MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants

07.21.2017     08:37 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Otto Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Cahill) +148 at San Francisco (Samardzija) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: San Diego

What's the old saying? You'll never make money betting on bad teams? That's not always true as all teams, both good and bad, can offer value. But I do subscribe to it being tough to make money backing bad MLB teams as sizable chalk. It's not even August, and every coach and player for the San Francisco Giants is counting the days until this disaster of a season is over. After last night's loss (as -200 favorites) the Giants sit at 37-60. Tonight, Jeff Samardzija and his much ballyhooed K-to-BB ratio take the hill. He's no doubt pitched better than a 4.86 ERA but he's also coughed up 20 home runs and hammered into submission last time out against these same Padres to the tune of seven runs over six innings. I'm shocked that San Diego hasn't moved Trevor Cahill who has everything you want in a midseason starting pitcher acquisition: K rate (11.1 per 9), GB rate (56.8%), 3.23 FIP, and most important, freshness with only 57.1 IP on the season. Those numbers probably won't last assuming he takes the hill every fifth day the remainder of the season. But right now, is there really a difference between what he brings to the table and Samardzija? And is there really a difference between either of these bottom feeder teams? The answer to both is no. Which is why grabbing nearly +150 with the underdog warrants a play.

MLB Gambling: There will come a time when fading the Dodgers and Astros will yield profits

07.20.2017     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros are pretty good. And barring a historical collapse, they will win their respective divisions. They've also made a ton of money for their backers despite rising price tags. The Dodgers are up nearly +24 units with an average moneyline price of -179. The Astros not far behind at +18.7 units with an average moneyline price of -142. Not only are both teams winning games, but they are doing it in dominant fashion. Check out the current run differential for both teams compared to the leaders of past seasons. Unsustainable? Perhaps. But you can literally bet that come the last few weeks of the season, there's money to be made fading both squads.

Year - Run Differential
2017 - Dodgers +1.9
2017 - Astros +1.7

2016 - Cubs +1.6
2016 - Red Sox +1.1

2015 - Blue Jays +1.4
2015 - Cardinals +0.8

2014 - A's +1.0
2014 - Angels +0.9

2013 - Cardinals +1.2
2013 - Red Sox +1.2

2012 - Nationals +0.8
2012 - Yankees +0.8

Reports say match fixing may have occurred at Wimbledon

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There have been plenty of stories of some C-Class soccer team in the Balkans tanking a game and sportsbooks noticing ridiculous betting patterns. Or a tennis match where the 934th-ranked player in the world mysteriously beats the 103rd-ranked player in the world in straight sets. What we generally don't see -- or are made aware of -- is match/game fixing at the higher levels. However, according to reports by the Tennis Integrity Unit, as many as three matches at Wimbledon were recently flagged.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland A's

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Faria) +113 at Oakland (Gray) O/U 8
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

The Rays have come out of the break playing winning baseball, winning four out of five on their current road trip. They’ve been clutch throughout this run; getting the key outs from their bullpen in high leverage situations and taking advantage of late inning opportunities themselves, like their ‘two out, nobody on’ rally in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday. The Rays trail Boston by only two games in the AL East standings right now, a surging team worth riding, especially in this underdog price range.

Meanwhile, the Oakland A’s, have been a steady fixture in last place in the AL West for the last two months. They notched a series sweep over the Indians last weekend., but were unable to carry any of that momentum forward, losing the first two games of this set. It’s surely worth noting that the last time Oakland had a home sweep, they followed it up by getting swept in a four game set at home in their next series. This is not the type of squad primed to deliver extended runs of winning baseball over the back half of the campaign."

Oakland GM Billy Beane has announced that the team is in full rebuild mode. He just traded two key relievers for future prospects, leaving manager Bob Melvin to say this about his bullpen moving forward: "We'll figure it out on the fly a little bit.” Figuring it out on the fly cost them the game last night, and the negative momentum in Oakland is palpable right now, even with ace Sonny Gray on the hill. Gray, too, is on the trading block — be sure to play this game as ‘action’ not as ‘listed pitchers’ if you get involved with a wager. Take the Rays.

Gambling Update: DraftKings and FanDuel decide against partnership

07.18.2017     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

Looks as is DraftKings and FanDuel weren't in the mood to tangle with the Feds. The once proposed merger is no longer as both companies will remain separate.

“[W]e believe it is in the best interests of our customers, employees, and investors to terminate our agreement to merge with FanDuel and move forward as a separate company,” DraftKings said. “This will allow us to singularly focus on our mission of providing the most innovative and engaging interactive sports experience imaginable, forever changing the way fans connect with teams and athletes worldwide.”

Government tries to nix FanDuel-DraftKings partnership

The Federal Trade Commission is trying to stop a potential merger between Daily Fantasy Sports giants DraftKings and FanDuel. The reason is simple: They would then control as much as 90 percent of the market.

"It all comes down to how you define the relevant market, and that's where they fell short," Daniel Wallach, a Florida attorney who specializes in gambling and sports law, said of the two companies. "And I'm not convinced they'll do any better in a federal court."

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates

07.18.2017     08:25 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Guerra) at Pittsburgh (Nova) -145 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

In terms of matchups, this isn't an ideal one for Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova. Milwaukee of course is a free swinging bunch that rarely walks and likes to hit the long ball. Nova, one of the league's most frequent strike throwers (15 BBs in 120.2 IP), has allowed 15 home runs on the season with nearly half (7) coming over his last five outings. In his lone start against the Brew Crew, Nova allowed 13 baserunners and was perhaps fortunate to surrender a modest four runs over seven innings. Milwaukee's Junior Guerra showed promise last season when he flashed a 2.81 ERA over 121 IP. But for a guy north of 30 years old and limited MLB experience, it was going to be tricky to sustain. Sure enough, Guerra has come crashing down to earth thanks to a rapid rise in walks and fly ball rate. Guerra has issues 31 free passes over just 49 IP while coughing up 13 dingers. Like Nova, he was fortunate that last time these two teams hooked up as he allowed 12 baserunners and nine line drives but escaped with only three earned runs over six inning. We were successful in playing yesterday's game under the total. Today's matchup dictates a strong look in the opposite direction.

College Football Betting News: Kansas hopes new OC will spark improvement

07.18.2017     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Recruiting at Kansas isn't easy but the Jayhawks this offseason marked perhaps the biggest score since head coach David Beaty took over with the "recruitment" of former TCU offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. Meacham has a big hand in the Horned Frogs' offense going from pedestrian to prolific. The tricky thing for Meacham will be doing it with far less talent. Kansas was one of 12 teams nationally that failed to average over 5 yards per play last season.

“I called him 10 times and offered him so much, I told him ‘look, you can have all the money, I’ll hire everyone else for a dollar,’” Beaty said on Monday, the first of two Big 12 Football Media Days in Frisco, Texas. “’You can have it all, what’s it going to take to get you here?’ Cause I just think that much of him.”

“He’s one of the best offensive minds in college football,” Beaty said. “Bringing him to Lawrence was an incredible addition to an already amazing group of coaches and men that we have at our place.”

MLB Handicapping: Dodgers and Kershaw a -300 road favorite

07.18.2017     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tonight is likely to mark the 20th time in his career Clayton Kershaw will go off as a -300 or more favorite. His track record under those parameters is pretty strong as the Dodgers won 16 of the 19 games (+6.8 units). The run-line during that span is slightly better as +8.5 units. Because of the high price tag, bettors can get as much as +160 on the White Sox at +1.5 runs. Since 2014, MLB favorites of -300 or more have won 22 of 26 games (84.6%), good for over +9 units of profit. Kershaw was on the hill for 15 of those 26 contests. This will however mark only the second time Kershaw has been priced -300 or higher on the road.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Suter) at Pittsburgh (Kuhl) -120 O/U 9
Recommendation: Under

Chad Kuhl's seasonal numbers don't get many bettors excited. But since increasing his fastball velocity a few starts back, he's quietly been effective. Over Kuhl's last seven outings he flashed a 3.50 ERA with solid 29-15 K-to-BB ratio over 36 innings. He was asked to throw on short rest right before the All-Star Break but has had over a week to recover and should hit the ground running in this his second season. He's not a bad matchup against the free swinging Milwaukee Brewers. Kuhl's command is the one thing lacking but in two outings against the Brew Crew, Kuhl fanned eight batter in 8 innings and allowed only two walks and two runs. Milwaukee's Brent Suter is another young arm that has the potential to thrive in the National League. Suter has primarily been used as a reliever but due to injuries is being asked to fill in as a spot starter. A soft-tossing, late blooming lefty, Suter relies on a heavy dose of strikes (187 walks over 679 career innings). In two starts against Baltimore and the New York Yankees, Suter allowed just two runs while fanning 13 and walking only two batters. He's in a favorable situation tonight against a light-hitting Pirates lineup and in a ballpark that heavily favors southpaws. We'll look to capitalize on Suter's first-time-through-the-league as well as Kuhl's steady improvement and play this game under the total.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins

07.17.2017     09:04 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Mitchell) at Minnesota (Mejia) -102 O/U 10
Recommendation: Minnesota

Good situational spot here for the Twins as they get New York off of a grueling four game set at Boston which ended with a doubleheader yesterday. Reliever Bryan Mitchell is forced into the rotation tonight so the Yankees can keep their starters on normal rest. It’s uncertain how long Mitchell can go in this one since he’s only thrown 7.1 innings this season in his 12 relief appearances. Minnesota has a huge opportunity here if they can get to Mitchell and chase him early because the Yankees bullpen is extremely thin tonight. With their top three arms heavily used over the weekend, have to figure closer Aroldis Chapman (has thrown three straight days), setup man Dellin Betances (threw two of last three days) and Tyler Clippard (thrown back-to-back days) are all either unavailable or only if necessary. Either way, their effectiveness should be less than 100%. Add to that Adam Warren (pitched 2 of last 3 days) and Chase Shreve and Chad Green (have each pitched back-to-back days) and you can see the difficulties Joe Girardi faces with his pitching tonight.

Meanwhile, the Twins send 24-year-old Adalberto Mejia to the hill with a rested bullpen behind him. Mejia owns a 2.79 ERA over his last five starts which encompass 29 innings. Walks remain an issue for the LH as he’s now given 32 free passes in just 65 innings and he’s had some troubles at home owning a 5.62 ERA at Target Field. However, he has been tougher on right handed bats than lefties (.553 SLG% vs. LH/.429 vs RH) which bodes well here since New York power sources Aaron Judge & Gary Sanchez are righties. He’s allowed just 1 HR every 25 AB to right handed hitters. Overall he’ll need to give the Twins 5-6 solid innings in this contest and let Minnesota’s bullpen do the rest.

This is an important series for the Twins who sit just 1.5 games out of first place in the AL Central and the second Wild Card spot behind these Yankees. They seem to remain in pretty good form as indicated by playing the AL’s top team Houston very tough this weekend despite losing the series. The offense is likely to capitalize and put up a lot of runs in this spot which makes the cheap price worth taking.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Guerra) +180 at New York (Montgomery) O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Brewers have vaulted to the top of the NL Central division thanks to a recent 7-1 streak. They scored 4+ runs six times during that span and have also blistered southpaws all season long to the tune of over 5 runs per game. They face a lefty tonight in New York’s Jordan Montgomery who has pitched well this season but can at times be prone to the long ball having allowed six over his last four starts. Hitting dingers is what Milwaukee does best with 133 on the year; second only to the powerful Houston Astros (138). But perhaps most concerning for the Yankees is not Montgomery but their problematic bullpen with Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and even closer Aroldis Chapman all struggling to nail things down in the latter innings of late. Milwaukee’s Junior Guerra doesn’t have the type of seasonal numbers that suggest he’ll thrive in an American League park. But the young righty’s stats are somewhat skewed due to a poor start (8 ERs, 4 HRs) at Cincinnati. Outside of that outing, he’s been solid having allowed three runs or less in seven of nine trips to the hill. All of the key arms Milwaukee’s bullpen should be fresh and available after yesterday’s 11-2 romp over the Chicago Cubs and that matters since Guerra doesn’t generally go deep into games. The Brewers are one of the most profitable teams in MLB (+15.2 units) thanks to a near .500 record (25-27) as an underdog. The AL side getting a bit too much respect here as the underdog price is simply too good to pass up.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers

07.05.2017     12:33 PM     Drew Martin     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Drew Martin

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Fister) at Texas (Cashner)
Recommendation: Over 6 1st 5-innings

There a reason this 5-inning total is sitting at 6: Two above average offenses that rank in the top four in runs scores in the American League going up against two very suspect starting pitchers in a ballpark that has a tendency to play "small" during the summer months.

Boston's Doug Fister has been serviceable since being called (11 IP, 6 ERs) up but the 33-year-old veteran wasn't pitching in The Show for a reason. After parlaying his success in Detroit for a big pay day in Washington, Fister's stuff started to diminish. North of 30-years-old, Fister was then shipped to the Astros and thus the American League where he was pounded around throughout the 2016 season (4.64 ERA, 32 starts). The Red Sox are hoping he can chew up a few starts but it's not likely he'll produce much long term.

On the other side is Andrew Cashner, who after a strong April and May, saw his numbers skyrocket. While only recording 22 IP in June, Cashner gave up 33 hits. Cashner's new pitch-to-contact style got him through the first two months of the season but his stats (4.36 Ks per 9, 3.87 ERA, 5.39 xFIP) suggest his struggles will continue. In an earlier start vs. Boston, he was smacked around for five runs over five innings. And he was obviously afraid to attack hitters, hence four walks and only two strikeouts.

Respect both bullpens which is why we'll key in on the 1st five inning going over 6.

MLB Handicapping: Atlanta Braves' schedule about to get difficult

07.05.2017     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to ESPN's MLB Relative Index, the Atlanta Braves -- and the rest of the NL East -- have played six of the eight easiest schedules. Atlanta is particularly noteworthy because on the surface, 40-42 is a pretty respectable record for a team projected to win around 73-74 games. But it's important to note that despite that "easy" slate, they've been outscored by 48 runs. Couple that will a far more daunting schedule over the next month and it's easy to conclude the Braves are going to start trending in the wrong direction. Tonight, they close a quick two-game series vs. Houston (lost Game 1, 16-4). Check out the slate heading into August.

at Washington (4 games)
vs. Arizona (3 games)
vs. Chicago Cubs (3 games)
at LA Dodgers (4 games)
at Arizona (3 games)
at Philadelphia (4 games)
vs. LA Dodgers (3 games)

But blindly betting against the Braves (+5 units YTD) during that span could be tricky. They've on average been priced as +117 underdogs and that's with the aforementioned "soft" schedule. Bettors looking to fade the Braves will be faced with plenty of -180 or more price tags moving forward.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Kansas City Royals at Seattle Mariners

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City (Kennedy) +130 at Seattle (Moore) O/U 9
Recommendation: Kansas City

Kansas City’s push to 41-40 and second place in the AL Central Division has been an absolute jackpot for anyone who saw it coming. Over their last 21 games, the Royals have gone 15-6 and produced a hefty profit of +9.37 units. During this current stretch, Ian Kennedy has taken the hill four times with the team going 4-0 resulting in +4.64 units. The numbers have been good for Kennedy in this streak (2.70 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 19-4 K/BB ratio and only 29 total bases allowed). Home Runs have been problematic for the fly ball prone veteran and but he’s limited the damage of late allowing four solo shots over his last 23.1 IP. Seattle has a potent and dangerous lineup but it figures to be somewhat diminished tonight with clean-up hitter Nelson Cruz nursing a knee injury.

Taking the mound for the M’s will be 23-year-old rookie Andrew Moore whose first career start came 11 days ago on June 22. In that contest he threw seven quality innings against Detroit giving up just three runs and six hits. The 100-pitch effort saw Moore register six groundball outs and 10 flyball outs while averaging 91.2 mph on his fastball.

Kansas City is on a fantastic offensive run over the last nine days posting a .301 BA, .359 OBP, .869 OPS while over the same span, Seattle has gone cold .236 BA, .322 OBP, .721 OPS. Fundamentally this looks to be a good matchup for the contact making Royals offense vs. Moore who struck out just four of the 26 batters he faced. Meanwhile, Kennedy’s 2-6 record is very misleading considering he owns a season long WHIP of 1.18 and a BAA of .204. KC’s bullpen is the better one in this series matchup but they are a bit taxed heading into tonight’s game making their advantage less than what it would normally be over the disastrous Seattle relief corps. On a short and unattractive Monday card, the hot Kansas City Royals are worth a look at this underdog price.
