Delmon Young arrested in NY
Updated: April 27, 2012, 11:34 AM ET
NEW YORK -- Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young has been arrested on a hate crime assault charge after police say he attacked a group of men and yelled anti-Semitic epithets.
Police say Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York, not far from Times Square. A group of about four Chicago tourists staying there were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke. As the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets. Police say it's not clear who he was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with one of the Chicago group, who sustained scratches to his elbows.
The man, 32, refused medical attention, New York detective Joseph Cavitolo told the Detroit Free Press.
Police were called, and Young was arrested at 4 a.m. local time at 54th Street and 6th Avenue. He was hospitalized at first because he was believed to be intoxicated.
Young faces a misdemeanor "aggravated harassment hate crime" charge and was being processed Friday, Cavitolo said, according to the Free Press.
Cavitolo said he did not know if the victim of the assault, which was said to have happened around 2:30 a.m. ET, was Jewish.
When asked to comment on the incident by the Free Press, Tigers spokesman Rick Thompson said: "We'll get back to you."

This guy is a prototypical example of how scouting directors and crosscheckers get blinded by a guys "tools", then wind up getting burned down the road by character issues.
Young was graded out in the '03 draft as having major league hitting and power potential, to go along with his throwing arm, making his #1 pick overall in the draft seemingly justifiable initially.
I had heard some rumblings when he was in the lower minors regarding his overall comportment, which one source referred to as his "NWA bullshit". Mind you, the Rays had already been reeling with past high draft picks gone sour such as Josh Hamilton, Dewon Brazelton and the legendary Elijah Dukes, so this was really no surprise. But everything was swept under the rug after Young had a solid half season in AA in '05 (where he got 3 games for bumping an umpire), then got promoted to AAA to finish the season, and was named Minor League Player of the Year.
The following year saw the infamous bat throwing incident that Jay referenced in this post, which really ruffled some feathers within the organization and throughout baseball. Nevertheless, after issuing the obligatory apology through his agent, he got called up in late August of '06 and made his ML debut at age 21.
2007 was the first chance I had to see him play regularly. I recall him being super aggressive at the plate, often swinging at first pitches, but he could rake and had quite a hose from RF, but was also prone to common rookie mistakes. I was at a game in Tampa early in April in '07, talking to an ex-teammate of mine as we stood in the Rays dugout, prior to the start of the game. There was a small group of reporters waiting around, hoping to secure an interview with him. He comes walking back to the dugout with Elijah Dukes, when one of the reporters asked him for a few quotes and he responded with, "Get the f--k out of my face mother f---er. Right then and there I knew he was a prick.
The subsequent changes of teams to follow stands to reason, and I guarantee you he won't stay in one place too long from here on out.
