I started this thread last year. Add your thoughts, insight and notes along the way.
Drew Smyly - Left-handed pitcher, Tigers. 22-yr old second round pick out of Arkansas. Earned the Tigers #5 starter spot with a solid spring (2.84 ERA, 13 IP), but was roughed up in his final tune-up last Saturday at Triple-A Toledo, allowing 3 runs, 3 hits and 2 BB in less than 2 innings.
Smyly has never pitched above Double-A and was the Tigers minor league pitcher of the year in 2011. He went 11-6 with a 2.07 ERA last year with 130 K's and 36 BB. Solid command and plenty of promise for the 6-foot 3 lefty who makes his MLB debut as betting favorite vs. Rays today.

Rookie jitters right from the get-go in the top of the first: two walks and a hit against the first three batters he faced. From there with the bases loaded and nobody out? Pop-out, strikeout, strikeout, no runs allowed. It took Smyly 28 pitches (only 13 strikes) to get through the inning, but I'd give him a positive grade for that performance, not a negative one.

Tigers left-hander Casey Crosby makes his MLB debut June 1 at Comerica Park vs. NY Yankees.
Crosby is 4-2 at Triple-A Toledo with a 4.26 ERA. In his last two starts, he has allowed five earned runs in 15 innings with one walk and 16 strikeouts.
Crosby, 23, was a fifth-round pick of the Tigers in 2007. This spring, he competed for the open rotation spot, which Drew Smyly won. Crosby takes the rotation spot of Doug Fister who went back on the 15-day DL.
From 2011...Crosby
underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007 and missed most 2008 season. Had additional elbow pain in 2010 and missed most of that season.
Repertoire:
• FB4 93-95: He's been clocked as high as 97-98 but works at 94. (55-65)
• FB2 91-93: He doesn't command the two-seamer as well as the four-seamer, but it's got plus sink. (50-65)
• SL 85-87: Can get loopy at times, but has plus rotation. (45-60)
• CH 84-85: Still developing, should be solid/average. (40-50)
Crosby works from a high 3/4 slot that allows him to use his 6'5" frame to pitch downhill. When he keeps his pitches down, they really move and the plane is very deceptive for hitters. He commands his four seam fastball better than his two seamer, though both have good late life.
Crosby also features a slider that shows good tight rotation and downward break. He has a developing change-up that could be good but like all his pitches, needs reps to build the feel that a good change-up requires and the ability to command it consistently.
