Couldn't help but think this didn't accidentally happen. Mavs get the ball down 1 with 24 seconds left and everyone know Dirk is getting the ball. Carlisle finds a way to get the mismatch with Perkins switching on to him rather than Ibaka. Dirk drives on him, collapses the defense and draws the foul for two free throws to take the lead. Then, after Brooks timeout, everyone knows that Durant is going to get the ball on the inbounds pass with 9 seconds and take the last shot. Carlisle finds a way to get his best defender (Marion) onto Durant despite not being on him before the pass was made. He was initially guarding the guy that screened for Durant. They switched the screen. Marion cut off Durants initial move and forced him into a low percentage shot with a hand in his face. As we all know it bounced in but that whole sequence just made me think Carlisle knows what Brooks is doing. Talent just made a play.

This is a pretty sick mismatch IMO... There's no way Dallas can cover all three of Harden, Durant and Westbrook at the same time. However, so often they'd take a bad shot or don't even get the ball to the severe mismatch. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the Mavericks almost always go to the right matchup.

Couldn't have said it better COT...watched HC Carlisle leave Philly HC Collins flustered when the Sixers were going real good back in February by using Marion (that time on G Lew Williams) and an aggressive ball denial & trapping defense. Marion is such a flexible on ball defender (guard anything from 6'3" to last night 6'11") which gives Carlisle a great option but he does know how to defend the opponent's top option. Last night's game winning shot by Durrant has Marion on him and C Mahinmi outstretched running right at him which is terrific defense. On the replay you can see that the shot wasn't really even on target as it hit to the far left of the rim but bounced towad the center of the backboard and the dropped in. Like you said, just a great player making a play at crunch time. To ER's point, Westbrook had it going early and when the "Big Three" are all on the floor at once, the Mavs really don't have three man defenders to check them. They can use Marion & West but that's leaving somebody with a mismatch. Add in the fact that Ibaka is the best "4" on either side and it's tough to see how Dallas can guard everything. Zone was even chewed up at times in the 2Q. One of the differences is, PG Kidd plays above his limitations defensively using his quick hands while Westbrook at times plays more for show than substance. This is supposed to be the year OKC learns to be wise, consistent, and mature in the playoffs and they may very have all three , but last night's game proved Dallas although older and slower definitely owns those characteristics. Five games between these teams now and OKC has only shook them once.
