NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Los Angeles Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Winnipeg +150 at Los Angeles O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket betting against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in their 2-0 shutout road loss to the Edmonton Oilers. I see another opportunity for another wager against the struggling Kings tonight as they return home to face the Winnipeg Jets. Los Angeles is 1-4 in its last five games games with the only victory coming against woeful Buffalo. The Kings have been an offensively challenged team all season but their struggles to score goals have reached new lows in recent games as they’ve been held to two goals or less in five straight games and just six goals total during that span. And the Kings’ strong home record has taken a hit recently with just two wins in their last five tries. After two awful showings in Alberta against Calgary and Edmonton (outscored 7-2) earlier this week, the Kings are eight points behind the final wild card spot in the West with only 10 games left to play. Winnipeg has been on a little uptick of late with three straight wins over the NY Islanders, Minnesota and Philadelphia. Winnipeg continues to play the role of spoiler despite being out of the playoff race. The Jets are 5-2 in the last seven meetings against the Kings including victories in two of their last three visits to LA. This is a live underdog well worth a look tonight.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: UCLA Bruins vs. Kentucky Wildcats

03.23.2017     08:14 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA -1 vs. Kentucky O/U 165.5
Recommendation: Under

When Kentucky and UCLA met in non-conference play back in December, the game was an instant classic; a 97-92 Bruins victory in a high octane shootout. Both teams played fast – a frenetic tempo from a pair of teams that were struggling mightily on defense at the time. And both teams shot the ball well, combining for 47% shooting from the floor, including 18 made three-pointers. No surprise, then, that the rematch is the single highest totaled game in the NCAA Tournament so far.
But there’s little reason to expect the high stakes rematch to be played in similar fashion. That was then. This is now.

John Calipari spent the back half of the season coaching up the Kentucky defense. It’s worked! The lengthy, athletic Wildcats are wreaking havoc on the defensive end of the court in recent weeks. Only one of their last nine opponents has scored more than 70 points against them, with Kentucky holding foes under 40% from the floor during that span. No surprise, then, that the Wildcats are 8-1 to the Under in those last nine ballgames, including a snail’s pace Round of 32 game against Wichita State. And this is the highest total – by far – that Kentucky has seen during this span.

UCLA’s offense is similar to that of the Golden State Warriors in one key regard – it’s speed of ball movement. When teams face UCLA for the first time, they’re often overwhelmed, like Kentucky was in the first meeting. The rematch, however, isn’t as much of a basketball culture shock, because they’ve seen it before. That’s how teams like USC and Arizona slowed UCLA down in rematch situations down the stretch of the PAC-12 campaign. And, as Kentucky already knows that getting into a track meet with the Bruins is a losing proposition. Expect a very different pace mentality from the Wildcats this time around!

Last, but not least, UCLA’s defense has improved by leaps and bounds from where they were a few months ago. This WAS a bad defensive team for the better part of the first three months of the season. But in PAC-12 play, the Bruins were actually #2 in the entire conference in two point shooting percentage allowed. The Bruins don’t force many turnovers, leading to easy fast break buckets on the other end. But they’ve been fundamentally sound for the better part of the last two months now and Kentucky is not a jack threes type of team, averaging fewer than seven makes per game. Expect this rematch to be a much lower scoring affair than the first meeting, staying under the total with room to spare.

NBA Betting Update: New Orleans shows modest profits since acquiring Cousins

03.21.2017     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're nearly a month into the DeMarcus Cousins-Anthony Davis experiment and the results have been better of late. After a sluggish start (0-3 SU/ATS), the New Orleans Pelicans have won and covered four of five. Since Cousins joined the Pelicans, they are 6-7 SU and 7-5-1 ATS. The Sacramento Kings haven't fared well without Cousins with just three wins in 13 games (5-7-1 ATS). And while the Kings were already headed towards the lottery win Cousins, New Orleans' playoff hopes look very bleak with ESPN's Playoff Tracker currently giving them less than a 1% chance with 11 games remaining.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Rhode Island Rams vs. Oregon Ducks

03.19.2017     08:34 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rhode Island +5 vs. Oregon O/U 141
Recommendation: Rhode Island

When we talk about impact injuries on the defensive end of the court, the Ducks loss of shot blocking center Chris Boucher really stands out. Boucher was not a great offensive player, but he was a low post difference maker on defense. In their first game without him in the lineup, the Ducks struggled to get stops, allowing 83 points on 58% shooting in the PAC-12 title game against Arizona. In their second game without Boucher, they allowed 77 points on 44% shooting to Iona.

The pointspread outcome in that game came down to the final possession despite the fact that the Ducks shot 56% from the floor and won the rebounding battle by 14. That’s certainly not a good sign moving forward, and Oregon is not a ‘value laden’ team at this stage of the campaign.

Rhode Island is on the other end of the ‘value’ equation. The Rams did not play their best basketball, struggling SU and ATS early and often in November, December and into January. Key contributors like senior low post stud Hassan Martin, junior point guard Jarvis Garrett missed time, and the team didn’t immediately jell upon either guys’ return to the lineup.

That was then. This is now. Unburdened by any inflated pointspreads due to their mediocrity for months, Danny Hurley’s squad finally put it together down the stretch: 9-0 SU and 7-2 ATS in their last nine games; 13-2 SU and 11-4 ATS in their last 15. This was a fringe Top 25 squad coming into the season, playing at that level here in March! Look for the Rams to give the Ducks everything they can handle on Sunday evening.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Marquette Golden Eagles vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

03.17.2017     08:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Marquette vs. South Carolina -1 O/U 142
Recommendation: Under

South Carolina doesn’t play at a snail’s pace, but they are truly an elite defensive team and just as truly an ugly offensive team.  So while this total makes sense given the Gamecocks pace of play, it looks a good notch or two too high for this bettor due to the way the play, not their pace of play.  To put this total in perspective, the Gamecocks last game in the SEC tourney against Alabama, was totaled at 122.5 and it stayed under with room to spare.

When we look at the Gamecocks results from non-conference play against opponents who were not familiar with their intense, physical style, we saw totals that were routinely priced waaaaaaay too high.  They were lined at 156.5 against Monmouth, a game that finished with 120 points in regulation.  Their game against Michigan was totaled at 136.5, finishing with 107 points.  Against Syracuse on a neutral floor at Madison Square Garden, it was another game that stayed 20+ points Under.  Similar class games Seton Hall on a neutral floor, Clemson and Memphis were all low scoring games that stayed under the total.

The numbers show it clearly, and they also show a matchup problem for Marquette. The Golden Eagles are a one trick pony – they shoot three pointers better than any other team in the country, averaging 10.5 makes per game on 43% shooting from downtown.  Marcus Howard, Andrew Rowsey, Katin Reinhardt and Sam Hauser are all ‘Deadeye Dicks’ from long range.

But South Carolina’s perimeter defense is as good as it gets, a team ranked #3 nationally in defensive efficiency and #5 in the nation against opposing three point shooters  This is not a game where we can expect Marquette to light up the scoreboard from long range.  And when the Eagles aren’t draining 3’s in bunches, they’re not scoring in the 80’s and 90’s; a team that didn’t even average 70 points per game in their last four losses; all games where those three point shots didn’t fall at quite the same rate

South Carolina’s offense is ugly.  They finished the season ranked #315 in effective field goal percentage on offense, ranked #318 on two point shot attempts and #245 on three pointers.  Sindariuos Thornwell is a scorer, averaging 21 points per game on 44% shooting.  The rest of the team?  Not a strong shooter to be found, from inside or outside the arc.  Expect a typical 'Frank Martin coached' brick fest in Greenville on Friday Night!

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Bucknell Bison vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

03.16.2017     08:45 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Bucknell +13 vs. West Virginia O/U 148
Recommendation: Bucknell

West Virginia is deep, athletic and forces turnovers as well as any team in the country with their pressing style but now they are up against a Bucknell squad that will look to slow them down and grind in the half-court at every opportunity. If that occurs, it will force West Virginia to have to execute their offense and make shots in the half court and that is something they have struggled with on multiple occasions this season. I’m not fully convinced that the Mountaineers can execute well enough in a half-court game to be able to win this game by the margin that this pointspread is calling for. Bucknell has a couple strong interior players including junior forward Zach Thomas who leads the team in scoring at 16 ppg and is second in rebounding and their center Nana Foulland is second in scoring and the Bison’s leading rebounder. Bucknell has a fairly solid rebounding rate on the season so they shouldn’t be intimidated by West Virginia in the battle on the glass. Bucknell has multiple solid ball handlers in their backcourt led by PG Stephen Brown and SG Kimbal MacKenzie. Brown has a solid 2.62 assist-to-turnover ratio (163 assists and 62 turnovers for him this season) on the campaign now much of that did come against a softer schedule but this at least indicates that the Bison PG has taken care of the basketball for much of the season and that of course is crucial to success against the presses of West Virginia. The Mountaineers were money burners all season long as double digit chalk notching a 3-10 ATS mark in 13 games as double-digit favorites this season and I’m not sure this matchup against Bucknell will prove to be one that allows them to ever gain a comfortable margin in this game.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Wisconsin Badgers

03.16.2017     06:06 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech +5.5 vs. Wisconsin O/U 136
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Contrasting styles in this East Regional late tip-off which features teams who enter in very different form against the spread. For Virginia Tech the last 10 games have seen their supporters collect nine times. The only loss in the Hokies current 90% ticket cashing streak came on March 4 when they were -1.5 point favorites against Wake Forest in the second round of the ACC Tournament. VT is 7-1 ATS since losing third leading scorer Chris Clark. At the time, that injury to the Hokies most athletic player seemed devastating but they’ve gone 6-0 ATSas an underdog winning four of those straight up. A huge part of the success goes to their offense which posted a 57.1 effective FG% in ACC play which ranked #1 in the conference. Buzz Williams’ team was also #1 from 3-point range in league play shooting a stellar 41.4% led by Seth Allen (45.1%), Justin Bibbs (42.5%) and Ty Outlaw (48.2%. In all, five players have at least 107 3-point attempts and they all shoot 36.4% or better. That perimeter marksmanship will keep Wisconsin busy while they’ll also have to contend with Tech’s interior force, leading scorer Zach LeDay (16.7 ppg). The Hokies diverse offense is enhanced by Allen’s ability to get to the rim, and the fact that six of their seven player rotation shoots between 73.7% to 80% from the free throw line.

Wisconsin has struggled offensively this season but they will have advantages they can capitalize on in this game. Starting center Ethan Happ has an significant opportunity to exploit the smallish VT who’s only player over 6-7 is freshman Khadim Sy (11.4 mpg). Add to that, 6-8 Nigel Hayes and it’s obvious that the Badgers can have offensive success inside. Wisky has their own crew of long range shooting specialists in starting guard tandem Bronson Koenig (38.7%) and Zak Showalter (39.7%) plus reserve D’Mitrik Trice (43.9%). Inside out offense could flourish for Wisconsin in this matchup.

Getting outside of the conference is the best thing for a lot of teams at this time of the season since opponents lack familiarity with each other. In this game, Wisconsin enters as a money burner since the start of February going 4-8 ATS and they were 1-7 before closing on a 3-1 run. Virginia Tech has faced the rigors of the ACC all season long and as mentioned above, they continue to cover pointspreads despite being small, without one of their top players, and depth shy. Each team has some fundamental advantages here and with that being the case, recommendation goes to the hot team and taking the points.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Princeton Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

03.16.2017     05:58 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Princeton vs. Notre Dame -6.5 O/U 135
Recommendation: Notre Dame

Pointspreads tend to be very accurate by this time of the year.  Both the oddsmakers and the broader betting markets have a full seasons worth of data to punch into their computers.  The end result is that the numbers -- both sides and total -- are consistently right where they are supposed to be.

So when bettors are looking for an edge at this time of the year, they’re going to have to dig for information that is not factored into the numbers.  Given the full season results and stats for Princeton and Notre Dame, this pointspread is as accurate as it gets.  But when it comes to key tidbits of info?  Well, that’s where we can find an edge.

Princeton was forced to leave New Jersey on Monday due to the East Coast blizzard; more than 24 hours ahead of schedule.  That wouldn’t necessarily be a big deal, except for the fact that the Tigers played in the first ever Ivy League Championship Game on Sunday, creating a mad scramble for a team from a conference that has never had a conference tourney before.

Here are the pertinent quotes from Tigers Director of Basketball Operations Chris Mongilia, in his first year on the job at Princeton: “We've been booking buses and hotels. It's been putting a lot of pressure on us to get everything done and organized. But yeah, it's been crazy."

More from Mongilia, talking about how his players have to deal with midterm exams this week: “A lot of our guys are going to have to take exams proctored by a professor who is going to have to travel with us. They are going to have to take them in a conference room up at the hotel in Buffalo. The storm has definitely put a few bumps in our travel plans."

Princeton is an Ivy League school, and midterm exams are no joke. There’s a huge difference mentally between cramming and taking the tests before leaving town for the tourney versus bringing all their study materials with them and dealing with intense, high pressure exams in a hotel conference room in between practice time in the 48 hours leading up to tip-off.  The fact that this is an early start game only exacerbates the problem for the Tigers.  Plan and simple, I’m not expecting Princeton’s A-game here!
The broader betting markets pay no attention to intangible factors like this one – it’s all about the algorithms that generate pointspreads.  Hence the early $$ for Princeton, driving this line down to -6.5 as I write this, with the potential for this line to get driven down even further. That puts Notre Dame into the ‘bargain’ price range, worthy of a wager here.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago +105 at Montreal O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago

Two Original Six clubs clash in "La Metropole" tonight, as the Chicago Blackhawks open a three-game north-of-the-border road trip against the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs return home off of a four-game road trek of their own where they went 3-1 including a recent 4-1 victory over Edmonton. Montreal has won eight of its last 10 games overall and have recaptured the top spot in the Atlantic Division race with only 12 games remaining after tonight. The Canadiens however will have their hands full with Chicago, who is not only playing very sharp hockey as of late (13-3 streak, 8-1 on the road) but the Hawks have had the Habs' number over the years with six straight wins and a 8-0-2 mark in their last 10 meetings. Superstar Patrick Kane notched his 30th goal on Sunday in a big 4-2 victory over division rival Minnesota and goaltender Corey Crawford was sensational between the pipes, blocking 42 shots on net. The Montreal native has played very well against the club he watched as a kid, with a lifetime 6-0-2 mark versus the Habs. With the Blackhawks' solid 7-1 run as an underdog, we'll back the visitors tonight at a short plus price.

Valparaiso at Illinois -9 O/U 140
Recommendation: Illinois

Valparaiso accepted the last at-large bid into the NIT tournament as a 7th seed and will face second seed Illinois. The Crusaders return to the court for the first time since they scored just 12 points in the first half of an evental 43-41 loss to UW-Milwaukee in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament.

Illinois (18-14) enters the NIT in a unique spot as interim coach Jamall Walker take over after John Groce was fired over the weekend. The good news for Illinois is that the Crusaders' best player, Alec Peters, is out with an injury. Peters led Valpo with 23 ppg and 10 rpg. He's a Big Ten caliber player and one that is likely to have him name called in the NBA Draft. Not having to account for Peters gives an already solid Illinois defense a big edge.

Here's what Walker had to say about the situation: "It's the NIT," Walker said. " It's who's prepared and ready to play. Who's excited to play, who wants to play more than anything else." Walker says expects his players, especially the seniors, to go out with a bang. He compares his team to a stubborn fighter that just won't give up. "This team's been knocked down; our staff's been knocked down. I'll be honest I feel like we've done a good job with dusting ourselves off and moving straight forward. We're like that puncher that just keeps getting hit and knocked down and you're like 'man, just go down', and we refuse. And we're going to continue to until they run us out of here as a group and the seniors play their last game."

A lot of Walker said is not doubt "coach speak" but he's correct in saying the the Illini have showed the ability to fight. At one point the Illini were 14-12 and only 4-9 in Big Ten play but got themselves into the "bubble" conversation with four straight wins. If we get a decent effort from the home side, I feel that a blowout win awaits.
