NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Vegas Golden Knights at Tampa Bay Lightning

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vegas +145 at Tampa Bay O/U 6
Recommendation: Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights qualify under a 20-10 67% betting angle over the last two seasons; bet on teams playing their normal scheduling routine against teams playing their first game following the league mandated five-day break which the Tampa Bay Lightning will be doing tonight. However, that is not the sole reason for backing Vegas tonight. Tampa Bay suffered a massive injury in their last game prior to the break against the Calgary Flames when their stalwart defenseman and one of the best in the NHL at his position Victor Hedman left the game with a left knee injury that has sidelined him for 4-6 weeks which opens up a huge void the Lightning are going to have to fill on their blue line. Hedman plays the most minutes of any Lightning defensemen and plays in all situations so his absence is as big as it gets and the fact, Tampa Bay crumbled mentally and physically getting routed by Calgary 5-1 and falling apart in the moments following Hedman’s departure from the game speaks volumes about the impact he makes on this hockey team and their success. Tampa Bay has had a great first half of the season but they were only an ordinary .500 hockey team just prior to their break going 4-4 in their last 8 games. Vegas is in a solid bounce back spot here in addition to being poised to take advantage of a potentially rusty Tampa Bay squad. The Golden Knights have dropped two games in a row each by a single goal coming out of their 5 day break to Edmonton and Nashville but they outshot those teams by a combined margin of 79-57. They played well enough to win both games and I expect they will turn some of those missed chances into goals tonight. Tampa Bay lost their first game after their mandatory 5 day break period last season dropping a 4-3 game in OT to Dallas and I think they are at risk of losing in this game tonight. There is enough value to step in with a recommendation on Vegas in this +145 underdog price range.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After seeing early money come in on both favorites for Sunday's NFL Conference Championship matchups, it's the underdogs that are now seeing support. New England opened -8 vs. Jacksonville and was bet up to as high as -9.5. The Patriots are now -8.5 offshore and -9 at a majority of the Las Vegas sportsbooks. Minnesota opened -3 at Philadelphia. The Vikings saw early action that drove the line up to -3.5. All of the -3.5s have currently been taken out with Minnesota now -3 both offshore and in Vegas. According to Sports Options, 63% of the "betting public" is on the Patriots with 58% have supported the Eagles.

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Lakers at Oklahoma City -10 O/U 216.5
Recommendation: Over

Of all the stats that I’ve researched in the NBA this season, perhaps the single most surprising numbers come from the LA Lakers; more specifically from Lonzo Ball. Rookie point guards aren’t noted for their defense. Rookie ‘one and done’ point guards coming out of college with a single year of playing time under a non-defensive minded head coach, in particular, are not noted for strong defense.

All of which makes the advanced metric stats stand out even more. Ball rates as the #1 defensive point guard in the NBA (of players that average at least 20 minutes per game). And those aren’t just some random, meaningless stats – the results show it very, very clearly.

Since Christmas, with Lonzo Ball on the court, the Lakers are 4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS and 4-1 to the Under. Without Ball on the court, LA is 0-7 SU, 1-6 ATS and 6-1 to the Over. That’s a meaningful dichotomy, not a random one, and Ball is listed as doubtful again this evening, not likely to suit up against Russell Westbrook and company.

The point guard battle is likely to be a problematic matchup for LA again this evening. Russell Westbrook and the Thunder have faced the Lakers once already this season, a game that Lonzo Ball didn’t play. Westbrook carved up Luke Walton’s defense, as the Thunder generated 36 assists on their whopping 56 made baskets, shooting better than 60% from the floor in a 37 point blowout.

LA just hung 114 on Memphis, yet they lost at home by margin, a 123-114 shootout that FLEW over the closing total of 203.5. OKC has cashed three consecutive Unders, helping to keep a lid on the total movement upwards tonight. Look for LA’s defensive woes to be the difference maker here, in a game primed to be a high scoring affair from start to finish.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Richmond Spiders at VCU Rams

Richmond at VCU
Recommendation: Under 70.5 first half

VCU head coach Mike Rhoades is not a happy camper. Last time out his squad allowed 106 points in regulation to an average Dayton squad.

“When you get taken out to the woodshed ... you can blame, blame, point fingers, you can make excuses,” Rhoades said. “Or you can look in the mirror and say, 'I got to do better, we got to do better, we got to do more.' ”

Tonight serves as a chance for redemption, especially considering the opponent is crosstown rival Richmond. Overall, the Rams have been pretty formulaic: beat the weak, lose when asked to step up in class. Richmond is in a rebuilding year with one of the youngest rosters in the country. The Spiders took their lumps early on but have quietly improved. Since getting blown out in back-to-back games against Wake Forest and Old Dominion, the Spiders are 3-5 SU with the five losses coming by margins of 8, 5 (OT), 4 (OT), 7, and 6.

Rhoades eventually wants VCU to get back to playing a more chaotic style similar to that of what we saw under Shaka Smart. The problem thus far is that opposing teams haven't been bothered by the defensive pressure VCU has tried to create. Based on Rhoades' quotes and the personnel advantages they'll have in this matchup, I think VCU is sitting on their best defensive performance of the season. A number of ways we can play it but for now we'll look to play the first half under the total.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey -120 at NY Islanders O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

Betting New York Islanders games over the total has proven to be a meal ticket and season long cash cow for me this season. The Isles enter tonight’s game at 30-12 O/U and none of it is by accident. New York has an offense that doesn’t need many chances or scoring opportunities to produce goals. The Islanders are averaging 3.44 goals per game this season which improves to 3.81 goals per game on home ice. New Jersey is having a brutal time of it in terms of keeping the puck out of their own net. The Devils have surrendered 3+ goals in six straight games and a total of 26 goals allowed during that span so it is not surprising to see them trending 5-1 O/U during this stretch. Cory Schneider tonight’s starting goalie for New Jersey and their #1 netminder has hit a rough patch lately allowing 4 or more goals in five consecutive starts and the Over has cashed in each of those five games. I would expect the NY Islanders to find the back of the net early and often tonight as they have in most of their games throughout the season. On the flip side, for as good as the Islanders are offensively, they are extremely fragile and weak on the defensive end of the ice. The Islanders have yielded 4+ goals in seven of their last eight games thanks to a suspect defense, a brutal 29th ranked penalty kill and very shaky goaltending on a nightly basis from the Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss combination as both goalies have a GAA above 3 which is well below average. New Jersey is an improved offensive team this season as they are averaging 3.1 goals per game and have scored 3 or more in eight of their last ten games. The Devils and Islanders played against each other one time earlier this season and the result was a 5-4 high scoring affair won by the Islanders. Expect another game featuring plenty of goals tonight sending this game over the total.

NFL Gambling News: Ending of Saints-Vikings had huge pointspread implications

01.15.2018     11:13 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas sportsbook directors react to the ending of the New Orleans-Minnesota game in which the Vikings scored a touchdown, went up 5, went bonkers, came back out, and took a knee for the extra point. Minnesota closed -5.5 and won 29-24.

“That play balanced us out,” Kornegay told USA TODAY Sports. “(That) type of last-second play has been going against us, but this time it was exactly what we needed. It was a good thing for us. It would have been better had the Vikings made the extra point.”

“We needed that extra point,” Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading at William Hill, told USA TODAY Sports. “The Vikings’ touchdown did save us when it came to those who bet the Saints on the money line.”

Northern Illinois at Buffalo -15 O/U 155
Recommendation: Under

The Buffalo Bulls are off to a 4-0 start in MAC play; all four wins by double-digits. The first of the four was a resounding 104-94 victory over Toledo. The result and pace (80 possessions) seems to have "juiced" the Bulls totals a bit. Since the win over Toledo, Buffalo has played three straight opponents very similar to Northern Illinois. Against Ball State, Akron, and Miami-Ohio, the game scores were 146, 152, and 148; all of which went under the total. More importantly, the Bulls didn't allow more than 66 points. Northern Illinois played a handful of high scoring affairs during the non-conference but we've seen the Huskies return to the "norm" since MAC play began. NIU's four league games yielded four "unders" and games scores of 136, 146, 123, and 138. Buffalo serves as a big step up in class but NIU just hasn't shown much of a willingness if any to play up-tempo during Mark Montgomery's seven-year tenure. Also note that last year's meeting closed 144.5 and Buffalo won 65-45. We won't see a low score like that tonight but plenty of wiggle room to get us under the current number of 155.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oklahoma State Cowboys at Baylor Bears

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma State at Baylor -5 O/U 145
Recommendation: Under

Took a contrarian side to victory with the Free Play last week and will do it again here in this Big XII match-up. Subtraction of last season’s Head Coach Brad Underwood has not changed the Cowboys offensive style as they still play a high tempo brand of basketball under new HC Mike Boynton. Their average adjusted tempo has increased in Big XII play from 71 possessions to 74 based on KenPom numbers which is understandable since the league is loaded with up and down style teams. To their credit, OSU has remained an efficient offensive team despite significant personnel losses from last season but the overall number includes more than a half dozen non-conference defensive cupcakes. Games frequently unfold situationally due to styles and what’s interesting here about the Cowboys is how their brand of offense was stoned Saturday by slow tempo-defense oriented Texas. Despite a very respectable 44.8 FG% against the Longhorns who only allow an average of 42%, the game was reduced to a crawl and 65-64 final score.

For the last 3-4 years, Baylor has made a niche for itself in the Big XII playing slow temp and rugged, lock down defense. They’ve developed an ability to slow the conference’s 94 foot, get out and go offenses based on their desire to control speed on each end of the floor. Scott Drew’s team is not a high pressure, pass lane jumping type but one of the get back & set up, contest every shot, clock draining variety. They currently sit 331st in the nation in offensive tempo and and 25th in defensive efficiency which forms the dominant blueprint they use to dictate pace of their games.

Last season in their pair of meetings, Oklahoma State was unable to speed Baylor up. Even with dynamic point guard Jawun Evans and long range sniper Phil Forte leading one of the most explosive offenses in the land, 118 and 141 were the final game totals. Tonight’s number has churned upward rapidly to 145 off the opener of 139 almost identical to last Tuesday’s Duquesne-VCU game used in this blog. Will approach this one the same way based upon fundamentals and recommend a play on the under.

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Golden State Warriors at Milwaukee Bucks

01.12.2018     12:29 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Golden State at Milwaukee +6.5 O/U 225
Recommendation: Milwaukee

Last year, here at the Bradley Center, the Bucks gave the Warriors everything they could handle, losing by only three points as a nine point home underdog. Two years ago, Jason Kidd’s squad pulled off the outright upset against Golden State on this floor, winning by 13 as nine point dogs. Clearly, Kidd and the Bucks get up for their only home game against the defending champs.

This year’s Milwaukee squad is better – much better – than recent editions. Giannis Antetokounmpo has morphed into a superstar. Point guard Eric Bledsoe has clearly sparked the offense. Kris Middleton is averaging more than 20 points per game. Malcolm Brogdon is continuing to develop off his ‘Rookie of the Year’ campaign in 2017.

The end result? Milwaukee’s offensive execution is as good as it’s been at any point in the Kidd era, and it’s getting better by the week. For the full season, Milwaukee ranks #7 in offensive efficiency. Since Christmas, they’re at #4 in the NBA. And that’s a problem for the disjointed Warriors as they start their toughest road trip of the season (upcoming games at Toronto, Cleveland, Chicago and Houston) tonight.

Golden State has been shuttling key players in and out of the lineup for weeks, dealing with a barrage of injuries. Klay Thompson sat on Wednesday vs. the Clippers. Steph Curry turned his ankle in practice, questionable this evening. Curry’s quote is laced with frustration: “I was just doing my normal shooting routine, and just stepped on the floor and twisted my ankle. Nothing serious, just obviously frustrating...I have to deal with the mental of having to play so well, miss 11 games, come back, get my legs underneath me, and then miss a game or whatnot. That’s more the part that’s hard to swallow right now.”

That’s not all. Andre Igoudala is banged up again, forced to leave the game with a knee injury on Wednesday. And Kevin Durant missed three games last week. Remember, after signing Kevin Durant, Golden State’s "deepest roster in the league" isn’t quite as deep these days.

All of these key injuries have led to a rather dramatic decline in the Warriors defensive execution in recent weeks. After beating the Cavs on Christmas Day, Golden State ranked #3 in the NBA allowing 102.5 points per 100 possessions. Since Christmas, the Warriors have allowed 109.9 points per 100 possessions, only #20 in the NBA. That significant decline hasn’t been picked up by the betting markets just yet. Fear the Deer!

NBA Gambling News: Cleveland can't guard and thus can't cover pointspreads

01.12.2018     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like were in the midst of a mid-season Cleveland Cavaliers swoon. After ripping off an 18-1 run, the Cavs started a hellacious stretch of 10 out of 12 on the highway. They took down the Wizards on December 17 but proceeded to lose seven of their next 10 while covering only one pointspread during that span. The last two efforts have been particularly alarming. On Monday they were hammered at Minnesota, 127-99, and managed to top it with a 133-99 loss to Toronto last night. Cleveland currently sports the worst ATS record in the league at 12-28-1. Tonight's game at Indiana marks the finale of the road swing. The Cavs opened -1 and were bet up to -2.5.

"We've got to be better," Lue said after the Cavs lost for the seventh time in the past 10 games. "We know that. But until we play better defensively, I think offensively sharing the basketball, everyone on the same page -- and if guys have agendas, we've got to get rid of our agendas and play the right way."

Asked what he meant by "agendas," Lue declined to elaborate, saying he meant "just what I said."

NFL Playoff Gambling: Betting public on New England despite double-digit pointspread

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have been consistent profit producers. Including the postseason, the Patriots are 185-128-9 (59.1%) against the spread. But as the pointspread climbs, the results aren't nearly as strong. As a favorite of -7 or more, 66-61-4 (52.0%). And as double-digit favorites, like they are against the Tennessee on Saturday, 27-30-1 (47.4%). But that hasn't stopped the betting public from offering their support. According to Bookmaker.eu, 70% of bets taken have been on the Patriots.

NFL Playoff Gambling: Road teams own recent edge ATS in Divisional Round

01.10.2018     08:57 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Unlike the Wild Card round, the Divisional Round doesn’t show much in the way of a recent betting trend. Over the last seven years, home teams obviously have a straight up winning record (21-7). But road teams have the edge against the spread at 16-12. Interestingly, the four home teams combined have failed to produce a winning record (3-1 or 4-0) during that span. Totals have trended over (18-10 O/U) but 2-2 O/U each of the last three seasons.

2017

College Basketball Betting Free Play: LSU Tigers at Arkansas Razorbacks

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LSU at Arkansas -9 O/U 163
Recommendation: Under

LSU is a far different team under first-year head coach Will Wade. The most notable change is more effort on the defensive end of the floor. It's a work in progress but since losing at home to Stephen F. Austin 83-82, the Tigers have allowed 58, 52, 61, 75, and 68 including league tilts vs. Kentucky and at Texas A&M. It's still a team that will get out in transition and break down in the half court defensively, but Wade has them playing far more traditional basketball compared to the up-and-down, no defense style under former head coach Johnny Jones. Arkansas is playing up-tempo per usual but due to a number of high scoring non-conference affairs, their totals are currently a bit "juiced." All three of the Razorbacks' SEC games thus far went under the total in regulation; the Tennessee game went to overtime. Last year's two meetings closed 164.5 and 162.5 and here we see a similar number despite LSU being slower paced and better defensively. Numbers play here as the under worth a bet.

College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Duquesne Dukes at VCU Rams

01.09.2018     11:15 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Duquesne at VCU -8.5 O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Under

Going to take the contrarian side here in this contest based on the style change at Duquesne under first year HC Keith Dambrot. The former Akron head coach has brought tortoise type pace and stingy defense to Pittsburgh which has not been the norm in recent years. KenPom adjusted tempo numbers show the Dukes 315th in the nation averaging just 66 possessions in their games. The shot clock is being tested on both ends with Duquesne holding the ball for 18.8 seconds per possession (322nd) and opponents using an average of 17.8 seconds (297th) on offense. This tempo control system has led the Dukes to records of 12-4 straight up, 5-3 against the spread and 1-7 O/U the total. Tonight’s chore is to keep high energy VCU from speeding up the game and lighting up the scoreboard which isn’t easy considering the Rams are posting 79.5 points per outing.

Virginia Commonwealth has played four teams this season that fall into the ultra-methodical and defensive oriented categories with mixed results. At home versus Virginia they lost 76-67 going over the total, against Michigan in Hawaii they lost 68-60 staying under, they beat Old Dominion 82-75 going well over and then lost a home game to Texas 71-67 producing an under. Those four games saw possession totals 63, 64, 73 and 65 respectively. In the pair of overs, VCU allowed Virginia to shoot 50.8% from the field and ODU 50%. Despite only reaching 138 points and staying under, the Rams gave up 51% to Texas. All three of those teams shot better than 40% from three-point range. Michigan had 47.2 FG% but only 25% from three in their low scoring win.

The statistical numbers through almost half of the season show Duquesne to be a poor shooting team thus far at 42.1% overall with a clamp down defense. However, they’ll be playing the fastest tempo and highest offensive efficiency opponent they’ve faced all season. Even with that, have to believe that either that strong defense or lousy offense will present itself tonight which is enough to keep this game under the ever climbing total now sitting at 145.5.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Calgary at Minnesota -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Calgary Flames have been mired with consistency problems all season and I expect those to continue tonight as they head to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Wild. Calgary is coming off a nice 3-2 home win against the Anaheim Ducks; their third straight win overall, all of which coming at home. But now they head on the road where they have dropped two straight to San Jose and Anaheim. This should be a strong step up effort spot for Minnesota after they were hammered in a 7-2 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Wild emphasized playing better defensively and their overall game without the puck in practice heading into this game so I’d expect them to put forth a much improved defensive effort tonight on home ice where the Wild have won four straight games including a pair of wins against really good Western Conference teams like Dallas and Nashville. Minnesota recently got Nino Neiderreiter back from injury and he’s already made a big impact for the Wild scoring three goals in two games since his return. Calgary goaltender Mike Smith is expected to get the starting assignment tonight for the Flames but he is just 4-13 in his career against Minnesota while Alex Stalock who will be in net for the Wild has a pair of wins this season against the Flames including one of them coming in relief of Devan Dubnyk who was injured in that game. This is a reasonable home chalk price to lay with the Minnesota Wild tonight.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Georgetown at St. John's -6.5 O/U 148.5
Recommendation: St. John's

Georgetown and St. John’s are a combined 1-7 SU in Big East conference play. I think the spot, the price, and matchup works in favor of the Red Storm. St. John’s has struggled to adapt to life without Marcus LoVett who has missed several games due to a knee injury. LoVett is one of the team's better perimeter defenders and it's shown up in the stats as Big East teams are shooting 48% from three against the Red Storm. Georgetown, who beat up on an extremely soft non-conference slate, are one of the few Big East teams that are offensively challenge. Through four games, the Hoyas rank near the bottom in nearly every offensive category despite playing the likes of DePaul, Marquette and Butler who grade out as below average on the defensive end. Georgetown senior point guard Jonathan Mulmore is having a very rough go of it with just 13 points in four Big East games and a negative 12 assists to 13 turnovers ratio. That is the key aspect of this game for St. John’s. The Red Storm are 6th in the country in turnovers forced per game while the Hoyas have been horrific at taking care of the basketball as they sit 318th in the nation in turnovers committed per game with 15.7 per game. If St. John’s can force turnovers and convert those into easy baskets in transition which is what I’m expecting, it should greatly help their cause tonight considering their struggles in the halfcourt. St. John’s was laying -6.5 at home against Providence two weeks ago and yet are laying that same price here against a far weaker Georgetown outfit. St. John's first league win comes tonight and by margin.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Duquesne Dukes at VCU Rams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Duquesne at VCU -8.5 O/U 145.5
Recommendation: VCU

Duquesne first-year head coach Keith Dambrot has done a marvelous job as the Dukes enter tonight's game at VCU with a 12-4 record including a 3-0 mark in A-10 play. To compare, a season ago, Duquesne won just 10 games and three games in league play. One thing the Dukes have been able to do is defend. Their first three A-10 opponents averaged only 51.6 ppg. But the team's strength of schedule needs to be called into question. There are 351 college basketball teams and Duquesne's SOS is currently 349th according to Sagarin. And despite being 12-4 and playing an ultra-soft slate, the Dukes are only +0.8 in efficiency. Without question, tonight serves as their toughest game to date. VCU has had its struggles as they adjust to life under first-year head coach Mike Rhoades. But after a tough non-conference slate and 5-5 start, the Rams have won five of six with the lone loss coming in overtime on the road against St. Joe's. Duquesne has been able to thrive thus far on gritty play, an underdog mentality, and as mentioned, a favorable schedule. The reality is this squad doesn't have much and will undoubtedly suffer a few blowout defeats in A-10 play moving forward. Lay the points with the home side.
