When Penn State starts recruiting and accepting guys that don't even get an invite to WALK-ON at Akron, you know that Coach O'Brien and his staff are really hurting for bodies right now. Originally, I was thinking the Nittany Lions might offer some value in 2012, with an 'us against the world' mentality. But the more I read about the state of the football program in Happy Valley right now, the more I think this team is poised to challenge Indiana for last place in the Big 10 'Leaders' division.
Here's a cut and paste, with the full article linked below:
"With all those guys leaving, it opened up spots and gave me an opportunity," said Jared Fagnano, who lives in Williamsport, Pa. "And I've just always wanted to play football there."
Jared, a preferred walk-on, asked to be released from Akron in early August because he was not invited to preseason camp. Shortly afterward, he reached out to Penn State's coaching staff, who seemed receptive to his addition.
The 5-foot-10, 182-pound wideout....

Had my Bose noise cancellation headphones on this summer. That team lost a little depth but noone worth a fuck to a pointspread or win total. O'Brien has injected the offense with modern concepts and an actual legit coaching staff. As a bettor I like to think I can count on players to play hard all game and there is no doubt these guys do that. Too bad that kicker lost the Virginia game or they would be 4-1 SU just like their 4-1 AT$ record | collect-on-tuesday wrote on Fri, 17 August 2012 17:16 | Outside of @ Nebraska, I don't objectively see any team on that schedule that is a sure loss. IDK if the Ohio st qb has gotten better and can now throw a forward pass, I do know Urban doesn't have Dan Mullen on his staff. IDK if Wiscy has a solution at QB, I thought O' Brien was it but he still hasn't won the job, may be coach speak tho. Chryst was the real talent IMO on the Wiscy staff and he's gone. Illinois has new coaches and Iowa does too except for the HC. Through all these years that defense has been good. They don't play one team TY with a decent QB that can beat you on 3rd down with his arm. Maybe Iowa's QB. Wouldn't be shocked if they won 2 games or 9. They can't help but be better offensively. I guess at 5.5, its much easier to make a case for the Over bc that under train left a long time ago. Those guys that stuck around want to be there. Those loser fans will appreciate that and be behind them strongly. They'll play with emotion. Bye week comes in the middle before the sched gets tougher. I don't love it, but I don't mind being the only person swimming the other direction either

HC O'Brien's offensive scheme which he brought from New England and his play calling are clearly the most significant reasons why PSU is having success. Team could realistically be 4-1 right now if not for 3 blown FG's vs. Virginia. Had chances to beat Ohio U. as well so maybe you could argue 5-0. He's taken a team that lost 20 players and 9 starters and made them better than their talent & depth would suggest he could. The best part for the Nittany Lions is that if they can hang on health wise, continue to improve and get some more wins, they should be able to recruit far better rght off the bat than anyone thought they would.
