Detroit +140 at Washington O/U 5
Two of the Eastern Conference's best clubs will do battle in our nation’s capital tonight when the Washington Capitals host the Detroit Red Wings. Both squads are currently in second place in their respective standings, with the Caps at 38 points in the Metropolitan Division and the Wings with 34 in the Atlantic. Washington had it's six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 overtime loss to Winnipeg. Head coach Barry Trotz lost a challenge in the extra session that should have negated the winning goal as the Jets were offsides upon crossing the blue line to start the play. The call stood and the Caps now return home to take on a Detroit club that has won four of its last games including 15 goals in in its last three. The Wings played the Caps tough in their two previous meetings with Detroit winning the first meeting 1-0 thanks in part to a stellar 38-save shutout performance by goaltender Petr Mrazek. Washington took the second meeting by a score of 2-1. Both clubs have tremendous goaltending, with the aforementioned Mrazek for Detroit and Braden Holtby for Washington. However, the defense corps for the Caps will be a bit thin as both Brooks Orpik and Karl Alzner have been dealing with injuries. With the high price here, I'm willing to back the value-laden road underdog.
