Any opinions on the offseason so far??? I thought the rowand for thome deal was a great deal for the phillies.....Not necessarily a bad deal for the sox, they could use a good power lefty in the line up. Would have to think the big hurt is done...at least with the sox if not for anyone...
Giles resigning with the padres was a good move for the team. Pretty fun how he shunned the dodgers who are in disaray. The mets signing delgado and wagner I actually like for them. Looper is more suited for the 8th instead of the 9th and delgado is a godsend this team desperately needed.
Loaiza to oakland makes me scratch my head a little but not nearly as much as toronto signing ryan for an absurd contract??? What the hell was that stunt??? I use to have high hopes for jp, but unless they win this year he should be shitcanned...
Kinda hoping my brewers sign Nomar to play third for a year With a decent 3b and another decent starter and mid reliever I like them to contend for the playoffs next year...What do you think???

I blogged about some of this last week. I read a couple of reports the two pitching prospects the Phils got in the Thome deal are real solid. Signed Flash Gordon. Ack. Manny for Abreu??
I expect the Dodgers to make a splash this week, that is if anyone wants to go there.
I don't get the Loaiza signing, especially considering he pitched for the Nationals last year.
The Brewers need a pitcher or catcher for Overbay. I would be shocked if Nomar went to Milwaukee.

ER Beane has been right on most of his personnel decisions. Loaizia is an experienced winning pitcher that can mix in the rotation with the young studs they have. That is going to be the best starting rotation in the AL next year, maybe in baseball unless the Cards or Red Sox get Burnett

Yea, I hear you D. That's why I don't bash the move and give him the benefit of the doubt. Sounded like AJ to Cards.

Would have to say the Mets are the offseason winners this year, no? Their starters were solid last year and the bullpen fell apart often.
Not sure about the money but jp beat everyone to the punch. he went straight for everyones fall back closer if they failed to get wagner. that team still needs more help though.
Is there a team and a deal to be made for Manny? if i were philly, i think i would have made that deal... how do the sox fix there bullpen woes?

You can't buy a world series with free agents unless you have the starting pitching to go with it. Glavine, Martinez, Traschel, Benson and Seo?? Not even close. Pedro was phenomenal last year and still won only 14 games. Mets will be better but if Wagner gets arm problems again how bad does that $50 million look? Who's going to pitch the 7th and 8th? Their bullpen still sucks as a whole even with Wagner. If Boston or St. Louis get Burnett, they are the front runners. Frontline starting pitching wins every year, bullpen is the next key. Angels won with their pen in 2002.

Benson is just about off to Baltimore for Jorge Julio as the Mets
try to build that middle relief which ultimately must get the ball into Wagner's hand.

Marlins trade Castillo to Twins for two pitchers
ESPN.com news services
I really like this trade for the Twins who have alot of pitching
and have now added a speed and good on base % guy who plays solid defense and who's game is seemingly perfect for the Metrodome's artificial surface. His stolen bases slipped to 21 last year mostly due to a quad injury and brief left knee problem. As long as his knee stands up this is a real nice fit.
The Florida Marlins have traded Luis Castillo to the Minnesota Twins for pitchers Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler, ESPN's Peter Gammons reported Friday.
The 24-year-old Bowyer, who appeared in eight games in September for Minnesota, could become Florida's closer. Castillo hit .301 with with 10 stolen bases, 30 RBI and four home runs in 122 with the 2005 Marlins.
He follows Carlos Delgado and Josh Beckett, who have been shipped out in the Marlins' fire sale.
The team has received permission from Major League Baseball to begin looking for another home because it has been unable to reach a deal for a new stadium in South Florida.
Travis Bowyer - Age 24, Date of Birth: 8/31/1981
Bowyer finished 2004 a combined 9-3 with a 97/55 K/BB ratio in 91 innings pitched between Single-A and Double-A. He'll likely return to Double-A to start 2005. He's seen as a second tier pitching prospect in the Twins system but another strong year could make him a factor in the majors in 2006.

Tidbit on Bowyer...
He can bring it as far as velocity (98mph) or so.. I saw him pitch for the Twins last year and he was blowing people out of the batters box.

You don't think manny for abrue is a fair deal ER????? Hmmm, I don't think it can get any fairer...Ewww, if manny goes to philly I will be on a mission to get him for fantasy this year lol Loaiza for 7mil per year makes no sense to me considering they dumped the vet sps last year.
I guess Pierre is more than likely headed to the yanks.....

METS NEAR DEAL FOR MARLINS' LO DUCA
By MARK HALE
December 4, 2005 -- The Mets are believed to be close to a deal in which they would send a minor-league prospect to the Marlins for catcher Paul Lo Duca, according to a major-league source.
The identity of the Met prospect was not immediately known — but it's hard to envision it being Lastings Milledge, the jewel of their minor-league system.
Getting Lo Duca would give the Mets a starting catcher and continue their extremely aggressive offseason so far. They have already added star free-agent closer Billy Wagner and slugging first baseman Carlos Delgado, the latter coming in a trade with the fire sale Marlins two weeks ago.
Lo Duca batted .283 with six homers and 57 RBIs this past season and threw out 21 percent of runners trying to steal. The backstop, 34 in April, is owed $12.5M over the next two years.

Well Z what do you think the Brewers even making moves in this crazy market. It obviously made sense to let go of Overbay, David Bush clashed with the Jay organization last season, but his arm is live. While Zach Jackson a nice 22-year old lefty with talent. The good thing is they didn't take Shea Hillenbrand in return, which was the rumor. And Danny Kolb back after he takes a pay cut. Interesting as he said how much he missed working with Mike Maddux...

I am one of the few guys around wiskysconsin who really likes the overbay trade. I have been listening to sports radio all day while at work and 90% around here seem to not like the deal. Granted, I was kinda hoping to get Dustin McGown in the deal but oh well. I think bush has some decent upside. I am big k/bb split guy and he is nearly 3-1 k/bb so I like that.
Coming to the NL and working with THE GENUIS, MIKE MADDUX, should bring out his potential..hopefully. Gross is a decent 4th/5th outfielder/ph and don't mind him. Actually the talk I heard was hinske not hildy, around here..I rather have neither personally...
Jackson I do not know to much about. I know he is a decent prospect who was drafted early in round 2 by the jays. A 22yr old high draft pick lefty with some upside is always appealing to me.
I am not to gung ho about kolb coming back, but if he takes a pay cut and his guru can get him back on track, I am game for that...Wes Obermuller was junk, glad he is gone...
I would like to sign Bengie Molina and trade Miller, or cut him..he is blah...Jeff Weaver is the only sp that really stands out for me that I like..Washburn, maybe but they will want to much moola....Still hoping for a nomar signing...I am sure it won't happen.... If not no biggie, I don't have a problem at all with Bill Hall being the every day third baseman...

Brewers tried for clement...
Before making the deal, the Brewers covered all their bases. They made one last run at Boston right-hander Matt Clement in a proposed one-for-one trade but the Red Sox refused to pick up any of the $19.3 million left on the two years of Clement's contract.
"They made it very easy for us by saying we'd have to take the rest of that (financial) commitment," Ash said. "While it would have been a credible move, it would have been our only move."
In other words, there would have been no more wiggle room in the Brewers' budget had they traded for Clement and paid any substantial portion of his contract. Now, with money left to spend, the Brewers can continue to pursue help for their bullpen.
"We're still going to try to do some things," said general manager Doug Melvin, who continued to talk to clubs Thursday.
"We're a club that's always going to have flexibility. We're always going to have transitional players."
The Brewers think the three players acquired for Overbay will provide returns next season and for years to come. Here is an in-depth look at each player:
RHP Dave Bush: 26 years old. Selected in the second round of 2002 draft out of Wake Forest University. 2005 statistics: 5-11, 4.49 earned run average in 24 starts with Toronto; 2-2, 4.42 ERA in nine starts with Class AAA Syracuse.
Bush throws a fastball in the 89- to 92-mph range, slider and changeup. He is considered a swing man, meaning he could be the fifth starter or a middle reliever in the bullpen next season. Bush was a closer in college and the Brewers think he could eventually settle into a setup role in the bullpen.
"He's a bulldog," Melvin said. "He goes at you with three different pitches. He's aggressive and has versatility. (Brewers pitching coach) Mike Maddux will like him."
LHP Zach Jackson: 22 years old. Selected as a sandwich pick between first and second rounds (32nd overall) in 2004 draft out of Texas A&M. 2005 statistics: 8-1, 2.88 ERA in 10 starts with Class A Dunedin; 4-3, 4.00 ERA in nine starts with Class AA New Hampshire; 4-4, 5.13 ERA in eight starts at Syracuse.
At 6 feet 5 inches and 220 pounds, Jackson is big and strong. He throws his fastball in the 90- to 93-mph range, has an effective "cutter" and a dependable changeup. Jackson moved quickly through Toronto's farm system last season and the Brewers expect him to start the 2006 season in the starting rotation at Class AAA Nashville.
"We project him as a No. 2 or No. 3 guy (in a major-league rotation)," Ash said. "He has a bit of an unusual delivery, with a little hesitation. He pitches in on left-handers. What I like about both these guys (Bush and Jackson) is they're very competitive."
OF Gabe Gross: 26 years old. Selected in the first round (15th overall) of 2001 draft out of Auburn. 2005 statistics: .297, 6 HRs, 46 RBI in 102 games at Syracuse; .250, 1 HR, 7 RBI in 40 games with Toronto.
A quarterback in college, Gross is a good athlete who can play all three outfield positions. A left-handed hitter, he gained the attention of scouts by hitting eight homers during the exhibition season in 2005. The Brewers must decide whether to keep him on their bench as a fourth outfielder to begin the 2006 season or send him to Nashville to play every day and be ready when needed.
"We were looking for a left-handed outfielder who could come off the bench," Melvin said. "The only two left-handed hitters we have in the lineup now are Geoff Jenkins and Prince Fielder. This gives us more depth and versatility."
Because of injuries to Mike Jones and Manny Parra and the slippage of Ben Hendrickson, the Brewers found themselves short of talented pitching prospects to go with their rising group of highly rated regular players. Now, with Bush and Jackson added to the fold, they think the balance is better at the top of their heralded farm system.
"We had a lot of young position players at the top levels but not a lot of pitchers to blend in," said Ash, who noted that none of the three players acquired is out of minor-league options.
"We wanted to get some good young pitchers to add to that wave for the next three or four years. In the end, this was the best deal for us."
The Brewers completed the deal by sending minor-league right-hander Ty Taubenheim to the Blue Jays. Taubenheim, 23, a 19th round draft pick in 2003, was 10-2 with a 2.63 ERA at Class A Brevard County last season and 2-6 with a 4.36 ERA at Class AA Huntsville.

3 stiffs for Overbay is pathetic, Gross is awful, Bush is awful, maybe they get something out of the lefty that's 22 but boy what a steal for Toronto.

The Brewers got a another "stiff" from the Jays a couple a years ago in Doug Davis. Davis the last two years put up a 3.39 and 3.84 ERA, about the same as Josh Beckett, although Davis threw about 80 more innings. Trading Overbay at his peak was the right thing to do, unfortunately the market is not great for 29-year-old first baseman with 39 CAREER HOME RUNS.

Davis was a waiver wire pickup wasn't he ER? I'm pretty sure he was off waivers. Brew Crew are a good young team that needs their vets is all i'm saying, they didn't need to get younger. I don't care that overbay is 29 and has 39 homers, he's a veteran 3hole hitter on that team wasn't he? To get 3 guys who won't do much at all next year in my opinion is the wrong trade and to me why their franchise is freakin ecstatic if they go 81-81.

Couldn't disagree with you anymore derron. 3 of the brewers tops sp prospects have been hit by injuries and another(hendrickson) is going south so the depth there is fine. Bush had a 3-1 k/bb ratio on a bad team in the AL...you don't think he will do better??? I do...Gross was a throw in and he is better than hildy or hinske because he is cheap...good enough for a 5th OF or ph...Dunno what you think they should of got, apparently this was the best offer out there.....
You are right on about brewer fans being happy to be at least .500 though, But can you blame them after enduring the Selig family regime???

Toronto a bad team? They finished almost .500 at 80-82 and had to play 38 games vs boston and New york.
Tell me two better pitching signs than BJ Ryan and Burnett. Plus they get back a healthy Cy Young Award annual candidate in Halladay to go with Burnett is as good as a 1-2 punch out there.
GM Ricciardi is doing a great job in a town where the most noise heard at the park is in the 7th inning when the milk, cheese, and yogurt guys race each other around the park. They won 80 games with Halladay missing 1/2 the season. They are a playoff contender now and adding Overbay makes sense to contend this year.
