NCAAF Gambling: In-depth stats show Oklahoma State's defense is underrated

11.30.2011     01:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 72.5

Interesting article on how underrated Oklahoma State's defense has been when you account for the fast paced nature of its games and the amount of offensive production opponents put up with the game out of reach.

According to generic NCAA stats, the Cowboys rank 107th in yards per game allowed (453.6) and 62nd in points per game allowed (27.3). Football Outsiders' S&P+ Ratings rank OSU's defense 19th nationally.

On 132 opponent non-garbage drives, Oklahoma State has surrendered 24 touchdowns (18.2 percent of drives) and 30.5 yards per drive. On 22 opponent garbage drives, the Cowboys have given up nine touchdowns (40.9 percent) and 41.5 yards per drive.

Oklahoma State's offensive pace influences its defensive raw stat performance, too. When the offense is producing at a high rate, the opponent offense has more drives (14.5 per game, fourth most in the nation). When we consider per-drive rates, the Cowboys are giving up only 1.5 points per opponent drive total, 20th in the country. Those numbers are even better when we break it down into primary scoring opportunities.
