MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Pittsburgh Pirates

04.21.2017     12:22 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Sabathia) -110 at Pittsburgh (Glasnow) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

The Pirates couldn’t hit a lick with Sterling Marte in the lineup. Now that he’s been suspended for 80 games, a bad lineup just got worse. Remember, Marte was one of only two outfielders with a +4.5 or higher WAR in each of the last four seasons. Mike Trout is the other. The Pirates have scored two runs in the two games since the suspension was announced.

It's certainly not like this was a particularly potent lineup when Marte was on the field. Pittsburgh has produced two runs or less in half of their last fourteen contests. They’ve yet to have a true offensive explosion, producing more than six runs only once all season.

Pittsburgh has been at their absolute worst offensively against opposing lefties, ranked #28 in MLB in batting average against southpaws (.171) and #29 in OPS (.521). That’s not a tiny sample size either, with a middle-of-the-pack 140 at-bats against lefties thusfar.

CC Sabathia is not a guy I’ll be excited about playing Under the total when it comes to those hot, humid mid-summer nights. But here in April, with gametime temperatures in the 60’s, Sabathia is still fresh. Make no mistake about it – CC has been nothing short of outstanding in his first three starts, allowing only three earned runs. He’s coming off a dominant gem against St. Louis, holding the Cardinals to three hits in 7.1 innings. And the Yankees bullpen behind him has been the best pen in baseball, allowing only six runs in 42.2 innings while notching five saves and two wins.

Tyler Glasnow went into spring training as one of the highest regarded pitching prospects in all of baseball, and he earned a place in the Pirates starting rotation after showing great promise with his September call-up last year. But Glasnow has struggled mightily in his first two starts this year. This is his shot to get it right, something he’s more than capable of doing against a Yankees lineup that isn’t built for slugfests. Expect a relatively low scoring affair here, staying under the total.

NBA Betting Alert: Rondo out, Celtics now road chalk

Chicago's Rajon Rondo is out indefinitely with a broken thumb which leaves the Bulls in a precarious position of not having a viable point guard. Rondo was a key part of the Bulls' two road victories including a near triple-double in Game 2. The betting markets reacted to the announcement by betting Boston up from +1 to -1.5.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Jose Sharks at Edmonton Oilers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Jose at Edmonton -130 O/U 5
Recommendation: Edmonton

I picked the Edmonton Oilers to win this series and even after the team suffered through an embarrassing 7-0 Game 4 road loss, my opinion remains. The series is tied 2-2 and the Oilers will enjoy home ice advantage with the series now down to a best-of-three. Edmonton is 10-1 in its last 11 home games which is a track record that shouldn’t be discounted. And they will almost assuredly come out of the gate with energy following that horrendous Game 4 loss. San Jose’s durability and its energy level may be challenged the remainder of the series. The Sharks, who went went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, are an aging team. I think the longer this series goes, the edge swings toward Edmonton's youth which has been able to make San Jose look a step slow for portions of this series. It’s worth noting San Jose has a porous 2-7 road record in its last nine road games and I think they are running into a buzzsaw tonight with the Oilers looking to bounce back on home ice. I expect Edmonton to do just that and will lay the moderate price with the home chalk.

Of the 687 respondents asked, 46 percent of them said it would be more likely for players, referees and officials to wager on contests, while 42 percent said it would not. The poll did not address other forms of gambling, such as poker or table games.

They were also queried about whether moving to Las Vegas would taint the league’s reputation and 21 percent said it would harm the NFL and 19 percent said it would harm the NHL.

MLB Handicapping: Texas Rangers look to right ship after disastrous road trip

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Losers of five of six, the Texas Rangers (5-10, -5.4 units) open a 10-game homestand tonight against the Kansas City Royals.

"It starts with playing better baseball, period," said Rangers manager Jeff Banister, who spared himself the uglier moments of the day by earning an ejection in the third inning for arguing a fair/foul call on an Oakland grounder. "It starts off the mound and with quality at-bats. We've been challenged in all facets."

"I do feel confident that our guys are going to get going and that we will be able to have a sustained attack," Banister said. "A good offense is one that string innings together. It's the one that is hit-and-miss that is challenging. We haven't been able to sustain much yet. We are going to get this going in the right direction."

Baltimore (Jimenez) at Cincinnati (Garrett) -105 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Baltimore's Ubaldo Jimenez in theory gets a reprieve tonight by facing a National League team on the road. Unfortunately, that team, the Cincinnati Reds, having one of the hottest offenses in MLB. The Reds have pounded out six runs or more in half of their games including nine in last night's series opening win. The home run has played a big part with at least one in all but two contests. Jimenez continues to trend in the wrong direction with 10 earned runs allowed in two starts. He also flashes an alarming 23-11 GB-to-FB ratio. Not a good sign pitching in Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati counters with rookie Amir Garrett who has looked unhittable thus far with two earned runs allowed in two starts. Garrett's two opponents were favorable as Pittsburgh and St. Louis rank near the bottom of the NL in nearly every offensive category. His stuff is solid but not overpowering and he's also been fortunate with a .182 BABIP and 93% LOB rate. Tonight likely serves as a step up in class at Baltimore's lineup features a handful of capable right-handed bats. Don't forget that Baltimore's ace reliever Zach Britton in currently on the DL. Temps expected to be very mild tonight with two squads that have hit a combined 38 home runs in 16 games.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Marlins at Seattle Mariners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Chen) at Seattle (Gallardo) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Two starts into the season and there isn't much to suggest Seattle Yovani Gallardo can return to being an above average MLB starter. Gallardo had some of the worst stats in the league last season (5.42 ERA/5.04 FIP) with the Orioles. In two outings for the Mariners, he lasted only 10 innings, allowed 15 hits, seven runs, and flashed a dismal 6/6 K-to-BB ratio. No matter what the venue or who the opponent, it's extremely difficult to trust Gallardo at this point in his career. The same could be said for Miami's Wei-Yin Chen. After a great four-year run in Baltimore (3.72 ERA), the 31-year-old appears to be on the downside of his career. Despite switching to the National League and getting to toss in a very pitcher friendly park, Chen regressed in a big way in 2016. Some of his struggles could be tied to an elbow problem that forced him to miss time. Reportedly healthy, Chen looked strong in his first start of the season (6 IP, 1 ER) against the Mets but turned right around six days later and was torched for six runs in three innings against the same lineup. Seattle hasn't exactly been crushing the baseball (.231/.308/.378/.685) and is without the services of one of its better weapons in Jean Segura (DL). That said, Chen's middling stuff offers an opportunity for a good night at the plate. With two average at best starters and a very reasonable total, we'll look to play over.

MLB Betting Update: Cincinnati's Arroyo forced to throw glorified batting practice

04.18.2017     10:17 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

We blogged yesterday about how depleted the Cincinnati Reds' starting pitching staff was. If you didn't already notice, veteran Bronson Arroyo, who last threw July 15, 2014 (!), is a part of the current rotation. Arroyo's average fastball in his first two starts was 83 and 84 mph. He went so far as to admit he no longer has the stuff to get MLB batters out. Tonight, he faces the Baltimore Orioles who are one of the league's best when it comes to hitting the ball out of the park. Even with a slight wind blowing in, it’s hard not to recommend some sort of anti-Reds bet. Perhaps a play on the Orioles OVER 5 team total.

“Bronson is 2 1/2 years removed from competing,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “He needs time to settle in. I’m sure the crispness will come in time, as will his velocity.”

“I feel like I don’t have enough to finish guys,” Arroyo said. “My (velocity) obviously isn’t as good as it used to be. Right now, I feel like they have to put the ball in play to get outs.”

MLB Betting: Cincinnati Reds could be great OVER bet this week

04.17.2017     10:20 AM     View Original Blog
Through 13 games, the Cincinnati Reds rank third in the National League with a 3.49 ERA. That number is likely to climb significantly in the weeks to come. The bullpen, which has greatly exceeded expectations (2.65 ERA) has thrown an MLB-leading 57.2 innings. As a result, the starting staff, has tossed a MLB-low 58.1 innings. And the rotation just got even thinner following the temporary loss of Brandon Finnegan (10-day DL). Heading into the season, the Reds were already without Anthony DeSclafani (60-day DL) and Homer Bailey (60-day DL). And Rookie Davis was recently placed on the DL with a bruised forearm. That leaves Scott Feldman, Bronson Arroyo, and rookie Amir Garrett to carry the load. A stiff challenge awaits with back-to-back home series against Baltimore and the Chicago Cubs. Look for the Reds to trend "over" the total moving forward.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Marlins at Seattle Mariners

Miami (Koehler) +133 at Seattle (Miranda) O/U 8
Recommendation: Miami

Long distance road trip for the Marlins starts tonight as they play the first of a six game west coast stint in Seattle. Confidence breeding three consecutive weekend wins over division rival New York figures to help Miami begin this away test. Seattle enjoyed the same weekend productivity as the came out of an early season slump to sweep the Texas Rangers and climb out of the AL West cellar. The sweep really gave a boost to their struggling offense as the posted a slash line of .305/.421/.505/.926.

Tonight’s matchup pits the Marlins explosive RH bats against Mariners 28-year-old lefty Ariel Miranda. Miranda has opened the season with a pair of nondescript outing versus the potent Houston Astros lineup producing game WHIP’s of 1.60 and 1.59 and not making through the sixth inning in either. Anticipate the same types of problems here and his 15 HRs allowed in just 68.2 career innings are cause for concern as well. His mound opponent RH Tom Koehler is off to his predictably consistent start. For the most part over 30 season starts you expect a six inning three runs allowed effort and through his pair of outings he’s totaled 11 IP and 4 ER allowed. He too has had some difficulty with the long ball yielding three HR’s thus far. Seattle has capable LH bats but up to this point their line against right handers is a paltry .232/.302/.373/.675.

Hesitant to play the Mariners right now due to the continued slow start of what is considered to be their top three hitters Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager. With SS and leadoff hitter Jean Segura still on the 10-day DL and off season acquisition Danny Valencia off to a .174/.220/.261/.481 start, the Mariners are currently relying on starting pitching and bullpen. Tonight, statistical indicators suggest that Miami is better in all categories so the underdog price of +133 looks to be worth taking.

MLB Handicapping: Arizona says it will install humidor at Chase Field

04.17.2017     08:28 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Forget everything you've learned when it comes to handicapping totals at Arizona's Chase Field. Last week the team announced that it was installing a humidor later this month which could significantly impact the amount offensive production. Through seven games, Chase Field has produced 77 runs (5-1-1 O/U).

“We, for the past five or six years, have talked about the idea,” he said. “We talked to former pitchers, whether it’s J.J. Putz or pitchers who have retired or pitchers we’ve traded, and said ‘what did you like, what didn’t you like?’ They all talk about the grip.

“The one thing you don’t really want to do is negatively impact the offense, because that’s part of the fun of Chase Field or Coors Field, but I don’t think it really did diminish the offense at Coors Field. We don’t know if it’s going to make much of a difference, but it’s probably a necessity.”

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

04.13.2017     11:26 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Andriese) at New York (Severino) -140 O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese is the weakest link in an otherwise sturdy Tampa Bay Rays starting rotation. He is the fifth starter and pitched like one in his first outing of the season against the Toronto Blue Jays. Andriese was lit up for five runs on seven hits and lasted only four innings. His hard contact percentage was an alarming 68.8% and keep in mind that was against a Blue Jays lineup that hasn’t hit at all thus far. Tonight, he’ll face a red hot Yankees lineup that has pounded out 4+ runs in five consecutive games and 32 runs during that span. Andriese has struggled with the Yankees during this career, allowing 11 runs in 13.1 innings. The Rays bullpen is also taxed after a relatively short starting stint by Blake Snell yesterday. On the flip side, Luis Severino is still trying to reclaim his 2015 form in which he posted a rock solid 2.89 ERA in 11 starts as a rookie. Last season was a disastrous one for him and his first start this season wasn’t much better as he allowed four runs on six hits and lasted just five innings vs. Baltimore. Severino was hammered by the Tampa Bay Rays in his lone start last season: seven runs on eight hits in only 3.2 innings of work. Severino also gave up a total of 21 runs over his last four starts at Yankee Stadium. Look for both lineups to take advantage of two below average hurlers sending this game up and over the total.
