 seasons). But he's only 28 and getting out of the AL East will likely prolong his career. And in this situation, he's a far cry from pitching against the Red Sox or Yankees; a very favorable cold weather start against an average offense in a National League park. Will look to support the Twins on the 5-inning line.
