L.A. Dodgers @ Chicago
The extreme control issues for Cubs RH starter Tyler Chattwood continue to march on as he’s now issued 58 walks in 63 1/3 innings pitched (19.9% of all batters faced). That problem has directly led to his miserable 1.75 WHIP and force him out of game in 5 1/3 IP or less in 10 of his 13 starts. He figures to be tested in this area again tonight by a Dodgers lineup that ranks #6 in the Major League’s in walks (260). They remain sixth (243) even when you subtract the intentional walks out of the equation. Their patience and plate discipline will be a necessary asset tonight against Chattwood.
The visiting mound opponent tonight RH Kenta Maeda has had solid career success (albeit a small sample size) versus current Cubs hitters. In 39 plate appearances with Maeda on the hill, eight Chicago starters have only five hits in 39 plate appearances which has translated into a .147 BA, .256 OBP, .324 SLG & .580 OPS.
11 of Chattwood’s game WHIP’s have been 1.40 or higher this season so expecting him to keep LA off the bases here seems to be a bit far-fetched. What has saved him from total disaster this season is the fact that he’s allowed only 3 HR’s and against the National League’s long ball leaders that is key. Bullpens certainly favor Los Angeles significantly in this spot both statistically and depth wise which should help them here. Possibility of thunderstorms could affect the game in the back half but nonetheless have no problem supporting the Dodgers at this near pick-em price.
Recommendation: L.A. Dodgers
