MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oakland A's Season Over/Under Wins

Submitted by Drew Martin blog entry.
Oakland A's Season O/U Wins 74
Recommendation: Under

General manager Billy Beane’s "Moneyball” approach continues to age and given his organization’s lack resources and the emergence of more savvy front offices, the Oakland A’s have bottomed out the last two seasons with back-to-back sub-70 win showings. They didn’t make much of any noise during the offseason and appear headed for another rebuilding type campaign.

The Athletics were one of the worst defensive teams in MLB last year and ranked in the bottom five in team ERA. The offense was also abysmal; so much so that the A’s finished 32-45 O/U at home despite posting a 4.50 team ERA. Overall, Oakland had over a -100 run differential last season; every bit as bad as their 69-93 record.

After back-to-back subpar seasons, how did they respond? By shipping their most potent hitter, Danny Valencia, to the Seattle Mariners for you guessed it, a minor league prospect. This is an important factor when handicapping MLB season wins: Is the team primed to be a “seller” or a “buyer” prior to the trade deadline? For Oakland, it’s likely the latter. Sonny Gray is an obvious trade piece even though he may start the season on the disabled list. Keeping Gray healthy by perhaps limited his innings is key in order for Oakland to get as much value as possible in return. Having Gray, the team’s only current plus starter, for 130 innings as oppose to 200+ could very well make the difference between an 80-win team or 69-win team like last year when he tossed only 117 IP.

The American League West possesses three teams with postseason aspirations in Seattle, Texas, and Houston. All three teams are lined 85.5 wins or higher. And Los Angeles is projected to be near the .500 mark based on preseason markets. That leaves the A’s in a very tough position to contend. Reports indicate that the farm system is on the upswing and help is on the way. It’s unlikely however that the impact is felt here in 2017. Play the A’s under 74 wins.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Orioles Season Over/Under Wins

03.28.2017     06:40 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Baltimore Orioles Season O/U Wins 80.5
Recommendation: Over

Despite significant upgrades made to the rosters of divisional foes Boston and New York, I still view the Baltimore Orioles as an above .500 team. The Red Sox’s loaded offense now combines with what many are calling the best best starting staff in the league after acquiring ace left hander Chris Sale. New York’s reacquiring of Aroldis Chapman gives it an elite bridge-to-closer situation to go along with a lineup that added Matt Holliday and starts this season with talented run producers Gary Sanchez and Greg Bird. But Baltimore wasn’t without some solid moves of its own that puts them in position to be just as productive as last year’s 89-win team.

The resigning of Mark Trumbo ensured the potential to match 2016’s MLB-leading 253 home runs. Landing free agent catcher Welington Castillo gives the Birds a more than adequate replacement for departed starter Matt Wieters. Castillo should provide everything Wieters did offensively and he’s already said his focus will be on defense and gaining cohesiveness with the pitching staff. Castillo’s arm should improve Baltimore’s ability to slow opponents’ running games since he has ranked inside MLB’s top 5 in caught base stealers three of the past four seasons. Free agent outfield addition Seth Smith gives the O’s a solid veteran bat versus righties (.827 career OPS) and a slight upgrade in right field. His presence allows Baltimore to make Trumbo a full-time DH. Playing in Camden Yards probably enhances Smith’s offensive numbers after playing the past five seasons in pitching havens Oakland, San Diego and Seattle.

Even with their trio of very good offseason decisions, the selling point for this handicap lies in the starting staff and specifically with 24-year-old RH Dylan Bundy and 26-year-old RH Kevin Gausman. With a terrific bullpen led by lockdown LH closer Zach Britton, it’s the starting staff which needs to step up the most if Baltimore is going to make the playoffs. Bundy has dominant stuff and looks to be on  his way to a breakout season. Gausman comes in off his best season (179.2 IP, 3.61 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 3.7 K/BB) and he’s had a solid spring so expect his ascension to continue. Chris Tillman’s current shoulder issues could keep him out until at least mid-April so Bundy and Gausman need to establish themselves immediately.

In all, the team Baltimore has assembled looks to be better than that of its other AL East counterparts Toronto (O/U win total 85.5) which lost top offensive weapon Edwin Encarnacion and Tampa Bay (O/U win total 78.5). Seeing those rosters and those season win totals leads me to believe Baltimore over 80.5 wins is a solid investment.

Owners vote in favor of Oakland to Las Vegas move

03.27.2017     12:08 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's official. The Oakland Raiders announced they will relocate the team to Las Vegas. But don't get too excited. A stadium needs to be built and the team stated that they will remain in Oakland through at least the 2018 season.

"The Raiders were born in Oakland and Oakland will always be part of our DNA. We know that some fans will be disappointed and even angry, but we hope that they do not direct that frustration to the players, coaches and staff. We plan to play at the Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, and hope to stay there as the Oakland Raiders until the new stadium opens. We would love nothing more than to bring a championship back to the Bay Area."

MLB Gambling News: Houston Astros move in centerfield fence at Minute Maid Park

03.27.2017     12:03 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Another ballpark change to be aware of. Houston's Minute Maid Park has rid itself of Tal's Hill in centerfield and moved in the fence from 436 feet to 409 feet. Minute Maid Park surrendered the third fewest home runs (171) in the American League last season behind Kauffman Stadium (155) and Oakland Coliseum (155).

MLB Handicapping: Keep an eye on pitchers who threw in WBC

03.27.2017     10:50 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Quick list of MLB pitchers who tossed more than seven innings in the recent WBC. For most, their workload wasn't too far removed from what they would have done during a spring training. But for some, there were some high leverage situations that required max effort. Most notable was Toronto's Marcus Stroman who threw 15.1 innings including six innings (73 pitches) in Team USA's title game win over Puerto Rico. New York's Seth Lugo, who faced Stroman, tossed 15 total innings for Puerto Rico. He's in the hunt for a spot on the Mets' oft-injured rotation. Others high profile arms include: Hector Santiago (8.2 IP), Carlos Martinez (8 IP), Danny Duffy (8 IP), Edinson Volquez (8 IP), and Felix Hernandez (7.2 IP). Note that Volquez started three games in the 2013 WBC and was torched for 16 runs his first three MLB starts of that season.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: North Carolina Tar Heels favored to win title

03.27.2017     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
And then there were four. This weekend's Final Four matchups are set with South Carolina taking on Gonzaga and Oregon squaring off against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are +150 to win the title followed by Gonzaga (+170), Oregon (+475) and South Carolina (+875).

The remaining three games will take place at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. It's obviously a massive structure that will be modified to accommodate the small playing field compared to football. There hasn't been a lot of high profile basketball played at the venue. The only one we came across was the 2009 NCAA Tournament Regional. Here's a bunch of photos that show the layout.

NBA Handicapping: Playoff picture fairly clear outside of eighth seeds

03.27.2017     08:52 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Not a lot to be determined the final two weeks of the NBA regular season. Seven of the eight playoffs spots in the Eastern Conference are all but locked up. Cleveland, Boston, Washington and Toronto have officially clinched. The Cavaliers and Celtics are currently tied for the no. 1 seed. According to projections, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Indiana have just under a 90% chance of making it. The eighth seed will be either Miami, Chicago or Detroit. Similar situation in the Western Conference with the top seven seeds accounted for. The eighth seed is still live with Portland and Denver currently tied at 35-38.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Los Angeles Kings

03.23.2017     10:32 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC blog entry.
Winnipeg +150 at Los Angeles O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket betting against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in their 2-0 shutout road loss to the Edmonton Oilers. I see another opportunity for another wager against the struggling Kings tonight as they return home to face the Winnipeg Jets. Los Angeles is 1-4 in its last five games games with the only victory coming against woeful Buffalo. The Kings have been an offensively challenged team all season but their struggles to score goals have reached new lows in recent games as they’ve been held to two goals or less in five straight games and just six goals total during that span. And the Kings’ strong home record has taken a hit recently with just two wins in their last five tries. After two awful showings in Alberta against Calgary and Edmonton (outscored 7-2) earlier this week, the Kings are eight points behind the final wild card spot in the West with only 10 games left to play. Winnipeg has been on a little uptick of late with three straight wins over the NY Islanders, Minnesota and Philadelphia. Winnipeg continues to play the role of spoiler despite being out of the playoff race. The Jets are 5-2 in the last seven meetings against the Kings including victories in two of their last three visits to LA. This is a live underdog well worth a look tonight.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: UCLA Bruins vs. Kentucky Wildcats

03.23.2017     08:14 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
UCLA -1 vs. Kentucky O/U 165.5
Recommendation: Under

When Kentucky and UCLA met in non-conference play back in December, the game was an instant classic; a 97-92 Bruins victory in a high octane shootout. Both teams played fast – a frenetic tempo from a pair of teams that were struggling mightily on defense at the time. And both teams shot the ball well, combining for 47% shooting from the floor, including 18 made three-pointers. No surprise, then, that the rematch is the single highest totaled game in the NCAA Tournament so far.
But there’s little reason to expect the high stakes rematch to be played in similar fashion. That was then. This is now.

John Calipari spent the back half of the season coaching up the Kentucky defense. It’s worked! The lengthy, athletic Wildcats are wreaking havoc on the defensive end of the court in recent weeks. Only one of their last nine opponents has scored more than 70 points against them, with Kentucky holding foes under 40% from the floor during that span. No surprise, then, that the Wildcats are 8-1 to the Under in those last nine ballgames, including a snail’s pace Round of 32 game against Wichita State. And this is the highest total – by far – that Kentucky has seen during this span.

UCLA’s offense is similar to that of the Golden State Warriors in one key regard – it’s speed of ball movement. When teams face UCLA for the first time, they’re often overwhelmed, like Kentucky was in the first meeting. The rematch, however, isn’t as much of a basketball culture shock, because they’ve seen it before. That’s how teams like USC and Arizona slowed UCLA down in rematch situations down the stretch of the PAC-12 campaign. And, as Kentucky already knows that getting into a track meet with the Bruins is a losing proposition. Expect a very different pace mentality from the Wildcats this time around!

Last, but not least, UCLA’s defense has improved by leaps and bounds from where they were a few months ago. This WAS a bad defensive team for the better part of the first three months of the season. But in PAC-12 play, the Bruins were actually #2 in the entire conference in two point shooting percentage allowed. The Bruins don’t force many turnovers, leading to easy fast break buckets on the other end. But they’ve been fundamentally sound for the better part of the last two months now and Kentucky is not a jack threes type of team, averaging fewer than seven makes per game. Expect this rematch to be a much lower scoring affair than the first meeting, staying under the total with room to spare.

NBA Betting Update: New Orleans shows modest profits since acquiring Cousins

03.21.2017     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
We're nearly a month into the DeMarcus Cousins-Anthony Davis experiment and the results have been better of late. After a sluggish start (0-3 SU/ATS), the New Orleans Pelicans have won and covered four of five. Since Cousins joined the Pelicans, they are 6-7 SU and 7-5-1 ATS. The Sacramento Kings haven't fared well without Cousins with just three wins in 13 games (5-7-1 ATS). And while the Kings were already headed towards the lottery win Cousins, New Orleans' playoff hopes look very bleak with ESPN's Playoff Tracker currently giving them less than a 1% chance with 11 games remaining.

NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Rhode Island Rams vs. Oregon Ducks

03.19.2017     08:34 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Rhode Island +5 vs. Oregon O/U 141
Recommendation: Rhode Island
When we talk about impact injuries on the defensive end of the court, the Ducks loss of shot blocking center Chris Boucher really stands out. Boucher was not a great offensive player, but he was a low post difference maker on defense. In their first game without him in the lineup, the Ducks struggled to get stops, allowing 83 points on 58% shooting in the PAC-12 title game against Arizona. In their second game without Boucher, they allowed 77 points on 44% shooting to Iona.
The pointspread outcome in that game came down to the final possession despite the fact that the Ducks shot 56% from the floor and won the rebounding battle by 14. That’s certainly not a good sign moving forward, and Oregon is not a ‘value laden’ team at this stage of the campaign.
Rhode Island is on the other end of the ‘value’ equation. The Rams did not play their best basketball, struggling SU and ATS early and often in November, December and into January. Key contributors like senior low post stud Hassan Martin, junior point guard Jarvis Garrett missed time, and the team didn’t immediately jell upon either guys’ return to the lineup.
That was then. This is now. Unburdened by any inflated pointspreads due to their mediocrity for months, Danny Hurley’s squad finally put it together down the stretch: 9-0 SU and 7-2 ATS in their last nine games; 13-2 SU and 11-4 ATS in their last 15. This was a fringe Top 25 squad coming into the season, playing at that level here in March! Look for the Rams to give the Ducks everything they can handle on Sunday evening.
