MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (deGrom) -145 at Philadelphia (Eickhoff) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Medium winds (10-15 mph) blowing out tonight in Citizen’s Bank Park but not sure the offenses will be helped enough by that. Starting pitching figures to dominate this contest the same way they’ve dominated in this matchup almost every time the past couple of seasons. For the Mets, Jacob deGrom has thrown four gems in his last five outings against the Phillies totaling 28.2 IP and resulting in a 0.84 WHIP and 0.94 ERA. deGrom posted a 5:1 (25-5) K:BB ratio in those four games and allowed no home runs. There was one clunker back in 2015 when he did not make it through the third inning but the majority of his work against Philadelphia has been brilliant. He has held this current Phillies roster to a weak set of offensive numbers including .190 BA, .227 OBP, .238 SLG%, .465 OPS.  His solid season opening start against Atlanta (6 IP, 2 hits, 6 Ks, 1 BB, and 0 runs), indicates he’s in excellent early form.

For the Phils, Jared Eickhoff has turned into a model of solid consistency allowing three runs or fewer in each of his last nine starts and in 32 of his last 38. He too got off to a strong start by opening the season with a 6.2 inning performance versus Cincinnati in which he yielded just five hits, one walk and 2 runs while striking out six. Eickhoff’s last five starts against the Mets have produced a 2.03 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 4.13:1 (33-8) K:BB and just one home runs. Current Mets hitters are batting .244 against him with a .312 OBP and .427 SLG%.

Philadelphia’s bullpen situation tonight likely requests at least six strong innings out of Eickhoff (preferably seven) since closer Jenmar Gomez (30 pitches yesterday) and 7th inning Pat Neshek (back-to-back days, 37 pitches) are likely unavailable. Still, the Phillies should have enough back end arms to keep the light hitting Mets (.200 team BA, .271 OBP, .596 OPS) from doing any damage. New York has multiple key arms ready to cover the back third with the only exception being heavily worked Fernando Salas.
