CFL Betting Free Pick: Edmonton Eskimos at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Edmonton -7.5 at Winnipeg O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Over

We have seen some deflation in the total here in this 2018 CFL season opener between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers taking place on Thursday night. Note this game will be airing live on ESPN2 in the United States as are all Week 1 games in the CFL. This is a rematch of the West Division Semifinal from last year’s playoffs which Edmonton won and covered on this field by a score of 39-32. Edmonton should have a terrific offense yet again this season with veteran QB Mike Reilly at the controls and coming off a very strong 2017 season. RB C.J. Gable transformed this offense after the Eskimos acquired him midway through last season in a trade with Hamilton. After Gable’s addition to the team in early October last season, Edmonton scored 28+ points in every remaining game and went 6-1 SU and ATS in the process. They became a very well balanced offense that was difficult to stop and even with Brandon Zylstra leaving for the NFL, the Eskimos still possess plenty of talented receivers for Reilly to throw the ball to with this Edmonton passing attack.

Winnipeg took steps to improve their defense for this season after they gave up a lot of yards last season but this will be a tall order for them playing one of the best offenses in the CFL in their first game. The reason this total has seen some Under $$ is largely the absence of Winnipeg’s #1 QB Matt Nichols who suffered an injury in training camp which will keep him out of action for the first 4-6 weeks of the season. The Blue Bombers will be turning to rookie QB Chris Streveler (who played in College at Minnesota and later North Dakota State in the FCS ranks) in place of Nichols for this game and even though he is very green and inexperienced in the CFL making his first ever start here, he has impressed the Winnipeg coaching staff in practices and in preseason game action and they have emphatically spoken confidently about his dual threat ability which is always a plus for success in the CFL. He may not have as many struggles as some rookie QBs do making their first start simply because the Edmonton Eskimos lost a lot of key pieces on the defensive side of the football and I'm not entirely sure they will be as strong defensively this year. The Edmonton secondary is also a bit ravaged as Aaron Grymes won't play in this game due to a suspension and Johnny Adams one of their other starting defensive backs hasn't practiced all week and is doubtful for Thursday night’s game. This total opened at 53 and has fallen three points and is now sitting at 50. I think the value has now clearly shifted after the early knee jerk “rookie CFL QB making his first start” Under money came in. I think this game will feature more points than expected and it’s worth noting the Over was 7-1 in Edmonton’s last 8 road games of the 2017 season and the Over has cashed in three straight times between the Eskimos and Blue Bombers when they have played here in Winnipeg. I’ll recommend a play on the over in this Thursday night divisional battle to kick off the CFL season.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Dodgers

Texas (Colon) at Los Anegels (Ferguson) -175 O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have been cashing winners betting the Dodgers Over the total in recent days, and there’s little reason to expect a dramatically different result from LA’s hot lineup against Bartolo Colon tonight.

To say that the Dodgers bats are on fire right now would not be an overstatement. LA has scored 11, 12, 10, 5, 9, 8, 7, 3 and 7 runs in their last nine ballgames, cashing eight Overs in the process. Just about every power bat that Dave Roberts has at his disposal is crushing the ball. LA has hit three home runs or more seven times in nine June games while leading the majors (by far) with 26 dingers already this month.

That’s bad news for Bartolo Colon, who needed 97 pitches to labor through five innings of work in his last outing. Colon is extremely vulnerable to the home run ball, allowing 16 bombs in just 71.1 innings of work so far this season. Current Dodgers have hit .288 against him with five home runs in a decent sample size of 104 at bats. Behind Colon, the Rangers bullpen has already taken 11 losses this season, and the Dodgers have put together more than one late inning rally during this hot streak.

But the Rangers can hit too, coming off a homestand in which they scored seven runs or more in half of their games. With four starters on the DL, the Dodgers have essentially run out of effective starting pitching options, leaving Caleb Ferguson as the spot starter following a call-up from AAA. Ferguson couldn’t make it out of the second inning at Pittsburgh in his MLB debut last week, and I’m not convinced his second try is going to be significantly better.

Behind Ferguson, the Dodgers bullpen, too, has shown real vulnerability, leaving the door open for some late inning shenanigans should we need them. On a very warm evening in LA, expect runs in bunches from both squads here! Take the Over.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds

06.08.2018     10:10 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Weaver) at Cincinnati (Harvey) +120 O/U 9.5
Reommendation: Cincinnati

The Cardinals are 7-0 against the Reds so far this season, a streak primed to end tonight with an underdog payout for Cincinnati bettors. The Cardinals continue to play mediocre baseball into June, just 7-8 in their last 15 ballgames. They’ve gone 3-6 in Luke Weaver’s last nine starts. It’s surely worth noting that Weaver has gotten into the sixth inning only twice during that entire span.

It’s also worth noting that even in those two ‘gems’ games from Weaver, the Cardinals lost both times. Plus, Weaver has a fairly sharp home/road dichotomy, with opponents hitting .276 against him on the highway compared to .213 at home, and his career numbers against this Cincinnati lineup are mediocre at best.

Weaver’s inability to eat up innings is a major factor here considering the continued struggles of the St Louis bullpen behind him. Over the last week, this bullpen has been lit up on three separate occasions with a pair of blown saves and a 6.56 ERA overall. In fact, it’s Cincinnati with the vastly superior bullpen numbers both for the full season and of late (five blown saves compared to ten for St Louis and an ERA that is a half run lower).

Cinci is coming off a momentum building extra inning win over Colorado. Their lineup is clicking, pounding out ten or more hits in each of their last four ballgames. Starter Matt Harvey has enjoyed plenty of success against this Cardinals lineup, allowing only one run in ten innings of work against them. Harvey’s only start with the Reds at the Great American Ballpark was a gem against the Pirates and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we see another strong showing from Harvey tonight. Live dog here!

College Football Betting: Virginia Tech's offseason not going well

06.08.2018     10:01 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We have our first offseason "oh shit" situation in college football. Last week, Virginia Tech lost two potential starting cornerbacks. Now it is being reported starting quarterback Josh Jackson may be suspended for academic issues. The Hokies, who ranked 13th in 2017 in total defense, were also hit hard by the draft including two first round linebackers. To make matters worse, Tech opens the season with a conference game at Florida State. South Point opened the game a pick 'em, CRIS opened FSU -5.5. Those sportsbooks choosing not to take the game off of the board have the Seminoles -7 home chalk.

NHL Gambling: Washington Capitals win Stanley Cup, Las Vegas sportsbooks rejoice

06.08.2018     09:47 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers reportedly took steps to avoid a massive hit had the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup. In the end, they were still likely happy with the outcome.

"Remember, there have been opportunities to get off this," Avello noted. "People have bet other teams, a lot of shops have put up yes/no props [on the Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup], and through each playoff series and game to game, we've been forcing the hand to bet the other side."

"We cut our liability in half on the field bet," Murray said. "We gave a good price on the field in January because we saw how big the [futures] number was. If we did nothing, we'd have been looking at a seven-figure liability."

Delaware sportsbooks have big opening day

06.07.2018     09:51 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was reported that Delaware's sportsbooks accepted $322K worth of wagers on Tuesday. That's not bad though we'd love to see the figures on a Thursday in late July when the MLB card is littered with -250 chalk.

"For us, it's really an enhancement of our tourism industry," Carney told ESPN on Tuesday. "It will attract a lot of visitors to our state, particularly at this time of year, during the summer, coming to our beautiful beaches south of here. They come here and stop at the casinos and do slot machine and table gaming. This will be another opportunity for them."

MLB Handicapping: Delaware sportsbooks dealing 20 cent lines

06.07.2018     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly

We admit we're a little disappointed to see Delaware (i.e. William Hill) sportsbooks offering 20 cent lines on MLB. However, they offered that on every game, even those with big favorites. Your typical sportsbook will deal 10 cent lines on games up to around -150. From there, they will jump to 15 cents, 20 cents, and even 30 cents as the price increases. You'll notice on the clip below, the Cubs were -220 and the Phillies +200. To compare, Minnesota is around a -200 favorite over the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. Las Vegas' South Point and Cantor show 25 cent lines (-210/+185). CRIS slightly less at 22 cents (-206/+184). That said, it's a real bummer to see -120/+100. It'll be interesting to see if these new sportsbooks adjust in attempts to drum up more business once the initial rush of interest subsides.

New Jersey's Golden Nugget may be left out of sports betting barrage

06.07.2018     09:20 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey's Golden Nugget Casino may not be able to offer sports betting due its owner’s connection with the NBA. Billionaire Tilman Fertitta also owns the Houston Rockets which on the surface is an obvious conflict of interest. Las Vegas' Golden Nugget didn't accept any wagers on Rockets-Warriors series.

"When you own teams when wagering is taking place, other games could have an impact on how your team performs," Sweeney, D-Gloucester, told NJ Advance Media. "You're not supposed to have both sides."

"My bigger concern is: You'd be able to control both sides of the equation when you're making bets," he said. "Someone said, 'Just don't let them bet on their team.' Well, guess what? The outcome of a game could make a difference on who wins the conference. There are a whole lot of other bets that take place."

"They're controlling both ends of the interest," Sweeney added. "You can divest in one or the other. You can't do both. We tried to compromise as much as we could."

Gimme putt all that remains for New Jersey sports betting

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey needs to jump through a few more hoops in order to start offering sports betting at its casinos. Lawmakers are expected to give the nod later today which means all that is left is the governor's signature.

“They want to see it happen sooner than later. We do too, but we want to do it right,” Murphy said in an interview Tuesday.

“Other than getting a good law to sign, there’s not really a big hurdle,” he added.

Philadelphia (Nola) +120 at Chicago (Quintana) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Philadelphia's Aaron Nola has been a model of consistency; on a strong stretch that includes an allowance of only a single run or less in five of his last six starts. He has shown the ability to be effective and pitch well on the road too with a 2.45 ERA and has pitched deep into ballgames going 7+ innings in six of his last ten starts. That should save what has sometimes been a shaky and erratic Phillies bullpen from having to get a ton of outs in tonight's game. On the flip side, lefty Jose Quintana has been slightly better of late but those two good outings came against the subpar lineups of the Reds and Mets. Overall, Quintana has struggled this season at Wrigley Field with a 6.66 ERA in five starts and his track record against the Phillies is not much better: 0-2, 7.36 ERA in two previous starts. Philadelphia cashed a big dog ticket last night in the series opener and I like their chances here of making it two wins in a row at another attractive plus price.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners

06.01.2018     11:28 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Romo) +122 at Seattle (Leake) O/U 8
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

The betting markets are having a hard time pricing the Tampa Bay Rays correctly these days, now that manager Kevin Cash has gone to Sergio Romo as his ‘opener’. Romo will be making his fifth start for Tampa – the first four coming in a nine day span in May -- but his longest stint was 1.1 innings.

The Rays braintrust have decided that opening with a reliever who can get righties out is the way to go right now, but the betting markets have no clear path to follow in games where the ‘starter’ doesn’t enter the game until the second inning. That offers value for bettors who can accurately assess Tampa’s chances for winning – teams that think outside the box in MLB often offer overlays for savvy gamblers.

Romo is taking his new role very seriously: "It's an opportunity to help my team out in a different situation, in a different inning, but with the same concept. The concept in our job is to get outs, regardless of the inning. It's fun that it's the beginning and I'm all for it. If they think I help the team out best doing this, OK, let's do it. If they think in another form or fashion, I'm in."

The Rays are playing good baseball of late, taking three out of four to open this West Coast swing at Oakland and six of their last eight overall. They’ve been significant profit producers on the highway all season: 17-14 on the road, despite playing sub .500 baseball at the Trop in Tampa. The Mariners just split a series at home with the last place Rangers, and they, too, have a better road record than they do at home. The optimal spot for betting profitability from BOTH of these teams is away from home.

Mariners starter Mike Leake has no strikeout pitch these days, notching only seven K’s in his last three starts combined. That’s bad news against a ‘contact’ lineup like that of the Rays. Behind him, the Seattle bullpen is anything but fresh after a rough series against the Rangers, leaving the door open for some late inning shenanigans should we need them. Take the Rays.
