MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds

06.22.2018     10:18 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Quintana) at Cincinnati (Castillo) +130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Cincinnati

Don’t look yet, but the Cincinnati Reds are playing their best baseball of the season right now. Cinci has won four straight including yesterday’s series opener against the Cubs, while taking seven of their last nine overall. It’s a fairly significant uptick for a team that had been playing miserable baseball for extended stretches this season; a squad that was 22-43 prior to their current hot streak. And when a team goes 22-43 over a span of more than two months, the betting markets have done what betting markets do – dropping Cincinnati like a rock. This current Reds uptick has come with Cinci at their most ‘value laden’ price points of the entire season, including yesterday’s +165 cash.

Similar to the team behind him, Cinci starter Luis Castillo got off to a very rough start this year. Castillo finished April with a 7.85 ERA after a string of five consecutive ugly road outings. Since that time, basically every stat that gets tracked has improved for the Reds second year starter. He struck out ten Cardinals in his last home game. The Reds bullpen behind him is in solid shape; rested & ready following a day off and three straight quality starts.

The Cubs continue to play mediocre baseball, and their pricetag hasn’t declined at all. That’s why they’re 12 games Over .500 right now, yet still in negative ROI territory; costing their backers money. And while Jose Quintana dominated this Reds lineup back in April, Cinci is averaging a half run higher per game against opposing southpaws. Plus Quintana isn’t eating up innings of late, completing the sixth only twice in his last five trips to the hill. With closer Brandon Morrow on the DL, the Cubs bullpen is more than a little bit dicey right now, offering the potential for late inning shenanigans should we need them.

To make matters even worse for Chicago, their lineup isn’t hitting again; producing just eleven runs in their last five games combined. That stands in sharp contrast to a suddenly hot Reds lineup that has scored five runs or more in all seven of their recent victories while averaging 5.2 runs per game at home in June. Live dog here!

More states expected to pass legalized sports betting laws

06.22.2018     09:13 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The floodgates have officially opened on legalized sports betting. Delaware is live. So is New Jersey. And a slew of other states are close behind.

Mississippi was aiming for a late July start though for whatever reason, a tweet announcing a target date was taken down. Still, with MGM running various casinos within the state, it's likely sportsbooks will be up and running by football season.

Kentucky wants to join the party though its taking a more cautious approach. The Bluegrass State is expected to start offering sports betting by next summer.

Rhode Island is in.

So is West Virginia, with a target date prior to football season.

NFL Handicapping: With or without Winston, Tampa Bay's early season schedule is daunting

06.22.2018     09:04 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jameis Winston's impending three-game suspension hasn't caused much of a reaction in the betting markets. A handful of sportsbooks took Tampa's season over/under win total and Week 1's game at New Orleans off the board. Others felt comfortable leaving them up with the thought that there would be little to no drop off with Ryan Fitzpatrick now slated to be under center. Regardless of who takes the snaps, the Bucs will be up against it the first third of the season. Tampa opens at New Orleans followed by back-to-back home games vs. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and then a trip to upstart Chicago. Tampa then gets a bye week but follows it up by playing in Atlanta. That’s five games in a row where Tampa projects to be an underdog.

New York's decision to pass on sports betting means big score for New Jersey

06.22.2018     08:47 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York's decision to pass (for now) on legalized sports betting is an obvious boost for New Jersey, especially Meadowlands Racetrack which is a short drive over the Hudson River from New York City. Meadowlands is expected to start taking bets in mid-July. The sportsbook will be run by giant Paddy Power Betfair.

"New York did me such a favor by not passing sports betting," Gural said. "That leaves me the entirety of New York City, Long Island, Westchester County. There are 15 million people that live within 20 miles of the Meadowlands. They gave me a tremendous gift."

Will sportsbooks adjust their betting lines for local teams?

06.21.2018     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Now that sports betting is starting to spread to states outside of Las Vegas, questions have risen about how oddsmakers will handle lopsided action? For years the betting marketplace (offshore and Las Vegas) has followed a pretty simple formula: a few lesser sportsbooks will offer lower limit openers, CRIS eventually posts its openers, and the market quickly falls in line. On a typical NFL Sunday, a bettor with multiple outs might be able to find -2.5 or +3 on the same game. But by and large, bookmakers are reluctant to offer wild "off market" numbers even when faced with "liability." The concept of "balanced action" is fine in theory but sportsbooks are routinely cheering for one side knowing that in the long term, they'll come out ahead. More than likely you'll see some of these new East Coast sportsbook "shade" their lines when local team action gets too heavy. If the Eagles are -3 offshore, it's reasonable to think a Pennsylvania sportsbook may at some point move to -3.5 even money close to kickoff knowing that it won't take long for a more serious bettor to come in and grab +3.5. We could also see adjustments with teasers, which has become a more popular trend when it comes to "protecting the house." Sportsbooks may offer -8.5 on a side but force bettors to take -9 and thus -3 with their 2-team teasers.

"Their liability [on the Eagles], given parlays, teasers, straight bets and parlay cards, could be extremely massive," Ed Salmons, oddsmaker at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, said.

CFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Saskatchewan Roughriders at Ottawa Redblacks

06.21.2018     08:58 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saskatchewan at Ottawa
Recommendation: Saskatchewan first half

The Saskatchewan Roughriders rode a strong defensive performance to a Week 1 victory as home dogs against the defending Grey Cup champions last week and will look to keep their momentum rolling into Ottawa as they take to the road for Week 2. Ottawa is the only team that didn’t play in Week 1 providing a unique handicap here with Saskatchewan having a game under their belt already while Ottawa will be opening up their regular season here. Saskatchewan QB Zach Collaros and the Riders offense is far from a finished product and they were lackluster for most of last week’s game. The team scored 27 points but one of the TD’s came on a Ricky Ray Pick Six and a couple other scoring drives were heavily aided by Toronto penalties on defense so the Saskatchewan offense is still a work in progress despite the scoring output in Week 1. The Saskatchewan defense was outstanding last week as they held the Argos to fewer than 300 total yards which is a great accomplishment for any CFL defense. Saskatchewan will play WR turned CB Duron Carter exclusively in their secondary for this game which to me enhances their defense. It does take a key weapon away from Zach Collaros and the offense as the Riders lack some depth at the WR position but Carter and Ed Gainey have the potential to form a lethal shutdown duo at defensive back for this team. Ottawa QB Trevor Harris sustained an injury in the preseason but has been cleared and is ready to start the Redblacks first game of the season here. I think it will be a tough task for him trying to navigate down the field against what could be the best Saskatchewan defense since Chris Jones took over as head coach. Ottawa’s starting offense didn't play much at all in the preseason and Harris in particular only got a couple snaps in before getting injured in the preseason so I see this as a potentially rusty offense that may not be ready to click on all cylinders especially early in this game. Ottawa is also dealing with some injuries along the offensive line with Nolan MacMillan and Jordan Lauzon-Seguin two starting OL ruled out for this game which means rookie offensive lineman Mark Korte is slated to get the start at left guard for Ottawa in this game. Having to face a very stout Saskatchewan defensive line bolstered by the offseason signing of Charleston Hughes from Calgary could be a very tall order for this shorthanded and depleted Ottawa offensive front. It’s worth noting the West Division was a perfect 3-0 SU and ATS in Week 1 against the East. I think Saskatchewan has the potential to win this game but I like them even more to get off to a better start in this game than Ottawa especially with the Redblacks starters barely seeing the field in game action at all to this point. I’ll recommend Saskatchewan in the first half.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Bibens-dirkx) at Kansas City (Junis) -115 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

On most nights, it's tough to make a case for betting the Kansas City Royals who are currently 22-51 with a MLB-worst -1.9 run differential. Over their last 20 games, the Royals have won only four times. And in terms of profits, KC is down over -22 units on the season. But while there's little to like about the team, there are things to like about tonight's starter Jake Junis. With a plus breaking pitch, Junis entered June with a 3.61 ERA and nearly a strikeout per inning rate. His numbers are now skewed some due to back-to-back poor outings but they were perhaps explainable. After posting a 7.1 IP, 3 ER, 9 K outing vs. Oakland he was forced to face the A's again five days later. They got to him for six runs, including three that left the yard. And last time out, he was tasked with facing the best offense in MLB as the Astros smoked him for six runs and, again, three dingers. Tonight is a much more favorable matchup in large part because Texas has never faced the young right-hander. Meanwhile, the Rangers just recalled Austin Bibens-Dirkx who made his MLB debut last season at the age of 32 years old. Over the last two seasons, Biben-Dirkx has been as hittable as they come: 80.1 IP, 91 hits, 15 home runs, 49 strikeouts, 5.33 FIP. Included in that was a start against the Royals a month ago in which he allowed eight hits and four earned runs over 6.1 innings. In the end, he's one of the few starting pitchers in MLB that the Royals are deserving favorites over.

College Football Handicapping: LSU Tigers draws tough conference slate

06.20.2018     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In doing some of our preseason college football schedule analysis we stumbled upon something in the SEC worth noting. Whoever made LSU's conference schedule must have it out for the Tigers. For starters, LSU draws Georgia and Florida from the East Division. Based on regular season over/under wins, those are the top two teams in the East with the Bulldogs lined at 10.5 wins and the Gators 8. Next, and most important, is how many SEC teams play LSU off of bye week. In Week 8, LSU will be playing its fourth straight SEC game while Mississippi State enters off of a bye. In Week 11, after playing rival Alabama, the Tigers travel to Arkansas who comes in off of a bye week. Only twice does LSU play a conference foe that played a league game the week prior: Florida at Mississippi State and then vs. LSU; Georgia vs. Vanderbilt and then at LSU. Overall, there are three teams (Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi State) that face LSU rested and ready. South Carolina plays two squads (Ole Miss and Missouri) off of a bye. Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and Florida all have bye weeks that essentially cancel each other out because of traditional rivalries. LSU does get a boost by playing Georgia and Alabama in Baton Rouge but oddsmakers don't appear to have much faith in the Tigers with their current season win total sitting at 7un-125 (5Dimes). Since Nick Saban took over in 2000, LSU has never won fewer than seven regular season games.

College Football Handicapping: Big Ten Divisional Crossover Games

06.19.2018     11:41 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's take an early look at the Big Ten's scheduling partners for the upcoming season. Two years ago, the Big Ten moved to nine league games which caused a home/road imbalance. This season, the East Division benefits by having two of its three crossover games and five of its nine league games at home. Ohio State, for example, doesn't play Wisconsin or Iowa the two top teams from the West based on season over/under wins. Penn State gets both the Hawkeyes and Badgers but both games are in Happy Valley. The league office must have it out for Nebraska; the Cornhuskers drew the East's Penn State and Ohio State in 2017 and must travel to Ann Arbor and Columbus while hosting Michigan State this season. Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota meanwhile play only one game apiece vs. the East Division's "Big Four" Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State.

Handicapping the scheduling partners for the 2018-19 NFL Regular Season

06.19.2018     12:28 PM     Printer Friendly

Below is a helpful chart that breaks down the scheduling partners for each NFL team. The NFL schedule is simple: Each team plays six games within the division, eight games against a division in each conference and then two games against teams within your conference who finished in the same place as you did the year prior. For example: The Arizona Cardinals play six divisional games against Seattle, San Francisco, and the Los Angeles Rams. They'll also play eight games against division "partners" NFC North and AFC West. And finally two games vs. Washington and at Atlanta, who like the Cardinals, finished third in their respective NFC divisions.

CFL Betting Free Pick: Edmonton Eskimos at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

06.14.2018     07:35 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Edmonton -7.5 at Winnipeg O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Over

We have seen some deflation in the total here in this 2018 CFL season opener between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers taking place on Thursday night. Note this game will be airing live on ESPN2 in the United States as are all Week 1 games in the CFL. This is a rematch of the West Division Semifinal from last year’s playoffs which Edmonton won and covered on this field by a score of 39-32. Edmonton should have a terrific offense yet again this season with veteran QB Mike Reilly at the controls and coming off a very strong 2017 season. RB C.J. Gable transformed this offense after the Eskimos acquired him midway through last season in a trade with Hamilton. After Gable’s addition to the team in early October last season, Edmonton scored 28+ points in every remaining game and went 6-1 SU and ATS in the process. They became a very well balanced offense that was difficult to stop and even with Brandon Zylstra leaving for the NFL, the Eskimos still possess plenty of talented receivers for Reilly to throw the ball to with this Edmonton passing attack.

Winnipeg took steps to improve their defense for this season after they gave up a lot of yards last season but this will be a tall order for them playing one of the best offenses in the CFL in their first game. The reason this total has seen some Under $$ is largely the absence of Winnipeg’s #1 QB Matt Nichols who suffered an injury in training camp which will keep him out of action for the first 4-6 weeks of the season. The Blue Bombers will be turning to rookie QB Chris Streveler (who played in College at Minnesota and later North Dakota State in the FCS ranks) in place of Nichols for this game and even though he is very green and inexperienced in the CFL making his first ever start here, he has impressed the Winnipeg coaching staff in practices and in preseason game action and they have emphatically spoken confidently about his dual threat ability which is always a plus for success in the CFL. He may not have as many struggles as some rookie QBs do making their first start simply because the Edmonton Eskimos lost a lot of key pieces on the defensive side of the football and I'm not entirely sure they will be as strong defensively this year. The Edmonton secondary is also a bit ravaged as Aaron Grymes won't play in this game due to a suspension and Johnny Adams one of their other starting defensive backs hasn't practiced all week and is doubtful for Thursday night’s game. This total opened at 53 and has fallen three points and is now sitting at 50. I think the value has now clearly shifted after the early knee jerk “rookie CFL QB making his first start” Under money came in. I think this game will feature more points than expected and it’s worth noting the Over was 7-1 in Edmonton’s last 8 road games of the 2017 season and the Over has cashed in three straight times between the Eskimos and Blue Bombers when they have played here in Winnipeg. I’ll recommend a play on the over in this Thursday night divisional battle to kick off the CFL season.

Texas (Colon) at Los Anegels (Ferguson) -175 O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have been cashing winners betting the Dodgers Over the total in recent days, and there’s little reason to expect a dramatically different result from LA’s hot lineup against Bartolo Colon tonight.

To say that the Dodgers bats are on fire right now would not be an overstatement. LA has scored 11, 12, 10, 5, 9, 8, 7, 3 and 7 runs in their last nine ballgames, cashing eight Overs in the process. Just about every power bat that Dave Roberts has at his disposal is crushing the ball. LA has hit three home runs or more seven times in nine June games while leading the majors (by far) with 26 dingers already this month.

That’s bad news for Bartolo Colon, who needed 97 pitches to labor through five innings of work in his last outing. Colon is extremely vulnerable to the home run ball, allowing 16 bombs in just 71.1 innings of work so far this season. Current Dodgers have hit .288 against him with five home runs in a decent sample size of 104 at bats. Behind Colon, the Rangers bullpen has already taken 11 losses this season, and the Dodgers have put together more than one late inning rally during this hot streak.

But the Rangers can hit too, coming off a homestand in which they scored seven runs or more in half of their games. With four starters on the DL, the Dodgers have essentially run out of effective starting pitching options, leaving Caleb Ferguson as the spot starter following a call-up from AAA. Ferguson couldn’t make it out of the second inning at Pittsburgh in his MLB debut last week, and I’m not convinced his second try is going to be significantly better.

Behind Ferguson, the Dodgers bullpen, too, has shown real vulnerability, leaving the door open for some late inning shenanigans should we need them. On a very warm evening in LA, expect runs in bunches from both squads here! Take the Over.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds

06.08.2018     10:10 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Weaver) at Cincinnati (Harvey) +120 O/U 9.5
Reommendation: Cincinnati

The Cardinals are 7-0 against the Reds so far this season, a streak primed to end tonight with an underdog payout for Cincinnati bettors. The Cardinals continue to play mediocre baseball into June, just 7-8 in their last 15 ballgames. They’ve gone 3-6 in Luke Weaver’s last nine starts. It’s surely worth noting that Weaver has gotten into the sixth inning only twice during that entire span.

It’s also worth noting that even in those two ‘gems’ games from Weaver, the Cardinals lost both times. Plus, Weaver has a fairly sharp home/road dichotomy, with opponents hitting .276 against him on the highway compared to .213 at home, and his career numbers against this Cincinnati lineup are mediocre at best.

Weaver’s inability to eat up innings is a major factor here considering the continued struggles of the St Louis bullpen behind him. Over the last week, this bullpen has been lit up on three separate occasions with a pair of blown saves and a 6.56 ERA overall. In fact, it’s Cincinnati with the vastly superior bullpen numbers both for the full season and of late (five blown saves compared to ten for St Louis and an ERA that is a half run lower).

Cinci is coming off a momentum building extra inning win over Colorado. Their lineup is clicking, pounding out ten or more hits in each of their last four ballgames. Starter Matt Harvey has enjoyed plenty of success against this Cardinals lineup, allowing only one run in ten innings of work against them. Harvey’s only start with the Reds at the Great American Ballpark was a gem against the Pirates and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we see another strong showing from Harvey tonight. College Football Betting: Virginia Tech's offseason not going well

06.08.2018     10:01 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We have our first offseason "oh shit" situation in college football. Last week, Virginia Tech lost two potential starting cornerbacks. Now it is being reported starting quarterback Josh Jackson may be suspended for academic issues. The Hokies, who ranked 13th in 2017 in total defense, were also hit hard by the draft including two first round linebackers. To make matters worse, Tech opens the season with a conference game at Florida State. South Point opened the game a pick 'em, CRIS opened FSU -5.5. Those sportsbooks choosing not to take the game off of the board have the Seminoles -7 home chalk.

NHL Gambling: Washington Capitals win Stanley Cup, Las Vegas sportsbooks rejoice

06.08.2018     09:47 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers reportedly took steps to avoid a massive hit had the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup. In the end, they were still likely happy with the outcome.

"Remember, there have been opportunities to get off this," Avello noted. "People have bet other teams, a lot of shops have put up yes/no props [on the Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup], and through each playoff series and game to game, we've been forcing the hand to bet the other side."

"We cut our liability in half on the field bet," Murray said. "We gave a good price on the field in January because we saw how big the [futures] number was. If we did nothing, we'd have been looking at a seven-figure liability."

Delaware sportsbooks have big opening day

06.07.2018     09:51 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was reported that Delaware's sportsbooks accepted $322K worth of wagers on Tuesday. That's not bad though we'd love to see the figures on a Thursday in late July when the MLB card is littered with -250 chalk.

"For us, it's really an enhancement of our tourism industry," Carney told ESPN on Tuesday. "It will attract a lot of visitors to our state, particularly at this time of year, during the summer, coming to our beautiful beaches south of here. They come here and stop at the casinos and do slot machine and table gaming. This will be another opportunity for them."
