? It nearly happened courtesy of the New York Racing Association. Luckily, enough people justifiably bitched and complained so the NYRA backed off of its plan.
"The fee was originally announced due to rising costs associated with maintaining live operator phone service," NYRA spokesman Dan Silver stated in an email. "However, after listening to feedback from our customers, we have decided that NYRA Rewards will not institute a $1 fee per call for live operator phone service and these calls will continue to be free of charge."
