Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, who pitched eight of his 10 major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, says he used crack cocaine every day of the 1986 season while with the Red Sox, including one day in Oakland when he smoked in the clubhouse before one of his starts and had the drug tucked in his cap while on the mound.
I had shoulder surgery the same day that Boyd did in the late 80's in a hospital outside of Auburn Mass. The same surgeon did both procedures, doing mine first.
I always tell everyone the doctor thought I had a brighter future that Boyd as a pitcher that's why I went first. Turns out the surgeon wasn't that good as neither of us were any good after that.
Only thing was, I wasn't that good before the surgery, and it sounds like Boyd had "other" interests outside of baseball.
Still tell the story 25 years later to anyone who brings him or those Red Sox teams up. Doctor thought more of me than Boyd when it turns out they probably couldn't find Boyd as he was in some crack house down the street. That's the most likely reason I went first.
Filthy drug, cannot imagine dealing with the paranoia it can cause while being scrutinized by tens of thousands of fans.
Gotta go with Morel Orel, cannot see him speedballing on gameday. Though nothing would surprise me at this point.
