MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Garcia) at San Francisco (Cain) -115 O/U 8
Recommendation: San Francisco

To say the betting markets HATE Matt Cain is something of an understatement. How much do they dislike Cain? Well, this is only the second time he’s been favored all year (higher than -110). The first came at home against the lowly Padres with Jhoulys Chacin on the hill. And here, against a Braves team that’s five games under .500 and just lost their best hitter to the DL, Cain still is only in the -115 range, even AFTER a market move in his favor in early betting action on Friday.

In his road starts, the markets have been 100% correct in fading the aging Giants hurler – he’s thrown well only once in five tries, including a particularly ugly outing in St Louis last weekend. But pitching in his comfort zone on a typical cool May evening in San Francisco, Cain offers legitimate bet-on potential, especially in this attractive underdog price range.

The numbers don’t lie. Matt Cain has a 8.28 ERA on the highway this year, but he’s allowed only three runs in his four starts here at AT&T Park; a bet-on hurler in a ballpark where fly balls tend to die on the warning track. That home ERA includes 6.1 innings of one run ball against the potent Dodgers lineup in his last outing.

And make no mistake about it – even after a rough week in Chicago, the Giants are on a legitimate uptick right now. They had won eight of ten prior to running into the Cubs. Meanwhile, Atlanta has cooled off too since Freddy Freeman went on the DL, closing out their homestand with a pair of ugly losses to the Pirates.

Atlanta’s Jamie Garcia is a lefty, and San Francisco has struggled in the aggregate against opposing southpaws this season. But Garcia certainly isn’t mowing opposing hitters down these days. He’s notched only one win in eight previous starts, and both his FIP and his xFIP are considerably higher than his ERA. Current Giants Brandon Belt and Buster Posey both have excellent track records against Garcia; a hurler who hasn’t thrown many gems in recent seasons.

NBA Finals Handicapping: Golden State series favorite but Cleveland taking money

05.26.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Unique betting pattern thus far for the upcoming NBA Finals. For Game 1, CRIS opened Golden State as a -5 home favorite which has since been bet up to -7. For the series, Golden State opened -350 but money on Cleveland has driven the line down to -255. Last season, the Warriors closed -6 for Game 1 and around -210 for the series.

Detroit (Verlander) at Houston (Fiers) -125 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Justin Verlander flashes a decent 4.39 ERA but his walks per 9 innings are up, his strikeouts per 9 innings are down, his ground bell rate sits below 30% and his swinging strike rate is the lowest it has been since 2014. His road ERA also sits at 7.24 with 22 runs allowed in 27.1 innings to go along with 17 walks. Adding to it is the Tigers' mediocre bullpen which has a collective 5.08 ERA this season. With short stints by Detroit starters in the first two games of the series, it really puts the pressure on a declining Verlander to perform. Houston has averaged over five runs per game against righties this season and has the potential to hit that mark and some. Houston's Mike Fiers is an average at best starting pitcher who is capable of being hit very hard. He’s had a very uneven seasonwith a 5.14 ERA on the season and 17 home runs over just 42 innings. Should also note that Fiers owns a fairly strong "reverse split"; solid vs. lefties, very weak vs. righties. That's not an ideal profile vs. Detroit. In the end, I expect runs in bunches tonight in Houston. Play the over.

Up 3-1, it's a forgone conclusion that the Cleveland Cavaliers will advance to the NBA Finals. But Game 1 isn't until next Thursday and sportsbooks don't like to wait to post numbers on major events. CRIS went ahead and hung both the side and total for Game 1. Golden State opened as a -5 home favorite and was immediately bet up to -7. The total was played down from 226 to 225. The Warriors were laying -6 in last year's Game 1. That total closed 211.

Texas (Perez) at Boston (Sale) -260 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Nine of Boston's last 10 games have gone over the total including last night's 11-6 softball score. The lone exception was last week's 3-2 loss at Oakland in which Chris Sale fanned 10 over seven innings but the bullpen coughed one up in the 10th. Sale is back on the hill tonight and we'll look for another lower scoring affair. The numbers thus far are borderline ridiculous with Sale striking out over 13 batters per nine innings. As of today, he's been the most dominant starter in MLB. And he walks into another situation tonight where we can expect stellar results. The Rangers rank in the bottom third in virtually every offensive category vs. lefties including OPS (23rd, .672). And a closer look shows they've faced a fairly soft slate of southpaw starters. When asked to step up in class against Seattle's James Paxton and Kansas City's Danny Duffy, Texas failed to plate a single run over 15.1 innings. Texas counters with Martin Perez who has shown improvement across the board this season. His strikeout rate is up, home run rate down, and over his last three starts flashes a 2.79 ERA. He's not the most ideal fit for Fenway Park but cooler temps and virtually no wind give him a shot at a quality start. Tricky to get involved with Sale on the moneyline (Boston a modest +1.35 when he starts). We'll instead look towards the under 8.5.

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota Twins doing it with defense

05.24.2017     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Remember in Little League when your coach would yell, "just let him hit it" to the pitcher. That is literally what the Minnesota Twins are doing this season. And thanks to a stellar defense, especially in the outfield, the philosophy has worked as the Twins enter tonight's game at Baltimore 24-18. On the season, Minnesota's pitching staff ranks 29th in BABIP (.264), 29th in Ks per 9 (6.84), and 29th in xFIP (4.87).

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Cleveland Indians at Cincinnati Reds

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Carrasco) at Cincinnati (Garrett)
Recommendation: 1st 5 UNDER 4.5

The battle for Ohio features one of the biggest over teams in MLB with the Cincinnati Reds (26-16-2 O/U) hosting the under-prone Cleveland Indians (15-23-3 O/U). I advise leaving the bullpens out of the equation this evening and focus in on the starting pitching matchup.

Carlos Carrasco, the 30-year-old Venezuelan flame thrower, has put together an All-Star caliber year with a 2.60 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. His last outing was his worst to date as he allowed five earned runs. It was also his lowest pitch count of the season and he struck out six and gave up only two line drives and four fly balls. Facing the Reds' lineup for the first time this year, he's poised for a strong start.

Opposing Carrasco is the young lefty Amir Garrett who is also coming off a down start. The 6-5 rookie faces an Indians lineup that has really struggled against lefties this year (82 WRc). Garrett has also shown to be comfortable at home with 18 strikeouts and only six earned runs over three starts.

Temps are expected to mild with wind not a factor. Couple that with Cleveland losing a bat due to the NL venue and two starting pitchers with a favorable profile and we come up with a play on the first five innings UNDER 4.5 at a small plus price. .

NBA Playoff Betting: LeBron James poised for success following Game 3 stinker

05.23.2017     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In a rare occurrence, LeBron James "pooped the bed" in Cleveland's infamous Game 3 loss to the Boston Celtics. James finished with 11 points and six turnovers. One would expect James to fire back with a solid showing for tonight's Game 4. His current prop bet point total is 32.5. Prior to Game 3, James averaged 34.3 ppg. He also had a seven-game stretch where he netted 33 or more -- it would have been eight straight had he not been pulled in Game 2's blowout. There's the potential tonight with the Cavs currently -15 chalk but it wouldn't shock us to see James post big numbers.

MLB Handicapping: Colorado's pitching staff thriving under new regime

Good article on the early success of Colorado's young pitching staff under the watch of manager Bud Black and pitching coach Steve Foster. The Rockies rank third in ground ball rate at 50.1% and eighth in xFIP at 3.96. The one concern moving forward is how the staff is handled the back half of the season once their innings start to pile up. Antonio Senzatela and Kyle Freeland are rookies and Tyler Anderson and German Márquez are in their second season. Jon Gray, who was projected to be the ace of the staff, is slated to return from a broke foot in mid-to-late June.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Cole) -120 at Atlanta (Foltynewicz) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

It’s impossible not to like the personal results Pittsburgh's Garrett Cole has posted thus far this season, especially if you subtract his Opening Day start at Boston. He has now recorded eight consecutive quality starts which have produced these numbers: 0.96 WHIP, 2.25 ERA, 4.36:1 K:BB ratio and 15.0 pitches per inning. The latter is very impressive (5 of the 8 starts have been below 15.0) because it indicates Cole has been able to get through a majority of his innings pretty economically. Every opponent he has faced during this stretch ranks in MLB’s Top 15 in OPS (Atlanta, St. Louis Cubs twice, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Arizona & Washington), five are in the Top 10 and only once has he allowed more than two earned runs. That start was against the Braves back on April 9th in his second start of the season when he went six innings, allowed eight hits (2 HR) three earned runs. It should be noted that three of the eight hits he allowed (1B/2B/HR) were to Atlanta's Freddie Freeman who is now on the DL.

While it’s easy to take on glance and immediately praise Cole’s statistics, you have to dig just slightly to come up with similar praise for tonight’s Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz. His numbers overall are skewed by a pair of tough starts but his last six starts have seen five brilliant ones sandwiched around a brutal one. Minus out Foltynewicz’s four inning, seven earned run debacle on May 5th against St. Louis and you have five starts which are all quality and show a 1.00 WHIP, 2.25 ERA, 3.2:1 K:BB ratio and 15.2 PPI. The results are almost mirror images of Cole’s with the exception of the K:BB ratio. He has one start versus Pittsburgh this year where he lasted only 3.2 innings but gave up just two runs.

Offensively there is a major gap between these teams and the lack of Pirates offense is what has caused Cole to be just 2-4 on the season with three no decisions. That lack offense (MLB OPS rankings of 27th Total at .672 / 29th vs RHP .665 & 29th on the road .649) figures to help Foltynewicz tonight. Cole will be glad to not see Freeman in the lineup especially since he’s held newly acquired replacement 1B Matt Adams to 2/14 .143 with five strikeouts in their matchups. Home plate umpire is unknown at this time but factors here suggest a play on the under 8.5.

MLB Handicapping: Bettors pound OVER for tonight's Giants-Cubs game at Wrigley

05.22.2017     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When it comes to posting totals in Wrigley Field, weather -- particularly the wind -- is obviously the biggest factor. So it's perhaps a bit of surprise to see CRIS hang 8.5 on tonight's game vs. San Francisco. The wind is coming from the SW which is out to left-center/center field at 12-16 mph. And it's not like there are two premium starters on the hill with Ty Blach taking on John Lackey. The aforementioned 8.5 lasted less than two minutes as bettors pounded the over for the better part of an hour. The market has since settled in at 10ov/10.5. There were five homes runs hit in yesterday's 13-6 Cubs' victory.

MLB Gambling Update: Baltimore Orioles enjoy a big heaping plate of regression

05.22.2017     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly

UPDATE

Regression, karma, laws of averages...whatever you want to call it, the Baltimore Orioles have returned to the Earth's atmosphere following their fraudulent 22-10 start. On May 10, we posted some of Baltimore's numbers including their 8-1 record in 1-run games. Since then, they've lost seven of 10 and six of those losses came by, you guessed it, one run.

MLB Handicapping: Stats show the Baltimore Orioles to be really freaking lucky

05.10.2017     08:36 AM     View Original Blog
The Baltimore Orioles (+12.4 units) are back to defying all sorts of logic with an MLB-best 22-10 record (including six straight wins) despite a very mediocre statistical profile. The Orioles' Pythagorean W-L record is 18-14 and they are 5-1 in extra inning games and 8-1 in 1-run games. The "close game" record is even more fortunate considering Zach Britton, one of the best closers in the league, has only made two appearances since April 14 due to injury. Regression is on its way but don't expect to be catching a bunch of big underdog prices when it does. Despite the stellar record, Baltimore's average moneyline price is around -102 thanks to a bunch of average-to-good starters. The Orioles have been favored by -140 or more only five times. To compare, the Cleveland Indians, who boast a far more respected rotation, have been -140 or more 19 times.

Baltimore Stats (MLB rank)
Batting Avg. .252 (14th)
On-Base Pct. .311 (22nd)
Slugging Pct. .409 (16th)
wRC+ 96 (16th)
ERA 3.85 (10th)
FIP 4.33 (22nd)
xFIP 4.61 (25th)

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates

05.19.2017     12:06 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly

Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Hellickson) at Pittsburgh (Williams)
Recommendation: Over

The days of Jeremy Hellickson’s strong start to the season for the Philadelphia Phillies are numbered. Hellickson sports a decent 3.71 ERA but it doesn’t correlate to his xFIP which is nearly two full runs higher at 5.56. His strikeouts per 9 innings has declined sharply from last season going from 7.3 to 3.7 and his swinging strike rate has followed a similar pattern going down from 10.8% last season to 7.4%. He’s also seen an uptick in his hard hit ball pct. which indicates opposing hitters are squaring up his pitches more successfully than a year ago. Hellickson has surrendered 12 runs in his last 13.1 innings of work and has failed to pitch more than 6 innings in four straight starts which is bad news for a Phillies bullpen that is not only bad with a 5.04 collective bullpen ERA but has been taxed with Phillies starting pitchers on a 7-game streak of not getting past six innings in any start. Pittsburgh’s lineup has climbed their way out of a recent funk by scoring 30 runs in their last five games combined and I expect them to do damage tonight. On the flip side, Trevor Williams takes the mound for the Pirates and he doesn’t offer a whole lot of long-term upside. He has allowed 17 runs on 23 hits in 19.2 innings of combined starting and relief work for the Pirates this season and the long ball has burned him issuing 5 home runs during that span. Williams has had trouble finding the strike zone at times as well with nine walks allowed in 19.2 innings. Philadelphia has scored at least four runs in seven of their last nine games and should be able to plate some runs tonight against Williams and the Pirates tonight. The over is 7-2 in Philadelphia’s last nine games and 4-2 in Pittsburgh’s last six games. I expect a high scoring affair in this inner state battle tonight.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays

05.19.2017     12:01 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Severino) -127 at Tampa Bay (Ramirez) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

The Yankees red hot lineup got cooled off by Danny Duffy last night, but I’m not expecting any sort of longer term decline. A squad that leads the majors with 17 games this season in which they’ve produced seven runs or more is live to do it again tonight in Tampa against Rays spot starter Erasmo Ramirez. This is a lineup worthy of support following a loss in which they got shut down completely; 8-2 in their last ten games on the highway.

And the Yanks are catching Tampa in a ‘fat and happy’ spot, returning home off their first winning road trip in nearly a year. The Rays just hit ten home runs in Cleveland in their three game series, now returning home to the Trop where the ball just doesn’t carry as well as it does in most other ballparks. This Rays lineup is not primed to batter Luis Severino and the elite Yankees bullpen behind him.

Severino’s advanced metric stats are truly stellar. His xFIP is sitting at 2.87, nearly a full run lower than his ERA. Severino has an excellent 50% ground ball rate and he’s striking out more than ten batters per nine innings while walking only two. Severino held the Rays to two runs on five hits while striking out 11 batters in a dominant seven inning performance in his lone start against Tampa this year. His numbers this season and for his career clearly show that the best place to back Severino is on the highway, because he just doesn’t allow many home runs in pitcher friendly venues like this one.

Behind Severino, the Yanks rank #2 in MLB in bullpen ERA, suffering only three bullpen losses all year. The Rays bullpen has suffered ten losses already and they rank outside the top half of MLB in bullpen ERA. That’s bad news with Ramirez on the hill, because he’s not going to eat up many innings, lasting only five in his lone previous start this season and coming off a 28 pitch effort out of the bullpen on Sunday. Short road chalk worth laying!
