CFL Betting Free Pick: Edmonton Eskimos at BC Lions

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Edmonton -3.5 at BC O/U 54
Recommendation: Over

The Edmonton Eskimos enter this Week 9 clash against the BC Lions surging after winning three straight games against Toronto, Montreal and Saskatchewan to improve to 5-2 and put themselves still within striking distance of the 1st place Calgary Stampeders in the ultra-competitive West Division. Edmonton’s lethal offense has carried the way for them this season as the Eskimos are leading the CFL in total yards and passing yards per game thanks a lethal passing attack led by veteran QB Mike Reilly and a slew of talented receivers that all possess the dangerous combo of athleticism and physicality with the likes of Duke Williams, Kenny Stafford and Derel Walker. The one flaw in Edmonton’s offense has been some red zone struggles at times but other than that, this remains one of the best offenses in the CFL. The defense has improved after a bad start to the season as the Eskimos have held five straight opponents to 23 points or less but many of those games came against struggling offenses including two games against Toronto and one against Saskatchewan two teams that have endured plenty of offensive turmoil this season. BC is still trying to find their way. The Lions are at 2-4 but have been very competitive in each of the last three games since Travis Lulay took over at the QB spot. Lulay has put up solid numbers and he should benefit from having three starts under his belt and I expect to see continued improvement from the Lions offense. I expect that improvement to show in this game against an Edmonton defense that is battling key injuries on that side of the football including starting LB Adam Konar and safety Neil King which could open the door for BC to make some things happen offensively in this game. The BC defense remains a bit of a problem too as the Lions have yielded over 400 yards per game on average this season and did so again in their loss to Calgary last week and being without their leader on defense and one of the top LB’s in the league Solomon Elimimian due to injury hurts. The Over has cashed in three straight meetings between Edmonton and BC and five straight games between the Eskimos and Lions have seen 57 or more total points scored. This is a high total to be sure but still worthy of an Over recommendation.

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Cleveland Browns at New York Giants

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland -1 at NY Giants O/U 35
Recommendation: Cleveland

One of the biggest line moves on tonight's card, Cleveland was bet from +3 to -1. If this was +2 or more, it would have made my client card, but I wound up with what I thought were a few higher percentage plays for my official releases. Nevertheless, I'll have some action on the Browns tonight. Cleveland made wholesale changes in the offseason and should be an improved club this year. New QB Tyrod Taylor will start and play a series or two with the starters tonight before giving way to top draft pick Baker Mayfield. Mayfield is expected to play a lot tonight, but 3rd stringer Drew Stanton could be the key if he gets mop up duty against the Giants' 4th string defenders.

I am also not a fan of the Giants backup quarterbacks. Davis Webb will get most of the playing time tonight, and he has very little experience, even in preseason. There are two other quarterbacks on the roster, rookie Kyle Lauletta and 30-year-old Alex Tanney, neither of which are any more than camp arms. I would not expect the Giants offense to do much at all in the 2nd half and I trucst Stanton much more than any of the other backup quarterbacks that will get the majority of playing time when this game is decided. Look for Cleveland to pick up where they left off last preseason, winning their 5th straight game that doesnt count.

CFL Betting Free Pick: Ottawa Redblacks at Toronto Argonauts

08.02.2018     10:03 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ottawa -6.5 at Toronto O/U 48.5
Recommendation: Over

Two teams heading in opposite directions will do battle here in this game to kickoff the CFL Week 8 slate as the Ottawa Redblacks who have won two straight games face the Toronto Argonauts who have dropped three in a row. Ottawa got the better of Hamilton last week 21-15 winning outright as 6 point road underdogs in an ugly, low scoring grinder in which neither offense got on track but the Redblacks managed to make just a few more plays to pull out the victory. Ottawa’s defense stole the show last week in the win forcing turnovers at key times and holding Hamilton out of the end zone until the Ticats managed a late TD in the 4th Qtr but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. Ottawa’s offense didn’t reach the end zone once yet still managed to win the game and that is something the Redblacks and QB Trevor Harris were extremely vocal about heading into this game. They are intent on trying to fix their red zone execution which was problematic last week. There are plenty of weapons for Ottawa to work with in this offense so for them to not reach the end zone a single time last week is a bit of an anomaly in my mind and one that will likely be rectified tonight. The Toronto defense is struggling and dealing with injuries and attrition at linebacker and in the secondary. It showed last week as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hung 40 points on this beleaguered and shorthanded Argos defense. On the other side of the football, Toronto’s offense surely will be looking at improving in all facets heading into this game as the Argos have been stagnant on that side of the football for weeks being held to only 69 points in their last four games combined all of them with James Franklin at QB after Ricky Ray’s season ending injury. Toronto Argos head coach Marc Trestman has decided to make a QB change for this game to try and spark the team’s struggling offense. Former NFL journeyman and now new Toronto starting QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson has been named the starter for this game. He played well in his lone preseason appearance with the Argos. While it’s true that playing a regular season game is much different than preseason, the Toronto offense can only improve at this point from the struggles they have repeatedly endured during the last few weeks with Franklin under center. We have two teams very much focusing in on improving their offense heading into this game which leads me to think we’ll see some better execution on that side of the ball and also a few more points in this game than this low total of 48.5 suggests. I’ll play this game up and Over the total.

DraftKings sportsbook doesn't appear ready to handle Gambling Twitter

08.02.2018     09:59 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

With sports betting legal in a number of states and everyone rushing to create a sportsbook, it's reasonable to think there are going to be some issues. FanDuel took flack for not being able to pay out bettors due to an extra inning MLB game. And yesterday, the CEO of DraftKings got called out on Twitter (he deleted the original thread) for not knowing what a 65 cent (LOL!) MLB moneyline was. DraftKings has already announced that it will offer mobile betting; we would expect others to do the same. But while we're all excited for legalized sports betting, be prepared -- very prepared -- for poor customer service, bullshit lines and limits, and a host of other problems.

"I think the opportunity for innovation is just massive (with mobile)," Jason Robins, CEO of DraftKings, told ESPN. "Not to say that you can't innovate on the retail side, but it's quite literally a limited space. Mobile, you can do anything with. There is no limit to where I think this is going to go, with integrations of streaming ... I think eventually it integrates with voice assistance in the home, smart TVs. The opportunities really are endless as technology advances."

Bettors unable to cash late night betting slips at new FanDuel Sportsbook

07.30.2018     07:32 AM     View Original Blog
Last week the new FanDuel Sportsbook at Meadowlands Racetrack caught flack for not having the funds to pay out its customers. Gambling Twitter made it sound like FanDuel literally didn't have the cash but it was later clarified that said cash was simply inaccessible at the time. The Phillies-Dodgers game went to extra innings on the West Coast and FanDuel closed its vault prior to the end of the game which left a few bettors miffed that they couldn't cash their winning tickets. The situation was unfortunate but also a reminder that there will likely be more hiccups in the future, especially with sports betting being under a microscope.

Gambling News: NHL commish Gary Bettman seems to think there's money to be made off of sports betting

08.02.2018     09:42 AM     Printer Friendly

Someone needs to sit NHL commissioner Gary Bettman down and explain that he shouldn’t get excited about his desired cut from sports betting. The NHL betting markets are comprised of like eight dudes and a bunch of local Las Vegas Golden Knights fans.

"We've historically been opposed to extending sports betting on our game, and, emotionally, I don't think that's changed," Bettman said. "However, it is a fact of life in light of the Supreme Court's ruling, and it'll be up to states to decide whether or not they're going to enact sports betting.

"From our standpoint, we believe that that whether it's our intellectual property or data, whether it's video of our game, we have important assets. And if somebody is going to avail themselves or want to avail themselves of those assets in order to conduct their business, then we're going to need to have a negotiation."

Sports Betting News: NBA partners with MGM

08.02.2018     09:27 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier this week, the NBA announced that it was partnering up with MGM.

"Those operators who create the best experience for consumers that have official data, that have the official imprimatur of our league and other leagues as well, are going to be those that win in the hearts and minds of consumers," Silver said during an afternoon news conference in New York City to announce the partnership.

"I think we're still having our discussions with our states about so-called integrity fees based on (betting) handles," Silver said. "[T]o me, there's many different ways to skin the cat, so to speak; and we decided here, rather than sort of re-litigating the integrity fee, which is still being hotly discussed state by state, let's find an approach which is unique to us and where we both feel that we're being fairly treated."

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Bieber) -120 at Minnesota (Santana) O/U 10
Recommendation: Cleveland

Minnesota's Ervin Santana looked very shaky in his seasonal debut last week. The veteran righty nabbed the win but posted an unimpressive stat line of 5 innings, 7 hits, and 3 earned runs against the Toronto Blue Jays. Santana did manage five strikeouts but only six swinging strikes and surrendered eight line drives and 13 fly balls. In the end, he was very fortunate that no balls left the yard. Also alarming was his velocity which was 2-3 MPH slower than previous seasons. He'll attempt to navigate one of the better lineups in MLB tonight as the Indians trail only the Yankees, Red Sox and Astros in wRC+. Opposing Santana will be Cleveland's Shane Bieber who after allowing only six earned runs his first four starts has come crashing down to earth with 18 earned runs allowed over his last 20.2 innings. Bieber's been a tad on the unlucky side with 57 hits allowed over 45 innings (.378 BABIP). Overall he's shown the ability to miss bats (44 Ks) and navigate a middling Twins' lineup (11.1 IP, 5 ER, 13 Ks). Despite his questionable current form, my focus remains on Santana clearly not being at full strength. Indians worth a play at the current price of -120.

Derek Jeter is the worst type of sports bettor

07.30.2018     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly

This is a peak That Sounds About Right gambling story if there ever was one. Derek Jeter reportedly felt it cool to pay off a sports betting debt using pennies. We're guessing, but this seems to be the type of game Jeets would have gotten pissy about losing. What a goon.

"He had this thing. He liked to do small little wagers every now and then. But he was such a competitor that if he lost, he would pay you pennies. So it would be like a hundred bucks on something stupid like a college football game that’s going on or something and if he lost, he would literally have a bag of pennines the next day. But it wasn’t a dollar. It was a hundred bucks. It’s a lot of pennies. He probably had to send someone to a bank and do a special request to pay you in pennies."

CFL Handicapping: Desperate for offense, Montreal trades for Johnny Manziel

07.23.2018     08:59 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday, CFL quarterback Johnny Manziel was traded to the Montreal Alouettes. Manziel didn't take a regular season snap during his brief tenure with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats though is likely to see playing time at some point for a woeful 1-4 Alouettes squad. Through five games, Montreal is averaging a league-low 13.8 ppg to go with a 1-4 O/U mark. The Alouettes haven't had a season in which it trended "over" the total since 2012. Given Manziel's ability to make plays (and mistakes) his insertion into the lineup could result in more Montreal games going over the total.

"This is a move both Kavis Reed and I felt we needed to make at this time," Sherman, the former Green Bay Packers coach, told the Montreal Gazette. "Neither one of us believes in the status quo and felt we needed to shake things up. Johnny is someone we believe can elevate one of the most important positions on our team.

"I look forward to reuniting with Johnny again and working with him."

Gambling Update: New Jersey's Golden Nugget won't be allowed to take NBA bets

07.23.2018     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

Initially, there was talk that New Jersey's Golden Nugget wouldn't be able to offer any sports betting due to owner Tilman Fertitta's connection to the NBA (he owns the Houston Rockets). It appears that stance has softened though the ban on wagering on NBA games remains. At Fertitta's Las Vegas property, betting on the NBA is allowed with the exception of any game or futures involving the Rockets. The Golden Nugget is hoping that lawmakers eventually follow that path. In order for sports betting to be viable for casinos and sportsbooks, offering a full menu is a must, especially when dealing with a "major sport."

“We are grateful to the legislature for listening to our concerns and including the Golden Nugget in the sports betting legislation. We look forward to taking our first bets on professional and college football, baseball, college basketball, soccer, hockey, MMA, etc.

“While we recognize that today the legislation will prohibit us from accepting wagers solely on the NBA, we hope to persuade the lawmakers over time that the total NBA ban is unnecessary and should be limited simply to the Houston Rockets team owned by Mr. Fertitta.”

New Jersey's Golden Nugget may be left out of sports betting barrage

06.07.2018     09:20 AM     View Original Blog
New Jersey's Golden Nugget Casino may not be able to offer sports betting due its owner’s connection with the NBA. Billionaire Tilman Fertitta also owns the Houston Rockets which on the surface is an obvious conflict of interest. Las Vegas' Golden Nugget didn't accept any wagers on Rockets-Warriors series.

"When you own teams when wagering is taking place, other games could have an impact on how your team performs," Sweeney, D-Gloucester, told NJ Advance Media. "You're not supposed to have both sides."

"My bigger concern is: You'd be able to control both sides of the equation when you're making bets," he said. "Someone said, 'Just don't let them bet on their team.' Well, guess what? The outcome of a game could make a difference on who wins the conference. There are a whole lot of other bets that take place."

"They're controlling both ends of the interest," Sweeney added. "You can divest in one or the other. You can't do both. We tried to compromise as much as we could."
