FAU player: “A lot of times I feel like we lose the game before we step on the field" Head coach Howard Schnellenberger: "They know they are going into this game with a very small chance of winning, but it can give us a lesson in how to play top-of-the-line football...This is part of the schedule where we are not telling our players they are competitive and have an equal opportunity to win.”
FAU has been even less competitive than last year when asked to step up in class. Against Michigan State, South Florida and Texas, the Owls lost by an average of 25 ppg. This year, they've been outscored 85-3.
Schnellenberger deserves some credit for kick-starting the program but you can't help but feel that he's been
over the last few years (he's retiring after this season). FAU has declined each of the last four years (8-5, 7-6, 5-7, 4-8) and even though Sun Belt play hasn't started, this has all the makings of a bottom feeder team.
There doesn't appear to be a lot of adjustment from the oddsmakers as FAU opened +31.5 at Auburn. The Owls were +32 at Michigan (lost 44-0) and +34 at Florida (lost 41-3). Auburn has seen some action with the current line up to -33.5. FAU is now 1-8-1 ATS vs. BCS conferences since 2008.
