Game Time: 7:00 PT
Location: Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada
Injuries : NAZ RB Zach Baumann-Probable
NAZ QB Cary Grossart-Probable
Weather: Fair, Winds East 6-11mph, Heat Index 94
Looks like it will be easy and that's exactly what it should be as the Lumberjacks return to Sam Boyd Stadium Saturday night. Northern Arizona and UNLV will play each other for the 1st time in two decades.
The Rebels may be more NAU's speed after they were dismissed last week against Arizona State 63-6 but it's not likely.
This week I expect a dominating performance from the Rebels but in order to achieve the anticipated, lopsided outcome, they must be able to rely on better play from their young secondary who, in large part was responsible for allowing 478 yards last week to Minnesota.
The Lumberjacks, who are 2-5 all-time against the Rebels (0-4 at Sam Boyd), will attempt to exploit Freshman DB Peni Vea who finished with 9 tackles, 4 solo last week, far to many tackles for a DB. Vea appeared to not anticipate cutbacks well leaving him with failed arm tackle attempts.
One of the problems that UNLV will continue to have this season is their inability to rely on their corners which hinders them from stopping the run or applying QB pressure.
Vea and Sophomore SS Tajh Hasson look like they react to plays rather than anticipating plays. When they are better at anticipating that is when they will be able to be more physical. Right now the secondary is soft which makes it even more important that Rebel RB Tim Cornett has a big season. Keep the defense off the field. Busted coverages, over pursuing, and arm tackles will pave the way for 500 yards allowed on the weekly basis for the gang on Maryland Parkway.
Interesting to note that Rebel Head Coach Bobby Hauck was an assistant at NAU during the 1993-94 season along with 3 rd year Rebel offensive coordinator Brent Myers who coached at NAU from 92-97.
Also worth noting, it appears as if Senior punter, Chase Lansford, will also be a defensive weapon. Chase averaged almost 50 yards a punt in last weeks triple overtime loss. His presence should allow UNLV to win most field position battles. I would be shocked to see him very much this week.
The Rebels should easily break a six game losing streak and improve their record against the Big Sky to 30-10-1 overall. If not the anticipation for basketball will ramp up a few more notches.

Just a side note, I expect UNLV to win by at least 30. Anything less would be disappointing.

If I’m Hauck, I keep it pretty simple in this game and build off of the things the Rebels did well in the opener. Offensively, the strength was the outside running game and getting Cornett into space. Defensively, the Rebels need to continue working on playing assignment football. I’d also put the emphasis on playing with a little better discipline, as there were still some key penalties in the opener. There are still plenty of holes with this UNLV team, but I also think there as some core competencies that they can build a foundation from.
I know the temptation might be there to open up the playbook and try some new wrinkles against a team that gave up 60-plus last week, especially when Sherry does need to work on his techniques in the pocket, if the first game was any indication. But you also don’t want to get too cute and start committing turnovers, which is what happened in that s---tstorm of a game last year against Southern Utah. I think Sherry does need to be helped with a play-action game, so maybe you see some of that here, but I wouldn’t turn him into Matthew Stafford just yet. I still think a manage-the-game mentality should be the focal point, and maybe the Rebels can roll the dice on some 2nd-and-short situations. If I’m Hauck, I’d really like to find ways to get the offense into situations like that.
The Rebels do have a short week before playing Washington State next Friday, so maybe that factors into the equation somewhat. That will be an ESPN game, to my knowledge. You can’t assume anything (just ask the folks from Cedar City, Utah), but I think if the Rebels can minimize the risk-taking and stick to what looks to be their early strengths, they should be able to win this game by a pretty decent amount. I don’t think the letdown/look-ahead situation will apply, as I’m sure that Hauck and his staff are emphasizing a culture change in the early going, and a win --- no matter who its against --- would still in their best interest.
As a sidenote, the NAU coach, Souers, and Hauck do have some connections, as both coached at Montana. Souers was a former d-coordinator in the 90s and coached Tim Hauck, Bobby's brother. Bobby, of course, was the head coach at Montana before coming to UNLV. I believe both were on the Montana staff at the same time at some point, so I would imagine there is a friendship there.

I agree especially with your defensive comments.

Mike Sanford's last four years on the job? 14 wins. 6 came by double digits.
Not a bad team to lay chalk with when the situation and matchups are right...

I knew when that line came out the Rebels were in trouble but I never expected a loss. Just sick about it. Absolutely no commitment to football. No question the rebuilding has to start with a stadium.
