Just received an email from directv that The Mtn network is ceasing operations. Not that the football is going to be much of a draw any more anyhow.

Sometimes one man's loss is another man's gain...
SEATTLE, WA (January 17, 2012) – DIRECTV Sports Networks and the Big Sky Conference have entered into a five-year agreement making DIRECTV Sports Networks and its ROOT SPORTS branded regional sports networks the league’s official TV partner and the home of Big Sky football and basketball. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The concept itself wasn’t bad, as I liked having a conference-centric network as an option, but the Mountain West virtually put all of its eggs into the network, and it never picked up enough steam to get going. BYU was one of the spearheading schools for the network, only to bail, and the overall production wasn’t even close to being on par with some of the other networks out there. Some of the on-air talent was decent enough, but others weren’t very good. I remember watching a few baseball games with Todd Christensen (?!) as the lead analyst. So, yeah…..
The potential merger with C-USA was allegedly going to be driven by a national TV network deal, but that seems to be fizzling, so I don’t know where the conference goes from here for exposure, which has to hurt in terms of recruiting (think New Mexico and UNLV hoops, which are on the verge of being national-type programs). I know they have tie-ins with both CBS Sports and NBC Sports (former Versus), but is that enough. The Big Network in Bristol is still not involved, and until that happens, I don’t know where the major exposure comes from.
