Duncan homered in the fourth off an ineffective Dan Haren (6-8), who after the game acknowledged his lower back has been bothering him most of the season and seems destined for the disabled list.
After getting pounding for the fifth time in as many starts, Haren finally admitted what everyone's suspected all along: that the back pain he brought with him from spring training is a lot worse than he's let on.
He will undergo a physical examination when the team gets back to Southern California on Thursday and a stint on the disabled list looms as a possibility.
"I've tried to suck it up a little bit and do my best out there, but first and foremost is the team. Am I helping the team or hurting the team going out there? So, we'll go from there."
Haren, who hasn't missed a start since college, experienced severe shooting pains in his back during a bullpen session a year ago in Kansas City. But he described the current problem as "not so much pain as stiffness" and said it's been lingering all season.
It wasn't as troublesome early in the year, with the right-hander turning in quality starts in seven of his first 11 outings. But he fell apart in the last month, with his earned-run average jumping to 4.86. In his last five starts, he has allowed 26 runs in 27 innings.
"It's not so much that it's affecting my velocity but it's not really allowing me to be able to power the ball down in the zone," Haren said. "I don't know. We need to get something figured out. We need to change course here because it's been bugging me for awhile."

I’m wondering if this Haren injury puts the Angels into the mix for Garza, Greinke or maybe even Hamels. The Angels farm system isn’t as plush as it was a couple of years ago, as a lot of their better younger players are now in Anaheim, so I don’t know what it would take in terms of stringing together a package, but they should definitely feel that they have some workable pieces on the roster to make a run at the pennant this season. The offense has come around with Trout and Trumbo taking some pressure off of Pujols, but what was thought to be a big strength earlier in the season --- the starting pitching --- is now suddenly a liability. Essentially, it’s a Weaver-and-Wilson-and-pray-for-rain situation right now, with Santana still with his head up his ass, and Haren not really pitching all the effectively even when he was healthy. They were getting by for a while with Jerome Williams in the No. 5-hole, which was fine, but the middle of the rotation hasn’t been where it needs to be to make this team a threat to not only get to the playoffs, but to win a series or two.
Also, keep in mind that it is widely thought that the Rangers WILL make every attempt to get one of those guys listed above, as we do know that they have the resources in terms of premium prospects in their farm system. They supposedly have had some scouts out reading Hamels, and could be one of the teams that could knock Amaro’s socks off. A lot of guys also seeing Greinke being a fit in Texas, because some still aren’t sure if Greinke can pitch in a New York or a Los Angeles or a Boston or somewhere like that. DFW has become a nice baseball market of late, but it’s still lower-profile in terms of media and pressure, as we all know what team in that market gets all the headlines.
But needless to say, I’m guessing the Angels might want to kick the tires on at least one of these guys for two reasons: A) their own need for some more pitching depth, especially if there are concerns over Haren’s return or Santana’s lack of performance, and B) to try to keep the Rangers out of the mix or force them to overpay for someone. If I’m Ruben Amaro Jr., and IF I’m taking calls on Hamels, these are the two teams I might look at first, because they might be the most willing to deal something of quality.
