Almost as shocking as Barry Zito's complete game shutout against the Rockies Monday was the gem Chicago received from the often times erratic Jeff Samardzija. Thrust into the role of a starter, Samardzija allowed just one earned run and struck out eight in a 4-3 win over Washington. But perhaps even more impressive is that he didn't walk a batter (some thanks should probably go out to umpire Doug Eddings). So was Samardzija's performance a one-time deal or a sign of potential? According to
FanGraphs, a few stats indicate that he could be a "capable starter" which for the Cubs (1-4) is pretty good news. Samardzija is scheduled to throw Friday at St. Louis.
