NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Charlotte Hornets at Sacramento Kings

Charlotte at Sacramento +4 O/U 207.5
Recommendation: Sacramento

The Kings traded DeMarcus Cousins at the trading deadline, a trade that was widely criticized by every talking head in the world, including myself.  The betting markets weren’t sleeping on this trade!

Suddenly a Kings team that was power rated as a middle of the pack squad was downgraded to a team that was every bit as bad as the worst team in the NBA, the 9-48 Nets.   That’s why the Kings were seven point home underdogs against Denver on Thursday – a game they won by 16.  But the markets didn’t believe what they saw in that game, explaining why they are four point home underdogs against Charlotte today…with the early money rolling in on the Hornets!

First, Sacramento is not as bad as the markets seem to think they are.  The Cousins distraction is gone.  They’ve got a veteran backcourt duo in Darrin Collison and Ty Lawson – not rookies or scrubs handling the basketball.  The Kosta Koufos/Willie Cauley-Stein duo combined for 37 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks in that game, filling Cousins shoes impeccably.  And with new additions Buddy Hield and Tyreke Evans offering sharpshooter production off the bench, this Kings team is not hopelessly overmatched in every game, the way Brooklyn is.  Sacramento offers legitimate value right now, plain and simple.

Charlotte lost ten of 11 games heading into the All-Star Break.  They came out of the break playing with a sense of real purpose, leading by 15 in the fourth quarter at Detroit.  But when the Pistons went into ‘crunch time’ mode, the Hornets were severely outclassed on both ends of the court; a team that has absolutely lost their confidence in end game situations.  Plan and simple – Charlotte can’t be laying!  Take the Kings.

NBA Gambling: Betting results following DeMarcus Cousins trade

02.24.2017     08:49 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We got to thinking -- wouldn't it be funny, interesting and perhaps logical if the Sacramento Kings got better following the departure of DeMarcus Cousins and the New Orleans Pelicans got worse? We admit, last night's results -- Kings won outright as +7 dogs and the Pelicans got housed by the Rockets -- helped get us to this theory. Needless to say, this deserves to be tracked the remainder of the regular season. We present to you, the Boogie Tracker.

Houston -3.5 at New Orleans O/U 227
Recommendation: Houston

New Orleans may end up being a force to be reckoned with in a month or two.  But tonight’s game against Houston is fraught with problems, leaving Alvin Gentry’s squad as a ‘bet-against’ squad as they try to work DeMarcus Cousins into the flow.

Cousins quote speaks volumes.  “I think it's a great opportunity. I think we both can learn from one another. Our games compliment one another. Being together, I think, is going to make our jobs a lot easier. I'm excited for the opportunity. I think we can wreak havoc on this league. Will it happen overnight? Probably not. But the potential is scary.”  Note his words: ‘Will it happen overnight?  Probably not!”

Alvin Gentry concurs: "It's just a matter of putting it all together and, obviously, there's a chemistry thing. But I don't see that as a problem at all I think their (Davis' and Cousins') games are very complementary and it gives us an opportunity. Also, one of the areas we've struggled in is the rebounding part of it, especially giving up offensive rebounds. I think, honestly, with (Cousins') size and Omri's size, we can put a really big team out there on the floor.”

A ‘really big team out there’ is a terrible matchup against the high octane, wing based offense that the Rockets bring to the table.  Stretch 4 Ryan Anderson: “I think this team has an advantage against any group. Bigs just aren't used to guarding this kind of offense that we have, really stretching the court. I don't see how two bigs will have an advantage against a team like us, where we really run the floor, we really try to make it a point to shoot as many 3s as possible. Threes are (worth) more than twos."

And Mike D’Antoni’s quote screams ‘bet-on’ in the first game after the All Star Break: “It's good. You get recharged. Guys are ready to roll. We have 24 games left. We need to make a nice run down the stretch. We have to do better. I think we've fallen off a bit of late. We have to get back our juices and embrace who we are. We know who we. We know how we have to play.”

Let’s not forget about the key addition for Houston.  While Lou Williams doesn’t move the needle the way that Boogie Cousins does, Williams just happens to be the single most productive scorer in the NBA off the bench this year, giving Houston improved depth on the wing.  Facing a Pelicans roster that just lost key rotation players Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and Buddy Hield, expect the Rockets to roll to a comfortable road victory.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Bruins at Los Angeles Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston at Los Angeles -140 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

The Boston Bruins have made a point to play with more speed, pace and tempo in their game since Bruce Cassidy took over as interim head coach . Boston has gone 4-1 in the first five games under Cassidy and they have been trending over the total as well at an 8-2 O/U clip in their last 10 games. LA is not your typical "over" team as the Kings are a below average offensive team with a good defense and solid enough goaltending being provided to them by Peter Budaj who has filled in admirably for injured Jonathan Quick. Los Angeles has scored just four goals in its last three games combined but the Kings should have a good chance to get the offense on track tonight against Boston’s backup goalie Anton Khudobin who will get the start on the second night of back-to-back games. The over is 4-0-1 in Khudobin’s last five starts in net and he has mediocre numbers with a 3.05 GAA and .888 save percentage. On the flip side, Boston has scored 3+ goals in nine of its last 10 and for as good as Budaj has been all season, he hasn’t been nearly as sharp or effective of late with 3+ goals allowed in five of his last seven starts in between the pipes. I’ll lay a moderate -135 price to bet this game over the total of 5.

NBA Gambling Update: Paul downgraded to out vs. Warriors

02.23.2017     10:27 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

As just like that, Chris Paul has been downgraded to "out" for tonight's game. The Clippers are in a back-to-back spot with a home game against the Spurs tomorrow night. Holding Paul out suggests he'll be in the lineup on Friday.

NBA Gambling Alert: Clippers' Paul may play vs. Warriors

02.23.2017     08:32 AM     View Original Blog
Los Angeles' Chris Paul could make his Ali-like return to the hardwood tonight as the Clippers travel to Golden State (-12.5). Paul recently missed 13 games due to a thumb injury that required surgery. Doctors have reportedly cleared him to play. The Clippers are 27-9 SU, 19-17 ATS when Paul plays and 8-12 SU and 10-10 without him in the lineup.

"He looked great. He went through the whole practice [on Tuesday]. You know, so it was good. Really good," Rivers said before practice on Wednesday. "He could play tomorrow. I mean, I can't tell you if he will or not, but he's been cleared medically. But we just want to make sure that he's comfortable playing."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: James Madison Dukes at Drexel Dragons

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
James Madison at Drexel -1.5 O/U 139
Recommendation: Over

All 10 teams make the Colonial tournament which doesn't place a lot of meaning on tonight's James Madison-Drexel game. The Dukes have an outside shot at avoiding a first round game but need help while the Dragons appear headed for the 10th seed. Under first-year head coach Zach Spiker, Drexel has attempted to play at a faster pace. The results have been hit and mostly miss but compared to last year, pace and offensive efficiency is up. The Dragons have consistently played games well over tonight's total of 139 but not of late. In their last three games, no team hit the 70-point mark as all three went under the total. In fact, Drexel has gone under the total in five straight. As for the last three, Towson and Elon sport the CAA's top two defensive efficiency marks and Delaware is super-slow and likes to play zone. The average game score in those games was 130 but the pace was by no means slow (69.7 possessions avg.). James Madison has played slow for much of the season but isn't afraid to trade buckets with the faster teams in the CAA. In four games against up-tempo UNC Wilmington and William & Mary, the average game score was 157.8 ppg and average pace 70 possessions. UNC and W&M are far better offensively compared to Drexel but also a bit more proficient on the defensive end. The average total during Drexel's five-game run of unders was 155. Tonight's is 139. Decent value and a loose atmosphere puts us on the over.

Texas A&M at Arkansas -3.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

In the first meeting between Arkansas and Texas A&M in College Station, the Aggies were able to control tempo (64 possessions) but still lost 62-60. The venue switches to Bud Walton Arena where the Razorbacks tend to control pace and score at a higher clip. A&M coach Billy Kennedy on tonight's game: "We’re going to need to score,” he said. "You get opportunities to score in transition against them. We need to make good decisions and put the ball in the hole. You’ve got to take good shots against them. If the game is in the 80s or 90s we’re in trouble.” They'll have their chances tonight as Arkansas ranks last in the SEC in strength of schedule according to Ken Pom and yet still own the league’s third-worst defensive efficiency. A&M hasn't been shy about putting up points on some of the SEC's "all offense, no defense" teams. Against LSU, the Aggies hung 92 and 85. Against Ole Miss they hit for 80. And last time out against Auburn, they notched 81. Also note that the first meeting had 102 points with just under 10 minutes to play and both teams went ice cold. Market with the assist here as the opener was bet down from 147 to a very playable 144.5.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Illinois Fighting Illini

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Northwestern -1.5 at Illinois O/U 135
Recommendation: Northwestern

Second meeting of this in-state battle between Northwestern and Illinois. In the previous contest, two weeks ago in Evanston, the Illini walked out with a 68-61 victory so expect the NU group to be revenge-minded tonight. The Wildcats were minus star guard Scottie Lindsey in the initial matchup but he returned to the starting lineup Saturday and played 24 minutes. With Lindsay back, not only does Northwestern have the leading scorer (15.0 ppg) on the floor tonight but his presence also boosts their defense significantly. Lindsay combined with Vic Law gives NU arguably the best set of wing defenders in the Big Ten which should make life a bit tougher on the Fighting Illini’s perimeter shooting this time around.

Northwestern kept Illinois interior threat Maverick Morgan pretty quiet in the initial meeting holding him to 5-of-12 shooting and only two free throw attempts but the Illini nailed 42% (8-of-21) from three-point land. Have to believe Lindsay’s presence will help quiet the Illinois guards and wing players who accounted for 56 points last time.

While the defense should be in better position to allow a more season like FG% (Northwestern allows just 39.5% from the field this year), the offense is likely to benefit as well with a third scoring threat on the floor. Game #1 saw Vic Law and Brian McIntosh forced to carry the burden but Lindsay will loosen things up since he’ll demand defensive attention as well. Saturday’s home scare versus Rutgers which ended in a Northwestern 69-65 late come from behind win, probably worked out the kinks of reintegrating Lindsay so look for the offense to be more fluid tonight.

We’re at that stage of the season where teams that are unsure of the NCAA Tournament status must win their winnable games. This is one of those for Chris Collins’ crew which is staring right down the barrel of a three game regular season finish that includes at Indiana plus home vs. Michigan and Purdue. Winning this one is ultra-important for the ‘Cats and the situation suggests they’ll be focused. That plus the return of Lindsay is enough to lay the short favorite price.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings

NY Islanders -110 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: New York

Two Eastern Conference clubs heading in different directions as Detroit hosts the New York Islanders. These two clubs met in Motown back on February 3 with the Wings picking up the 5-4 victory and giving Islanders interim head coach Doug Weight his first regulation loss since taking over the job. Since that contest, the Isles have gone 5-3-1 overall, including a 3-1-1 run as favorites, while Detroit is 3-5-1 in its last nine games and have lost seven of their last nine at Joe Louis Arena. In addition, this time around, the Red Wings are missing scoring winger Gustav Nyquist, who is still serving his six-game suspension for a high stick. The 27-year-old Swedish native picked up an assist in 18 minutes of playing time last meeting. And defensemen Mike Green and Johnathan Ericsson, who both log in solid minutes on the blue-line, are now out with injuries; the latter, Ericsson, is done for the year with a broken wrist. New York is still very much alive in the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference while the Red Wings will miss the postseason for the first time in a quarter-century as they will most likely finish the season as the worst team in the Eastern Conference. Good price to step in with the road squad.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bettors need to know mid-major conference tournaments

02.21.2017     10:11 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Many mid-major college basketball conferences will tip off their respective tournaments next week. Understanding the format of these tournaments is imperative to betting the final week of the regular season. You optimally want to find teams with something to play for in terms of seeding, especially if the opponent has little to nothing to play for. I will examine several leagues and how the race for seeding currently stands.

Colonial  - The CAA Tournament will be held in Charleston, South Carolina. The top six seeds will go straight through to the quarterfinals. Prior to that, there will be two first round games pitting the no. 7 vs. no. 10 and no. 8 vs. no. 9 with the two winners advancing.  UNC Wilmington, Charleston, Towson, Elon, William & Mary and Northeastern are currently make up the top six. Northeastern has a slim one-game lead over James Madison and a two-game lead over Hofstra and Delaware. Northeastern has a tough final two games as they face Elon and UNC Wilmington on the road while James Madison plays the more manageable slate hosting Drexel and Hofstra. The race for the final first round bye is very much alive.

Horizon - This year’s tournament will be played at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Same format as the CAA with first round 7 vs. 10 and 8 vs. 9 matchups. The top six seeds are nearly set with Valparaiso, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay, Northern Kentucky and UIC. Valpo and Oakland are still in a tight battle for the top seed. Note that last year was the first time since 2002 the Horizon went with a neutral site tournament. The league got the no. 1 vs. no. 4 and no. 2 vs. no 3 semifinal matchups but upsets in all three games sent no. 4 seed Green Bay to the dance.

MAAC - As usual, the Tournament will be held at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY which is the home court of the Siena Saints. All 11 teams are in the tournament but the top five seeds get first round byes. There will be a trio of first round games with no. 6 vs. no. 11, no. 7 vs. no. 10 and no. 8 vs. no. 9. The winners of those games respectively will face top seed Monmouth, and whoever earns the second and third seeds. Monmouth, St. Peter’s, Iona, Siena and Canisius hold the top five seeds right now with a major battle on tap for the fifth and final bye. Fairfield is currently in sixth and trails Canisius by just a half game. The Stags have a game in hand as they play three games the final week: vs. Monmouth (already clinched top seed), at Canisius on Friday and then at Niagara on Sunday.

Missouri Valley - The tournament will take place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri starting on March 2. Same format as the Horizon League and CAA with the top six seeds going straight to the quarterfinals. Wichita State and Illinois State are tied for the top seed going into this week’s action so the Shockers and Redbirds should have full motivation to win in their remaining two games. Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Loyola Chicago and Missouri State have the third through sixth seeds right now. Two games separate that grouping and the remaining four teams.

Ohio Valley - Tournament will be held in Nashville, Tennessee. The format here is a bit different as only the top eight teams qualify. The top two seeds receive double byes to the semifinals. The third and fourth seeds get a single bye. The remaining four teams play first round games. Belmont, Morehead State, Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, Murray State, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee State appear locked in as the top eight with only seeding left to be determined. However, five teams are currently tied with 8-6 conference records so the race for at least a single bye is still TBA.

So-Con - Asheville, North Carolina will host the Southern Conference tournament. The no. 1 through no. 6 seeds automatically move to the quarterfinals format with no. 7 through no. 10 playing in the first round. Samford and Mercer are tied for that sixth and final bye slot. Samford plays fourth place Chattanooga followed by ninth place The Citadel at home. Mercer hosts third place UNC Greensboro and then goes on the road to face Chattanooga.

Summit - The top eight teams qualify for the Summit League tournament being played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Oral Roberts appears to be team on the outside looking in as the ninth and last place team. North Dakota State and South Dakota are locked in a heated battle for the top seed with identical 10-4 conference records heading into their final two games.

WCC - The WCC Tournament is once again at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Same format as the So-Con with 1-6 on a bye and 7-10 playing first round contests. Gonzaga and St. Mary’s have locked up the top two seeds. The fiercest competition is a three-way battle between Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Pepperdine for the sixth seed. The Lions have a one-game edge over the Toreros and Waves for that position entering the final two games of the regular season.

Iowa State at Texas Tech -1.5 O/U 144
Recommendation: Under

On Saturday, we came in with a free play on Texas Tech-West Virginia under 143. It played out just as projected but double overtime kept us from cashing an easy ticket. At the end of regulation it was tied 64-64. And at the end of the first overtime it was tied 70-70. I'll attempt to win some of my money back today with another play on the Red Raiders under the total as they play host to Iowa State. The Big XII is very well respected this year but at 5-9 with four games to go, TTU has a lot more work to do. In the first meeting between these two teams in Ames, the Red Raiders were able to control the game and more importantly the pace for nearly a full 40 minutes. They led by as many as 14 in the second half but went cold late as Iowa State came from behind to win 63-56. It was ISU's slowest game of the season (61 possessions) and I think Tech will employ a similar type of approach tonight. First meeting closed 140.5 and not much of anything has changed. Feel like the importance of this one for the home side helps in keeping the pace and hopefully scoring lower than expected.

Texas Tech at West Virginia -11.5 O/U 143
Recommendation: Under

Texas Tech and West Virginia hook up for the second time after the Red Raiders won in Lubbock, 77-76 in overtime. Worth noting that even with the extra frame, TTU turned the ball over only 14 times and the game featured a relatively slow 70 possessions. Speaking of overtime, Huggy's bunch limps into this one after melting down in Lawrence. The Mountaineers were up 15 with three minutes to go and found a way to lose. Rather than focus on the three minutes of bad basketball, I came away impressed as WVU completely outplayed Kansas for nearly the entire game -- and did so too from start to finish in the first meeting. This is a good squad and one that is poised to come with a big effort today. Texas Tech has shown a very strong home/road dichotomy when it comes to scoring and pace. In six league road games, the Red Raiders are averaging only 63.1 ppg. Four of those six went under the total. And Tech's last three road games averaged only 123 points. First-year head coach Chris Beard is noted for playing it tight and controlling tempo. Also note that the Red Raiders are second in the Big XII in turnover rate -- a bunch of upperclassmen who have faced "Press Virginia" multiple times. West Virginia games that go over generally feature a lot of turnovers, fouls, and free throws. I think we'll see a more controlled environment today. Play it under.

NBA Handicapping: Regular Season Over/Under Wins Update

02.17.2017     10:29 AM     Printer Friendly

Let's take a quick look at the NBA's regular season over/under wins. We projected each team's outcome based on current winning percentage. Per usual, they are a few teams that are really close to officially cashing tickets. Houston is four wins from going over. Last year, Portland had 27 wins at the break which was where it was lined headed into the season. This year, with a record of 23-33, the Trail Blazers are a lock to go under 45.5. Similar situation for Minnesota who at 22-35 has no shot at topping 42 victories.

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers

Washington at Indiana +3 O/U 215
Recommendation: Indiana

I haven’t bet against Washington since the calendar turned to 2017.  But this is the spot to fade the Wizards, and the markets seem to be convinced that the Pacers are going to go into the All-Star Break in the midst of a six-game skid.  That gives us ample value to back Indiana as a home dog this evening.

In theory, this is a great spot for Washington.  The Pacers have lost five straight, including a defensive no-show in Cleveland last night; the fifth straight game that Indiana has allowed at least 110 points.  Meanwhile, the Wizards are rested and ready – they’ve only played once since last Friday, a blowout win over OKC that was garbage time by the middle of the third quarter.

But as we clearly saw last night with the Houston-Miami game, an extended rest BEFORE the All-Star Break is not necessarily a good thing – teams lose their focus.  The Rockets were in the exact same spot at the Wizards – coming off a rare, extended rest, having played only one game since last week, a blowout win.  Washington has been as focused as any team in the league for the better part of the last two months.  I’m not convinced in the slightest that this layoff is going to help them bring their A-game tonight.

The Pacers should get Lavoy Allen back in the lineup tonight, a big return addition considering he’s been starting since Thaddeus Young got hurt at the start of this losing streak.  And much of the losing streak can be blamed on quality opposition – they’ve lost twice to Cleveland, once to San Antonio and once on the Wizards powerful home floor, no shame in any of those defeats.  The only ‘bad’ loss during this entire stretch came at home against Milwaukee, and that can only be described as one of those nights – the Bucks hit 55% from three point range, nailing 17 shots from downtown.

When these two teams played at the Verizon Center in DC last week there was no separation whatsoever, a tight game throughout.  Indiana covered the spread despite a dismal 4-21 shooting effort from three point range.  In fact, all three previous meetings between these two teams this year were tight, down-to-the-wire affairs; a series where we’re better off taking points, not laying them!

College Basketball Betting Free Play: North Dakota Hawks at Idaho State Bengals

North Dakota -4.5 at Idaho State O/U 153.5
Recommendation: Over

While doing research on today's college basketball card, I came across an article on Idaho State and its struggles against North Dakota which was referred to as a "nightmare matchup." The results certainly bear that out as UND has won the last four matchups by scores of 89-64, 84-76, 76-60, and 84-49. Now, the spot for Hawks tonight is not a good one. They've won six of seven, just wrapped up a three-game homestand, and have a showdown at first place Weber State on Saturday. Bad matchup but less than ideal spot has me more interested in the total. Idaho State sports one of the worst defenses in the Big Sky as it allows 57.2 eFG% and 1.14 points per possession. And when asked to face the three top offenses in the league, each team essentially scored at will. Eastern Washington hung 92 points on 74 possessions. Weber State scored 85 and 96 on two 73-possession games. And as previously mentioned, North Dakota needed only 71 possession to net 89 points. It's mid-February, you are 3-9 in league play, and guaranteed a berth to the conference tournament...a defensive renaissance seems unlikely. The good news is, the Bengals have found way to score on their home court with an average of just shy of 80 ppg in five games in Pocatello. And like a lot of Big Sky schools, North Dakota shows a big home/road split defensively: 69.8 ppg allowed at home, 81.5 ppg allowed on the highway. Price is decent enough to come in with a play on the over.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Buffalo Sabres

Colorado at Buffalo -170 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

The Colorado Avalanche are dead last in the NHL in goals allowed. Over their last four games, they’ve surrendered 3+ goals in each contest and 16 total during that span. There is no rhyme or reason for any game involving this team and their woeful defense and goaltending to have a total as low as 5. Colorado does however have the offensive weapons to find the back of the net even though those players, namely Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog, continue to be talked about in trade rumors as the league's trade deadline looms. Of course on the other side, Buffalo is far from an offensive juggernaut, ranking 25th in the league at 2.5 gpg. But there's been a recent uptick in production as the Sabres have netted three or more goals in four of their last seven games. In the last three games in which Buffalo had a lined total of 5, the final scores ended up 5-4, 5-2 and 4-2. Sabres center Ryan O’Reilly has been a major catalyst in the team’s recent offensive surge with three goals in his last seven games. The recent series history between the Avalanche and Sabres has been relatively high scoring: 7-1-1 O/U overall and 4-1-1 O/U in Buffalo. Value outweighs the juice as we fire on the over.
