MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Nationals at Houston Astros

08.22.2017     08:38 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Roark) at Houston (Morton)
Recommendation: See analysis

I have some concerns about Washington's Tanner Roark heading into arguably his toughest start of the season with a trip to Houston. Roark's velocity spiked a few weeks back but his last two outings have seen a sudden decrease (91 mph), something he even noted to the media. His recent results look solid with three straight quality starts but the numbers tell a different story with a dismal 11-10 K-to-BB ratio, four home runs allowed, and a very friendly .167 BABIP. For the season, Roark has performed like a below average NL pitcher (4.46 xFIP) and with diminished velocity, he must now navigate an elite AL lineup on the road. Not having Carlos Correa in the lineup has resulted in a decrease in Houston’s offensive production but they are still averaging a solid 4.8 runs without him.

As a team, the Nationals rank fourth in MLB with a 104 wRC+ vs. righties but without Bryce Harper's ridiculous .682 SLG, 1.126 OPS, and .350 ISO, it's a far weaker lineup. In eight games without Harper, the Nationals are averaging only 3.8 runs per game and didn't face one starting pitcher during that span that you'd consider above league average. They'll face one tonight in Charlie Morton who has enjoyed a huge uptick in velocity this season. Two years removed from throwing 92-93 mph, Morton has consistently been at 94-96 while featuring one of MLB's highest rate curveballs. Morton misses bats, keeps the ball on ground, and has allowed only one home run over his last five starts.

Unfortunately the price is well reflective of Harper's absence and Morton's advantage over Roark. I plan on waiting to see if I can get a cheaper number later today; something in the range of -165. In the meantime, I would look for any anti-Roark, pro-Houston props, most notably a play on Houston over the team total of 5.

College Football Handicapping: LSU wants to utilize up-tempo attack

08.22.2017     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Initial reports indicate that LSU will play at a much faster pace under new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Canada was last seen guiding Pitt's offense to over 40 ppg. Interestingly enough, both Pitt and LSU averaged exactly 6.71 yards per play last season which ranked 13th nationally. The Tigers play host to BYU in Week 1. The total was played up from a Les Miles-esque 44.5 to 47.5.

“If you always go fast, they get used to that,” Canada said at a coaches clinic in the spring. “If you always go slow, they get used to that. So we change the tempo.”

“We’re just getting the ball off faster now,” Malone said. “Hopefully putting a lot more points up and getting the defense back on their heels. We’ve been doing it during scrimmages, and it’s been helping. Hopefully we can transition to a game.” [:END-QUOTE:

College Football Gambling: It doesn't look promising for the Nevada Wolf Pack this season

08.22.2017     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It will almost assuredly be a long season in Reno with Nevada attempting to overhaul the program. Brian Polian got the Wolf Pack to the postseason twice but after last year's 5-7 mark they were statistically far worse the university decided to go in a different direction. Oddly, they brought in 54-year-old longtime assistant Jay Norvell. Hal Mumme’s son, Matt, was named offensive coordinator. He was the head coach (12-20) at a DIII school and is expected to install some sort of pass happy offense. Adding to the likelihood of struggles is the departure of running back James Butler (1,336 yards; transferred to Iowa) and the desire to play two quarterbacks...in a pass-first offense. No surprise to see Nevada catching +24 at Northwestern in Week 1.

“The biggest thing that training camp has shown us is that I think we have two really good quarterbacks in David and Ty Gangi,” Norvell said after Saturday's scrimmage. “I think our team has confidence in both of them. Then I really like the young kids who are coming on in (Kaymen Cureton) and Griffin Dahn and Cristian (Solano). We’re really pleased with that position. We have a lot of competition. I really think we’re going to end up having multiple guys play this year.”

College Football Betting News: Utah State will employ faster tempo

08.18.2017     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Changes coming at Utah State with David Yost taking over as offensive coordinator. Yost has ties to Oregon as well as Mike Leach so it's logical to assume there will be an uptick in pace. The Aggies ran only 66 plays per game last season and ranked near the bottom in virtually every offensive category within the Mountain West.

“There are times (with up-tempo offenses) when it’s nine seconds later and your defense is back on the field,” he said. “That is not what we want to do. That is not our goal as the offense.”

"In the past we've done a lot of sideways passing and not getting up the field as much as we want,” Myers said. “We're going to spread the offense and go vertical a lot.”

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Detroit Lions not worried about potential injuries

08.18.2017     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While numerous teams have voiced their opinions on keeping guys healthy during the preseason, the Detroit Lions are taking a "no fear" approach. The Lions beat Indianapolis 24-10 in Week 1 and are currently -5.5 home chalk for Saturday's game vs. the New York Jets.

“You can’t play this game that way,” he said of playing scared. “You can’t coach it that way. You can’t play it that way. If that’s all you think about is injuries ... they aren’t pheasants under glass. They have to get out and they have to play the game.”

“You have children? (to which the reporter responded no). One of these days you’ll understand that part of it. But nevertheless, you wouldn’t let your kids go outside if you’re afraid of everything. You know what I mean?”

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins

08.17.2017     01:18 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore +2.5 at Miami O/U 37.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Miami Dolphins have no business as favorites in this ballgame. One of the biggest ‘red flags’ in preseason for any team – let alone a favorite – is when a coach starts whining about his injury situation. That’s exactly what Adam Gase has done this week. When a coach can’t handle any more injuries, the entire team seems to feel it, and you tend to see significantly less intensity for a meaningless August game. And Gase has been dealing with the cumulative effect of the injury bug all week, even cancelling practice on Tuesday to go through a ‘no pads’ walk through.

Gase has every reason to whine considering the state of his offensive line right now. Jay Cutler is supposed to get his first game action with Miami here, but how long he’ll be on the field is very much in question, especially given the state of the Dolphins offensive line right now. Center Mike Pouncey (hip) isn’t likely to play. Right tackle Ja’Wuan James (shoulder), has missed practices all week as has guard-center Kraig Urbik (back). Guard Ted Larson (biceps) is already out.

This quote speaks volumes, when it comes to ‘coach speak’: Gase:“Coach Harbaugh always has his crew ready to go very early, and they’re going to be looking to work on certain things. and for us to be able to play them, that’s good for our guys.” Read between the lines here. Gase wants competition. He couldn’t care less about winning.

Baltimore has been hit by the injury bug as well, but John Harbaugh has taken a different approach to the Ravens injury woes. Ozzie Newsome is one of the best GM’s in football, and Baltimore routinely has better depth than the vast majority of NFL teams. Harbaugh sat most of the Ravens veterans last week, but he’s said that he expects a number of those vets to suit up and play tonight.

And Harbaugh is clearly a ‘bet-on’ coach in August. Baltimore went 4-0 SU in the preseason last year, winning SU as an underdog twice; the second time in three years that the Ravens went 4-0 in August both SU and ATS. They won SU as an underdog in their preseason debut against Washington last week; worth backing again even without starting QB Joe Flacco expected to play. Live dog here!

College Football Betting News: USF tries to maintain offensive success despite coaching change

08.17.2017     10:04 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Charlie Strong taking over at USF for Willie Taggart, bettors are curious as to what changes will take place. Under Taggart, the Bulls averaged over 500 ypg and 40 ppg last season. One of Strong's main issues at Texas was that the offense never had an identity. Offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, who Strong brought over from Texas, has a pedigree of playing up-tempo having coached at Bowling Green and Tulsa prior to his one season in Austin. The Longhorns played much faster under Gilbert (83.3 plays per game) than they did (65.1 plays per game) in 2015.

College Football Handicapping: Cal defense should improve under Wilcox and DeRuyter

08.17.2017     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's a massive cleanup needed in Berkeley after Cal cut ties with Sonny Dykes and brought in longtime and well respected defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. Wilcox's first job is to fix a defense that was one of the nation's worst units (42.6 ppg allowed last season). Under Dykes, opposing teams scored 40 or more 55 percent of the time. Wilcox hired former Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter to serve as defensive coordinator. In two seasons as DC at Texas A&M, the Aggies ranked inside the top 20 nationally in yards per play allowed. And during his first season as head coach at Fresno State, DeRuyter's stop unit ranked second in the Mountain West in yards per game (338.5) and play (4.73) allowed. If anything, it's clear that this year's squad will put a bit more stock into stopping the opposition.

“We weren’t used to the head coach being in defensive meetings,” senior cornerback Darius Allensworth said. “Maybe a couple times, but Coach Wilcox pokes his head in the DBs room almost every day.”

“I love Coach Dykes to death,” added senior defensive lineman James Looney, “but I just like the aggressiveness of having a (head coach who was a) defensive coach.”

NFL Preseason Gambling: Minnesota's Zimmer hints he may play it safe with starters

08.17.2017     09:50 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer sounds as if he's going to side towards being cautious with his starters the remainder of the preseason. The Vikings are a well documented 12-2 ATS under Zimmer. The team plays at Seattle on Friday.

“You know, I’m honestly really weighing that a lot,” Zimmer said, via the Star Tribune. “I happened to have the game on in the background and I saw two defensive starters go out for the season [this weekend]. And I saw one team had five guys injured.”

“It’s a really fine line,” he added. “My concern is all right, how much do we weigh the guys that I really know — I have an idea if they can play — just getting them in there to play and the backfire to that is really, are they going to be in shape for Sept. 11? That’s something I’m contemplating right now.”

NFL Preseason Betting: Eagles look to run ball more vs. Bills

08.17.2017     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sounds like the Philadelphia Eagles will focus more on the run for tonight's game vs. Buffalo after chucking it around 54 times in Week 1. The Eagles are currently -4 home chalk with the total played down from 40 to 38.5.

"It's unfortunate the way the game kind of took off," said Pederson. "I really feel like we've got a good offensive line that can handle that with the backs we have. Hopefully, (the run game) is something we can focus on Thursday night (against Buffalo)."

College Football Gambling: Pitt will try to revive defense with youth

08.15.2017     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pitt's defense was probably a shade better than the 35.2 ppg it surrendered last season but make no mistake, there were issues. One of the biggest was coughing up big plays. The Panthers allowed 24 plays of 40 yards or longer which ranked 121st nationally. Third-year had coach Pat Narduzzi will attempt to shore up a unit that is projected to be extremely young this season. Pitt manages to avoid Clemson and Florida State but plenty of challenges await. After opening with Youngstown State, the Panthers travel to Penn State, home vs. Oklahoma State, and then open up ACC play at Georgia Tech. Those three squads averaged 39.3 ppg in last year's meetings. Pitt squeeked out two of the three but also went 0-3 ATS.

If you listen to coach Pat Narduzzi and defensive coordinator Josh Conklin, there are 13 young players who they believe are practicing well enough or will eventually compete for spots on the two-deep depth chart. Nine of the 13 are freshmen or redshirt freshmen, nine are shy of their 20th birthday and six are serious contenders to open in the starting lineup Sept. 2 against Youngstown State.

College Football Handicapping: Virginia Tech goes with redshirt frosh quarterback

08.15.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech has named redshirt freshman Josh Jackson its Week 1 starter. Under first-year head coach Justin Fuente, last year's starter, Jerod Evans, broke a handful of single-season school records as the Hokies finished 10-4. Tech is currently a -4.5/-5 favorite for its season opener against West Virginia. The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

"Day in and day out he's been more consistent in terms of the things that we've talked about, the three criteria we've talked about before this camp started, and what we are looking for. Taking care of the football, expected outcomes, and how we feel. And in those three categories we feel the best about Josh," Fuente said.

"His execution, his level of understanding the offense, his ability to get out there play after play, and do exactly what he's supposed to do and protecting the football. He showed us that that's really important to him and those factors combined altogether," added Hokies offensive coordinator Brad Cornelson.

College Football Handicapping: UConn names JC transfer starting quarterback

08.14.2017     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn has never been a destination school for quarterbacks. Over the last seven seasons, only once did the Huskies rank inside the top 100 (2015, 88th) in terms of team passer rating. In his second term in Storrs, head coach Randy Edsall is attempting to change that pattern with JuCo transfer David Pindell. Pindell was recently named the team's starter. It's perhaps a good sign considering senior Bryant Shirreffs started the last two seasons. Edsall's teams however have never been prolific passing the football. During his five years at Maryland, the Terps' average team passer ranking was 92nd nationally.

"Just saw the way he's come in and handled the offense," Edsall said. "He's still got work to do, as they all do, but I think it was time. We sat down with the offensive staff and talked and evaluated all the things we had seen. We made the decision, and now we're going to move forward."

College Football Betting News: Florida suspends seven for season opener vs. Michigan

08.14.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the disadvantages of playing an actual game in Week 1 and not some patsy from the Sun Belt is that there's always a chance for some good old fashion offseason suspensions. Florida announced that it will be without the services of seven players including the team's top offensive weapon, wide receiver, Antonio Callaway. Frustrating situation for summer bettors as there was a lot of pro-Gator money. Michigan opened -5 and was bet down to -2.5 before sportsbooks took the game off the board.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement, though he did not elaborate on the reason for their suspension. "Action has been taken they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

Ridiculously large Mayweather bet turns out to be marketing ploy

Mayweather v. McGregor. The Maloof Bros. An $880K bet. And a potion that is supposed to cure hangovers. Seriously, WTF?

“We were flooded with McGregor money so I was more than happy to take the bet,” South Point sports book director Chris Andrews said Saturday. “We still need Mayweather.”

“We went and sat down with (South Point owner) Michael Gaughan and made the bet. But we came back and thought to ourselves, ‘The money is nice but it can do so much good for so many other people so why don’t we take all the winnings and donate it to charity,’ ” he said. “If he wins, we’ll donate the $160,000 to charities in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, where our sister Adrienne lives.

“It will be a nice gesture for the community and get everybody rooting for Floyd, who’s a hometown kid.”
