National League contenders continue to struggle

It's been remarkable watching so many National League contenders struggle the past few weeks. Philadelphia was a huge favorite in all four games at home against Houston and were swept. The Phillies then went to NL-best San Diego and swept the Padres only to lose last night at LA 3-0 while generating just one hit against the Dodgers. San Diego had won eight of nine before its five-game losing streak. The Padres still lead the majors in profits produced, but lost as a betting favorite in four of their last five games. The Braves were swept at Colorado and returned home to lose the first game of their series with the Marlins. Atlanta was favored in three of those four losses but bounced back with three more wins.

San Francisco is now five games behind San Diego after blowing a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning at home last night vs. the surging Colorado Rockies, who have won six of seven to get within five games of the Phillies in the wild card chase. The Giants won Sunday as a big betting favorite but have lost four of their last five as betting favorite and six of their last nine games overall.  San Francisco remains 1.5 games behind Philadelphia in the wild card race, and those two teams are tied for the best record in the National League since July 5th (31-20) despite some recent struggles. With these top teams struggling as betting favorites, underdog bettors have really profited. We’ve also benefited with many of these ‘Dogs and that has been a big part of our profit-producing run and success despite a few ‘strikeouts’ to close the month; our third straight winning and profitable month betting baseball.

St. Louis continues to bury their betting backers. Since Aug. 14, the Cardinals have been the betting favorite in each contest and gone 4-11. The Cardinals just lost three of four games at Washington, twice as a -170 favorite. They were shut out at Houston Monday and have now lost six of seven games against three of the bottom teams in the NL. During the last 15-game stretch, St. Louis has lost nearly +15 units. The Cardinals have lost more money this season than any other MLB team with a winning record; by better than 2-1 margin in money lost. No surprise that St. Louis’ recent struggles have pushed them six games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central. The Reds are just 5-4 their last nine games after last nights win and also failing to produce profits. However, the Reds were able to extend their lead in the NL Central while also winning seven-straight games in mid-August.

Understanding the ebb and flow of MLB betting and identifying overvalued teams (Cardinals) and undervalued teams like the Orioles and Astros most recently can go a long way in building your bankroll. Totals bettors can profit by identifying favorable match-ups, personnel changes, starting pitching and available relievers, pitchers or hitters parks and umpires tendencies.  As teams push for the pennant (and press a bit), you need to be more careful and not get caught supporting too many inflated betting favorites. Be proactive and test yourself by identifying more live underdogs and perhaps lighten or split your bets with some 5-inning plays and full game selections. As you become more comfortable betting on ‘bad’ teams like the Orioles and Astros, you’ll start to understand ‘value’ in the right situations and see how cashing more underdog tickets can really boost your bankroll.

If you're interested in making money in MLB with plenty of 'Dogs offering a chance to bite, then join Fairway's football forecast and selection service and we'll chip-in a solid offer for our profit-producing baseball right through the World Series. We’re up over +18 units of profit in all sports the month of August and you can join the fun as we continue the run into football season by calling the Sportsmemo office at 1-800-575-3069. Best wishes this football season and the remainder of baseball, and I look forward to winning together.
