Stadium looking like a reality for UNLV
Always subject to financing...but could complete in 5 years
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2012/jul/08/stadium-looking- reality/
it appears very likely that the Rebels will have a new home in the not-too-distant future, perhaps by the time today’s high school seniors graduate from college.
The project is a partnership between the university and Majestic Realty Co., which built the Staples Center in Los Angeles, among other projects. This is one of many sports-related construction proposals being discussed in the Las Vegas Valley, but this one has a different feel. This one seems imminent.
And it’s big. The Sun has reported the project could cost as much as $2 billion

I don't know about anyone else who lives in the Las Vegas area, but with these stadium and arena proposals all over the board, I'm past the point of "until I see a shovel in the ground." I'm not going to believe any of this is true until I'm at a game, listening to the National Anthem, with the players on the sidelines in the new venue, be it an NBA or NHL team, UNLV football hosting Utah State or hell, even the 51s hosting Albuquerque in a new Triple-A park (which they DEFINTELY need). I don't know what will come first, nor do I care. I just want something. I'm tired of all these grandiose drawings and blueprints, etc. I'm sick of the lag time that it's taking to complete studies, pass ordinances, etc. I've been here for over 12 years now and I've read or heard just about everything. Again, until I am at a game, with the Anthem playing and with two teams on the floor or field, I will not believe any of it. And it flat out sucks to have the attitude, but I'm sure just about everyone else who lives here feels the same way.
Now that I have that off my chest, I, like many others, have tried desperately to get behind UNLV football and support the program. I desperately hope that this is the year the program can start showing some more competitiveness and that the weeds left behind from the Sanford Era have been pulled. I like Bobby Hauck and think he can still make a positive impact on the program, but with this being his third year and with a good chunk of his own recruits and his system in place, there has to be some progress this season. Especially when you look at other programs across the country that have had similar downfalls and have turned things around and/or even played in bowl games in quick fashion. Teams like Utah State, Louisiana Tech, Wyoming, etc. that have at least shown the ability to play respectable football.
I guess it's a matter of the Egg or the Chicken. And what comes first: getting the stadium, which would essentially build fan support (for the initial stage), or do you have to win before the stadium is justified? Like I said, having lived in other areas where college football is part of the culture, I want to have at least a semblance of the same feeling here in Las Vegas. I know it'll never be Baton Rouge or Lincoln or Columbus, but it doesn't have to be. We just need to have at least a sliver of community support here, which we don't even have now. As much as I like Runnin' Reb basketball and all of that, I still want the football team to be a part of the mix here. HOPEFULLY, this plan finally has some legs and will start getting into action, but having heard different plans and ideas for over a decade now, I can't help but be skeptical.

This city does so much to encourage people from all over the world to come and have an amazing experience. When it comes to locals authority's seem to drag their feet at best.
For twenty years I've seen proposals, posturing and more proposals. I remember in 1992, or so, a Texas businessman was supposed to build a 100,000 seat dome. I, like you, am tired of it all. When a shovel starts flinging dirt I will be there with season ticket money.
I have a passion for Las Vegas and all it has accomplished over 100+ years but this has always left me embarrassed. For a town that prides itself on being able to accomplish the impossible we sure have a hard time solving this arena/stadium debacle.
We are the largest market to not have a professional sports franchise. These leagues hiding behind the gambling issue has always been such a joke to me when they all know that the real problem gambling problem is right outside their doorstep and has nothing to do with what goes here. I for one have always thought that David Stern has never been scared of putting a franchise here, I believe he has always been scared of getting close to Vegas and having us expose his league's illegal gambling problem. If I'm not mistaken the NBA has employees in Vegas to monitor any wagering activity that would warrant a second look. These league's, college and pro, should feel fortunate that we exist. That way we can properly monitor their billion dollar operations. A task they seem to fall short on.
Professional sports brings communities together, which is exactly what we need. The only togetherness happens in our respective cul de sac's at best. This would give us a common thread which we desperately need. I love UNLV but with a community of over two million we deserve a franchise so we can totally fulfill the 'world class city' moniker. We are a big boy city, time to act like it.
I hope you all have a great day playing the WNBA and the All-Star game. Dreadful three days.

an off campus stadium, isn't the answer that others make it appear to be.
there is a definite lack of community support for UNLV, maybe it because of a lack of winners, maybe it's other things
but you first need annual/continual student support and if the stadium is too far away (off-campus) and unaffordable for the college student, parking etc, then your fan base will not be as energetic as it could/should be.
The only off campus stadiums that are successful are those that already have huge community support. Here in vegas, where support is lacking, it needs to be regrown and you need to start with the students, alumni and that means an on-campus stadium.
You want a large fan base at home games or else you won't have that consistent home field advantage other entities enjoy and continue to have with an energetic/vocal student/alumni.
In time the stadium could be become self-sufficient hosting multiple events monthly and yes it may even take away a share of the casino convention action. (this may be a reason [casinos] that an on campus stadium has taken an inordinate amount of time to build)
As we all have seen the influence of the casinos on multiple issues here in the valley.
Whoever builds an on campus stadium in partnership with UNLV must have deep pockets for the resistance that will be seen from the casinos, if they (casinos) think you're about to take away $$$$ from them, you'll see the fight, as the bigger the $, the bigger the fight.
At the college level, we all know he who wins the recruiting game will have an easier hand at winning their game. And it's easier to recruit when you win, (its easier to do a lot of things when you win).
So first you need to build a winner, a winning team and you need the type of coaches who can do the X's & O's and you need them to stay as long as you can get them to stay. It would be easier to portray this city as an upcoming town for young talented coaches that can build their resume with winning teams and maybe we'll get lucky and they'll stay, but I suspect for now, bigger $ will win out most of the time.
Building the stadium on campus would also be a better recruitment tool (for athletes & students) than an off campus stadium.
Now if we could join the PAC-10, that would really help and a new on-campus stadium would make UNLV that much more attractive vs an off campus stadium.
Yeah I'm in the see it, then believe it camp and it all comes down to winning, build a winner and 'they' will come. Simplistic but true, execution has been the problem, most of the 'choosers' of the 'builders' have odd colored glasses, they may be good at what they do, but have a difficult time choosing a winner and will repeat their mistakes again and again. I'd like to see UNLV football team win, but if the recruits aren't up to snuff and execution of X's & O's are lacking, I doubt if we'll see any significant change in the W/Ls column.
just another opinion.....
