Been doing some research on the NFL preseason games for this week and thought I would post a couple cool links I thought might help some folks handicap these games.

There aren't many talking head columnists that I respect and enjoy reading but Pete Schrager of FOX is one that I've always liked. He does a good job covering NFL and College Football for them. I've seen him on TV many times as well and he brings a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm when he's on the air. That article he wrote about the best backup QB's in the NFL was well done IMO.

Worth noting: good backup QB's in the preseason are MUCH more important when the coach's gameplan includes actual pass plays. With a post first quarter gameplan of run left, run right, run up the middle and punt, the best QB rotation in the world isn't going to help, whether you bet the side or the Over.....

Ryan Tannehill will be starting for the Dolphins tonight. Kid looked pretty sharp last week and will receive about 30 plays. They ran a ton of no huddle last week (61 plays of no huddle to be exact). Interested to see them tonight.

Bengals/Packers sounds to me like the battle of "who cares" tonight.

Green Bay is expected to play its starters for the first half but that is not expected to be the case with the Bengals. Lewis indicated earlier in the week that he is planning to have his first unit play the same amount of snaps that they did last week, which would be 24-26 or roughly three series.

The Bengals have some depth issues on the defensive line and at cornerback.

“We’ll play like we did last week and take care of our guys and play them the way we need to play them,” Lewis said.

Wide receiver Steve Smith’s infected foot is getting better, but the Panthers are not going to rush the 12-year veteran back into action.

Smith missed practice for a second consecutive day Thursday, although coach Ron Rivera said Smith’s foot had improved following a round of antibiotics.

Rivera said the Panthers will decide Friday whether Smith will play in Sunday’s exhibition against the New York Jets. But Rivera indicated the teams plans to be cautious.

“Putting him out there right now in this situation and circumstances would not be smart, especially if he doesn’t get any practice reps in terms of what we do,” Rivera said. “This is really a game-plan week. We’re approaching this week as if we would any regular-season game. … To put a guy out there when he hasn’t had a chance to get those reps would be careless.”
